ANU Application Deadlines & Intakes for Indian Students

ANU operates two intakes per year for international applicants: Semester 1 starting in late February and Semester 2 starting in late July. The Crawford School of Public Policy runs a separate, earlier calendar. The university accepts up to three program preferences per application, ranked in order of preference, and issues one offer for the highest eligible preference.

When Are the Application Deadlines for ANU?

The Semester 2, 2026 deadline is just days away. The major intake for Indian applicants is Semester 1, 2027, opening the full program catalog.

Intake Application Deadline Crawford School Deadline Status
Semester 2, 2026 15 May 2026 15 April 2026 (Closed) Live (3 days)
Semester 1, 2027 15 December 2026 31 October 2026 Live
Semester 2, 2027 15 May 2027 15 April 2027 Live

The acceptance deadline for any Semester 1 offer is 15 January for applicants overseas and 31 January for those already in Australia. The Semester 2 acceptance deadline is 30 June (overseas) and 10 July (in Australia). Programs with additional selection criteria (some Bachelor of Health Science majors, honors pathways, and the Crawford master's) may close earlier.

  • The IELTS result is required at application; Class 12 mark sheets must be uploaded if applying for UG.
  • Applications submitted close to the deadline take longer to assess; typical processing is 1 to 3 weeks for complete applications.
  • ANU guarantees on-campus accommodation to international undergraduate students starting their first year in Semester 1.

Tip: For Indian applicants targeting Semester 1, 2027, apply between July and October 2026 to lock the seat early, complete MEA apostille on transcripts, and start the Subclass 500 visa within the 33-day Indian processing window before classes begin in late February 2027. Visit Australian University application deadlines for more information.

ANU Admissions Intakes & Application Process

ANU offers two pathways: direct application through the ANU online portal (Studylink) for most international applicants or via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for those completing Australian Year 12, the International Baccalaureate, or NCEA. Indian applicants typically use the direct portal. The university also recognizes authorized education agents in India.

What Are the Main Intakes at ANU?

ANU admits in two academic semesters: Semester 1 starts in late February, while Semester 2 begins in late July. Each semester runs 12 to 16 weeks of teaching. Most programs accept Indian applicants in both intakes; some programs are Semester 1 only.

What is the Step-by-Step Application Process at ANU?

For undergraduate programs

  1. Browse the ANU Programs and Courses catalog and shortlist up to three program preferences.
  2. Register on the ANU online application portal (Studylink) and start a new application.
  3. Upload Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets with grading scale; provisional results accepted for Semester 2 applications.
  4. Submit IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE score meeting the program-specific minimum.
  5. Provide passport scan (first and last pages).
  6. Pay the AUD 150 application fee at submission.
  7. Receive a decision within 1 to 3 weeks for complete applications; conditional offers are issued where documents are incomplete.
  8. Accept the offer by paying the deposit before the acceptance deadline.
  9. Receive the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to start the Subclass 500 visa.

For postgraduate programs

  1. Identify the postgraduate program; check program-specific eligibility and prerequisites.
  2. Register on ANU Studylink and start an application listing up to 3 program preferences.
  3. Upload bachelor's degree transcripts with grading scale; final certificate required for unconditional offer.
  4. Submit a CV and contact details of one referee (for some programs).
  5. Provide a learning outcome statement for programs that require one.
  6. Submit IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE score.
  7. Pay the AUD 150 application fee.
  8. Receive decision within 1 to 3 weeks; some Crawford School programs take longer.

How Long Does ANU Take to Release Admission Decisions?

Most ANU applications are assessed within 1 to 3 weeks of complete submission. Programs with additional selection criteria (such as Crawford School masters or research-based PhD pathways) may take 4 to 6 weeks. Indian applicants can expect a final decision well within the visa timeline.

Application Type Decision Released
Direct UG Application 1 to 3 weeks for complete applications
Direct PG Coursework 1 to 3 weeks; Crawford School up to 6 weeks
Higher Degree by Research (PhD) Programme and supervisor-dependent, typically 6 to 12 weeks

Note: ANU permits up to three programme preferences per application. Use this strategically: avoid listing three programmes with identical entry requirements. Layer preferences as a stretch programme, a target programme, and a safety programme to maximise the chance of an offer.

Australian National University Acceptance Rate

ANU does not publish an official acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place it at ~35% across all programs, making ANU one of the more selective Australian Go8 universities behind only Melbourne and Sydney. The selectivity is driven by quota management across the small ~20,700-student cohort, not by application volume alone.

How Competitive is ANU Admissions for Indian Students?

ANU enrols 6,496 international students from 100+ countries, making it Australia's most international university per the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. India sits in the top 10 source countries. The 5-star student-teacher ratio and 5-star staff qualifications rating from the Good Universities Guide 2026 reflect the small-cohort selectivity model.

