This might seem like a shallow statement but when you look at an average student from a top-tier college and an average student from a lower-tier college the difference that you witness would not surprise you if you just look at their CVs.
It’s not as if they have done something exceptionally great but the CVs of students who get selected in top management schools like top IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJMR, and JBIMS are highly analytical. They know how to quantify their achievements and in the end, that’s all that matters. It’s all just numbers and data.
Typically, the students have impressive academic records and have been part of numerous non-academic avenues that have helped them in understanding the importance of extra-curriculum activities.
Some might have told you that most of the students who go to these top colleges have work experience but that is not true. You do not require work experience to get into your dream college. If you’re looking to get into one of these top management colleges and do not have an exceptional profile, just start focusing on your speed and accuracy for the written examination and polish your CV. Highlight the things that have impacted you and that you think would help you in becoming a better manager in the future.
SPJIMR usually expects an all-rounder profile from its candidates. A profile is said to be good if
All three or at least 2 of these shall guarantee or increase your chances of admission considerably for a profile-based call from SPJIMR. An additional ground to score well is the application form wherein you are required to fill in about yourself. If your matter appeals to the selection committee you can surely wait for a call. The admission process further comprises two group interviews, essays, and psychometric tests.
We can safely conclude that SPJIMR focuses on an overall good profile and not just high scores.
If you are preparing for an interview at SPJIMR, here is what you can expect based on a student's experience.
First, you need to choose your specialization beforehand while filling out the application form. Once you receive a profile-based call, you will be shortlisted and interviewed on the basis of your chosen specialization.
On the day of the interview, make sure to reach the venue 90 minutes prior to the scheduled interview time. The admissions committee member will verify all the documents which were uploaded to the portal and will ask you to submit a photocopy of the same.
You will then be taken to another classroom for the psychometric test and WAT. The psychometric test will revolve around questions testing your morals and ethics, and you will have to choose among Strongly agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. You will also have to elaborate on the same by choosing any 3 among the 10 questions from each group. The WAT will ask you to write on a given topic within a time limit of 30 minutes.
After the written test, you will be taken for the group interview. Groups of 6 will be taken to their respective panels. You will be asked to introduce yourself, and the panelists will question you based on your specialization. Be prepared to answer questions related to your work profile and operations. You will also be asked to speak on a topic related to your specialization.
If you qualify for Group Interview 2, you will be asked questions that test your personality and character. You will also be asked to talk about a "Wow" moment in your life and something deep you have learned from your parents.
Remember, the interview process is an elimination round, so make sure to prepare well and be confident in your answers.
Let me make this clear, there is no fixed specialization that will help you make it into counseling.
For working professionals: Companies that visit the campus for placements usually prefer Finance and Operations background. People with a technological background opt for tech consulting while many go for Sales and Operations consulting as well. The companies are not interested in specialization, rather they look for how good your CV is. So, we can say a guy from a pure manufacturing background who is currently studying marketing can also make it into consulting.
For freshers: The best specialization to choose to make it into a big consulting firm for a fresher is Finance. The concepts included in the Finance specialization are more connected with consulting. So if your area of interest covers both, Finance and Consulting, then opt for Finance while the target for consulting. As far as Operations is concerned, it’s not easy to get admission. Even if you do the chances are lower unless you do internships and projects.
Lastly, remember there is no direct relation between the choice of specialization and placements. Even if you fail to get into your desired company, know that it is not the end. You can slowly achieve your goal provided you are certain of it and are working hard towards achieving it.
By ‘teaches Management like Engineering’ I assume what you mean is Management studies at IIM Lucknow are more strict, mundane, and repetitive. In this regard, I refuse to accept your claim as the reality is far from this.
People graduating from these institutes are youngsters with an age group of 20-25 so there is very little impact of the institutes' pedagogy on the learner’s ability to learn. These candidates are likely to be more serious regarding their growth and even sacrifice the fun of a typical B School life just to reach new heights. Anyone with such a mindset is likely to fare well anywhere irrespective of the choice of Institute.