Indian admit profiles cluster around the following:

  • 85%+ in Class 12 (CBSE/ICSE/State Board) for competitive bachelor's programs.
  • CGPA 7.5 to 8.5 from recognized Indian universities for postgraduate coursework programs.
  • IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0; equivalent to TOEFL iBT 80 or PTE 64.
  • Demonstrated international or cross-cultural exposure, particularly for Crawford School and ANU College of Asia and the Pacific programs.
  • For honors and research-track programs, a defined research interest aligned with ANU faculty.

Key Insight: ANU's acceptance pattern favours Indian applicants who fit specific Asia-Pacific and public-policy research clusters. Indian applicants from non-engineering and non-IT backgrounds (international relations, economics, political science, public administration, journalism) face a less crowded sub-pool than the standard CS/Engineering applicant track and benefit from ANU's research-intensive culture.

ANU Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students

ANU applies a holistic eligibility framework with course-specific minimum scores. The university publishes minimum indicative scores for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with most competitive programs requiring 85%+ in Class 12 or a strong bachelor's record. The university does not require GMAT or GRE for most master's coursework.

What Are the Academic Eligibility Criteria at ANU?

For undergraduate admission, Indian applicants need 85% or above in Class 12 (CBSE, ICSE, or recognised State Board), with some highly competitive programs setting higher thresholds. Postgraduate coursework admission typically requires CGPA 5.0 on a 7-point scale or equivalent (approximately CGPA 7.0+ on the Indian 10-point scale). Each program publishes its specific cutoff on the Programs and Courses page.

What English Proficiency Tests Does ANU Accept?

ANU accepts the following English proficiency proofs:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 80 overall
  • PTE Academic: 64 overall
  • Cambridge English: 176 overall

IELTS Waiver Path for Indian Students: ANU may waive the IELTS requirement for applicants who completed their bachelor's degree fully in English at a recognised institution, with at least three years of recent study. Submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar at the time of application; the Admissions team will confirm waiver eligibility. Indian applicants from IITs, NITs, BITS, and major central universities frequently qualify.

What Documents Do Indian Students Need to Submit?

  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, scanned in color.
  • Bachelor's degree transcripts and provisional certificate (PG applicants).
  • If admitted, MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) apostille on academic transcripts (7 to 15 working days, ₹50 per document).
  • Passport copy (first and last pages).
  • IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE score report.
  • CV or resume (some programs).
  • One referee's contact details (some PG programs; not always a written LOR).
  • For Crawford School and some research-intensive programs, a learning outcome statement or research interest letter.

Are There Age or Prerequisite Course Requirements?

ANU does not publish a fixed age cap. International undergraduate applicants under 18 at the start of their program must arrange approved accommodation per Department of Home Affairs requirements. Some bachelor's programs have subject prerequisites at the Class 12 level (e.g., Mathematics for Computing, Physics for Engineering); these are listed on the individual program page.

ANU Popular Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students

Indian applicants apply across the Flexible Double Degree pathway, Bachelor of Advanced Computing, Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, Bachelor of Accounting, and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Flexible Double Degree. The honors year (typically the fourth year) is a pre-research-degree pathway for applicants targeting Master's or PhD studies.

Note: ANU also offers undergraduate programs admitting Indian applicants in:

  • Bachelor of International Relations: ANU's flagship discipline; pairs well with the College of Asia and the Pacific.
  • Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics: triple-major degree with research orientation.
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): 4-year honours degree with Australian Engineers Australia accreditation.
  • Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honors): research-intensive science degree for top admits.

ANU Popular Postgraduate Programs for Indian Students

Indian postgraduate applicants apply primarily to the Master of Computing, Master of Public Policy, Master of International Relations, Master of Diplomacy, and the broader Crawford School portfolio. ANU's postgraduate research (PhD) pathway is also a major Indian-applicant draw, particularly in the social sciences, public policy, Asia-Pacific studies, and computer science.

The Master of Computing is the headline program for Indian applicants with engineering or IT backgrounds. The Crawford School programs draw social sciences and humanities graduates targeting policy careers in India, Asia-Pacific, or multilateral organizations. ANU's research-intensive culture rewards applicants with a clear research interest and a defined post-study path.

Note: ANU also offers other relevant postgraduate programs:

  • Master of Engineering: 2-year coursework master's with Australian Engineers Australia accreditation.
  • Master of Diplomacy: 1.5-year specialized program at Crawford School.
  • Master of Applied Cybernetics: ANU School of Cybernetics flagship; distinctive among Australian masters.
  • PhD programs: 3 to 4 years, fully funded through the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship for Indian admits with strong research proposals.

The ANU Study Canberra India Scholarship is a joint scheme between ANU and the Australian Capital Territory Government, with up to 5 scholarships offered annually exclusively to Indian admits.