I am going to specifically pinpoint the scenario at FMS because there is a general conception that FMS has a relatively chilled ambiance. The truth is I have seen many students working tremendously hard in their 2 years. They explore much more than academics and take part in many extracurricular activities because they know it’s their last opportunity before they enter the corporate world. The attendance rules although stricter than that at IIM Lucknow are no direct indication of the general discipline and the rigor of the curriculum. Every institute has its own tailored learning environment and it’s up to the students to make the most out of it.
People just ‘flock’ to a particular B School because of the sheep mentality. Rather their decisions are based on continuous analysis of various factors like tags, peer group, intended specialization, placement opportunities, personal goals.
MBA admission in Indian B Schools is a fairly weird process in comparison to that of foreign B Schools. In India, the admission process requires a candidate to have some work experience and in certain B-schools, it even carries a certain weightage. But during Final Placements, this scenario changes entirely as the recruiters prefer freshers over experienced candidates. The major reasons for this contrast are:
Recruiters are looking for candidates with work experience of not more than 11-12 months. Honestly, this strategy is illogical as a person with more work experience is bound to excel much better than a fresher, and restricting him from getting a job just because they cannot be exploited to the fullest extent is a bit cruel.
The scenario is pretty much the opposite in foreign countries that prefer MBA candidates with work experience only. This is because in India MBA is considered a way to become more employable or earn a fatter cheque. Whereas in the West, it is a means to upgrade your career and take it to new heights. The entire concept of MBA is at fault in India thereby this illogical strategy.
In my opinion, MBA candidates should have a work experience of at least 1 year, only then they can harness the MBA program to the fullest and not approach it just as a source of placements.
My friend has got both a profile-based and a score-based call. He had to choose between IIM Indore and SPJIMR so he eventually went for the SPJIMR. IIM Indore alumni told him about the issues the students face during placements owing to the huge batch size. The recruiters offer the best packages to the top students and the rest of the batch ends up with average packages. This made him choose SPJIMR.
As he went for the interview, he soon realized that the other candidates had scores much better than his (97+). This disheartened him with the lowest score (96 something). He knew clearly he had zero chances and left right after the first round. He further said that the campus wasn’t that appealing and IIM Indore and FMS seemed to have better infrastructure. So the bottom line is the chances of getting a score-based call from SPJIMR are very low.
SPJIMR, a leading MBA college, offers specializations in Marketing, Finance, Operations, and Information Management. As part of the application process, you'll need to select two specializations that align with your relevant work experience.
To gain admission to SPJIMR, Mumbai, there are two selection methods available. The first is profile-based calls, where your profile is reviewed, and you may receive a call based on your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, work experience, and other relevant factors. To qualify for a call, you'll need to have a minimum overall percentile of 85 and a sectional percentile of 70. Alternatively, you can qualify for a call based on your GMAT score, provided it is 680+.
The second selection method is the autonomous process. This involves accepting CAT/XAT and GMAT scores, after which students are invited for GDPI WAT before final selection.
My answer will be strictly pertaining to SP Jain as my sister is a student there and I have quite a lot of information about the admission criteria there. SP Jain has unique criteria wherein almost 70% of the parameters are uncontrollable. Some of them include
These are some factors that are hardly in one’s control. So one should not be disappointed if she/he lacks in these aspects. Well, it is now that the factors that are controllable come into the picture. You can work on these factors and compensate for the flaws in your profile
If the stars align, you will surely get a call. From what I have heard, every PGDM batch has students with both exception profiles as well as normal profiles. So what you need to focus on is finding a unique trait of yourself and working on it relentlessly.
No, there are no backdoor entries as far as I know. All of the names mentioned are respectable institutes and the only way to get admissions is through your own hard work and determination. Study well, take the entrance exam and hope for the best.