ANU Admission Tips for Indian Students

The most common Indian-applicant stumble at ANU is missing the program-specific deadlines for Crawford School and additional-selection-criteria programs, which close earlier than the standard semester deadline. The second most common stumble is incomplete document upload, which downgrades the application from a full offer to a conditional offer.

  • Lock IELTS or TOEFL at least 8 weeks before the deadline to allow one retake without missing the round.
  • MEA apostille on Class 10, 12, and bachelor's transcripts takes 7 to 15 working days; start before applying, not after the offer.
  • For Crawford School programs, apply by 31 October 2026 for Semester 1 2027, six weeks earlier than the general deadline.
  • Use up to three program preferences strategically; avoid stacking three programs with identical entry requirements.
  • Submit a Medium of Instruction letter from your bachelor's registrar to request an IELTS waiver if your degree was English medium.
  • For PhD applications, contact a prospective supervisor 3 to 6 months before applying; an unsolicited application without a supervisor letter is typically declined.
  • Use the LOR format guide for referee contacts; ANU uses online referee forms rather than uploaded letters.
  • Subclass 500 visa now takes ~33 days for Indian applicants under Evidence Level 3; budget 6 weeks plus 1 week buffer from offer to class start.
  • HDFC Credila, Avanse, and Auxilo take 3 to 4 weeks for education loan disbursement post-offer.
  • ANU guarantees on-campus accommodation to international undergraduate students starting in Semester 1; apply on the Accommodation Portal once admitted.

ANU Admissions: Action Plan for Indian Applicants

The action plan below sequences the steps an Indian applicant should follow against the next live deadline. Timing is deadline-relative, so the plan works whether you target the imminent S2 2026 deadline (15 May 2026), the main S1 2027 round (15 December 2026), or the Crawford School S1 2027 deadline (31 October 2026).

  1. Lock IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores at least 8 weeks before your target round deadline.
  2. Order MEA apostille on Class 10, 12, and bachelor's transcripts at least 4 weeks before the deadline; required for both application and Subclass 500 visa.
  3. Identify up to three preferred ANU programs at least 6 weeks before the deadline; verify each program's subject prerequisites.
  4. Submit referee contact details at least 3 weeks before the deadline so they can complete online forms.
  5. Pay the AUD 150 application fee and submit the complete application at least 1 week before the deadline; missing documents delay decisions.
  6. For PhD applications, contact a prospective ANU supervisor 3 to 6 months before applying to align research interests.
  7. Block 6 weeks after the offer letter for the Subclass 500 visa application, accommodation lock-in, and OSHC purchase.

ANU's distinctive admission angle for Indian applicants is its small ~20,700-student size, Australia's most international cohort, and the Crawford School of Public Policy as Asia-Pacific's leading policy research hub. This combination favors applicants with cross-cultural exposure and a defined research or policy interest, particularly in Asia-Pacific affairs, public policy, computer science, or international relations. The 5-star student-teacher ratio rating means each Indian admit gets meaningful faculty access, and the on-campus accommodation guarantee for Semester 1 international undergraduates removes a major settlement risk. For broader context on Australian university timelines and Indian-applicant pathways, see the Australian University Deadlines guide.

The next live deadline is 15 May 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Can Indian students apply to ANU?

Ans. Yes. Indian applicants are admitted across all 81 undergraduate, 129 postgraduate, and 2 doctoral programs every year. India is among the top 10 source countries for ANU's international cohort of 6,496 students from 100+ countries.

Ques. What is the ANU application fee for Indian students?

Ques. Is IELTS required for ANU admissions if I studied in an English-medium school in India?

Ans. ANU may waive the IELTS requirement for applicants who completed their bachelor's degree fully in English at a recognized institution, with at least three years of recent study. Submit a Medium of Instruction letter from your registrar at application; the Admissions team will confirm waiver eligibility. Most IIT, NIT, BITS, DU, and central university graduates qualify automatically.

Ques. What is the GMAT or GRE requirement for ANU master's programs?

Ans. ANU does not require GMAT or GRE for most coursework master's programs, including Master of Computing, Master of Public Policy, and Master of International Relations. Some research-intensive PhD pathways may consider the GRE as a strengthening document but rarely require it. Check program-specific requirements on the ANU Programs and Courses page.

Ques. How long does ANU take to release the admission decision?

Ans. Most applications are assessed within 1 to 3 weeks of complete submission. Programs with additional selection criteria (such as Crawford School masters or research-track programs) may take 4 to 6 weeks. PhD applications run on a program- and supervisor-dependent timeline, typically 6 to 12 weeks.

Ques. Are there scholarships for Indian applicants at ANU?

Ans. Yes. ANU offers more than 70 scholarships open to international students, with most automatically considered from the main application. The ANU Study Canberra India Scholarship is a dedicated India-only scheme offering up to 5 awards annually, jointly funded by ANU and the ACT Government. PhD applicants are eligible for the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship covering full tuition plus a living stipend.

Ques. Does ANU accept three-year bachelor's degrees from Indian universities?

Ans. Yes for most coursework master's programs. Both three-year and four-year bachelor's degrees from recognized Indian universities are accepted, with program-specific eligibility evaluated on the academic record. Some research-intensive PhD pathways prefer four-year honors degrees or a master's qualification first.

Ques. What is the visa success rate for Indian ANU admits?

Ans. India sits in Evidence Level 3 (the highest visa-processing risk category) under Australia's Simplified Student Visa Framework as of January 8, 2026. Subclass 500 processing now averages 33 days for Indian applicants but can extend if documentation is incomplete. Approval rates for Go8 admits like ANU remain above 90% when the full document set is submitted, including the CoE, financial proof, OSHC, and a complete Genuine Student statement.

Ques. Can I work in Australia after the ANU degree?

Ans. Yes. Indian graduates of ANU can apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) under the Post-Study Work Stream, allowing 2 to 4 years of work in Australia depending on degree level. Indian PhD graduates can receive up to 4 years. The base 485 visa fee is AUD 4,600 effective from 1 March 2026.

Ques. Does ANU have on-campus accommodation for international students?

Ans. Yes. ANU guarantees an offer of on-campus accommodation to international undergraduate students starting their first year in Semester 1. Apply on the ANU Accommodation Portal once admitted. Annual accommodation costs range from AUD 14,000 to 22,000 (~₹9.52 to 14.96 Lakhs) depending on the residence.

Ques. Can I reapply to ANU if rejected?

Ans. Yes. ANU permits reapplication for a later round or intake. The university provides limited individual feedback on rejected applications. Successful re-applicants typically demonstrate a meaningful change in profile: a higher IELTS, an improved academic average, a refined program choice, or a sharper research narrative for PhD candidates.

Overview

The overall experience has been great. I would recommend ANU to anyone interested in higher education. One of the most important thing is to network and seek help form faculties when needed.

Scholarship

College of engineering and computer science postgraduate merit scholarship which gives 25% on first year fees. For, PhD I get a stipend and my fees are covered.

Overview

ANU is the topmost Australian University and the only one funded by the national government. The supervisor was young and enthusiastic showed complete interest in my application and supported me throughout till I got accepted into the Ph.D. program. The facilities provided by ANU were excellent with a range of equipment and awesome labs.

Scholarship

I received an ANU Ph.D. Scholarship covering a stipend of 25,000 AUD/year and HDR Fee Remission Fellowship to cover fees of 36,000 AUD/year. Both were applicable for 4 years or the end of the Ph.D., whichever ends earlier. The scholarship application was submitted by the University on my behalf.

Overview

Australian National University (ANU) is ranked 1st in whole of Oceania and ranked 31th in QS world ranking, 2021. Apart from that, it has one of the best educational faculty having 8 Nobel prize winners including the present Vice Chancellor of ANU. It is the only university to be affiliated by the Australian parliament. I choose this particular program as it is the most flexible degree I can ever have. It has 3 majors and honours year for the 3 core subjects i.e. Finance, Statistics and Economics.

Scholarship

I got the Vice Chancellor International Scholarship worth $25,000(one-time). This scholarship is automatically provided to the deserving candidates from my university, based on many factors mainly your ATAR score. Other than that, there are many other types of scholarship which needs to be applied for.

Overview

Because of its reputation. I wanted to be in a university where research and workforce both were a part of a degree and this university is the only government-funded university in Australia. The professors are amazing, the campus is beautiful and the city is a place where students can easily focus.

Overview

Australian national university is ranked as one of the best institutions in the world for studying public policy. In addition, Canberra is a conducive environment for students and has a very open-minded community. The reason for choosing Australia over any other global destination is that it has one of the highest minimum wages and is one of the safest countries to live in.

The course structure covers a lot of related topics which I think are very helpful to develop all-around knowledge regarding the management of a business on an international level. Apart from that, the global ranking of the university (19th) is pretty impressive

Overview

I chose ANU for being the too University in the country, particularly for Law and anything internationally focussed. ANU is also 1 of 2 unis in Australia to offer development studies as its own degree rather than as an art major. The location of the uni and college life also really appealed to me.

Overview

It was ranked well and I wanted to move away. This uni has a good structure of degrees, allowing me to pick up another degree at the same time if I wanted. It had good living arrangements for me as well.

Scholarship

No. My degree is paid on HECS and my accommodation is paid by my parents. I have a part-time job but I use this money for myself.
