Australian National University Acceptance Rate 2026
ANU does not officially publish its acceptance rate. The estimated acceptance rate of 35% is based on third-party analysis of admissions data and is consistent across multiple sources. This makes ANU more selective than most Australian universities but less restrictive than the top global institutions.
The table below shows the estimated 3-year trend in ANU's acceptance rate.
| Year | Estimated Acceptance Rate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | ~35–40% | Stable; competitive for Go8 |
| 2025 | ~35% | Slight tightening; increased applications |
| 2026 | ~35% | Consistent; program-specific variation |
For Indian students, the acceptance rate varies significantly by program. High-demand programs such as Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, and Master of Computing (Advanced) are considerably more competitive. Programs like Master of Computing (open to all bachelor's graduates) and Master of Applied Data Analytics are more accessible for qualified applicants.
Reddit insight: "Australian universities are hungry for international students. If you meet the entry requirements and have a pulse, you have a good chance of getting in." However, ANU's competitive ranking process means meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission — applicants are ranked against each other.

Why Choose ANU Over Other Options
- ANU vs University of Melbourne: Melbourne ranks higher globally (#13 vs #=32) but ANU's employability ranking (#2 vs #1 in Australia) is comparable. ANU fees are slightly higher but the government/policy internship access in Canberra is unmatched. Melbourne is better for Medicine and Business; ANU is stronger for Policy, Law, and Research.
- ANU vs UNSW Sydney: UNSW ranks higher (#19 vs #=32) and is located in Sydney — a larger city with more industry connections for Finance and Engineering. ANU is stronger for Computing research, Policy, and International Relations. Both have comparable acceptance rates.
- ANU vs University of Queensland: ANU ranks significantly higher (#=32 vs #90) and offers better graduate salaries. UQ fees are lower. ANU is the better choice for students prioritising research quality and employability.
- ANU vs Monash University: ANU ranks higher (#=32 vs #73) with stronger research output. Monash fees are lower and Melbourne offers more industry connections. ANU is the stronger brand for government and policy careers.
The ANU Advantage for Indian Students: ANU is the only Australian university created by Parliament, giving it a unique relationship with the Australian government. This translates into exclusive internship opportunities, strong policy-focused programs, and a graduate network that includes two former Prime Ministers and the current Governor-General of Australia. For Indian students targeting careers in consulting, government, technology, or international relations, ANU's brand carries significant weight both in Australia and globally.
FAQs 2026
Ques. Is ANU good for Indian students?
Ans. ANU is one of the strongest choices for Indian students in Australia. It ranks #=32 globally (QS 2026), offers a dedicated Chancellor's International Scholarship — India category (25% tuition reduction, auto-considered), and guarantees on-campus accommodation for first-year UG international students. The large Indian student community (part of 7,000+ international students), strong post-study work rights (2–4 years on Subclass 485), and Canberra's highest average income in Australia make it a practical and academically strong option.
Ques. What IELTS score does ANU require?
Ans. ANU requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0 for most UG and PG programs. Some programs — particularly Law, Medicine, and Psychology — require higher scores (IELTS 7.0 overall, no band below 6.5). ANU also accepts TOEFL iBT (80+, no section below 20) and PTE Academic (64+, no section below 55). Indian students who completed their bachelor's degree entirely in English may be eligible for an English language waiver — check the specific program page on programsandcourses.anu.edu.au.
Ques. Does ANU offer scholarships specifically for Indian students?
Ans. Yes. The ANU Chancellor's International Scholarship — India is a dedicated category offering 25% off tuition fees for the full duration of the degree. It is awarded on academic merit and there is no separate application — all Indian students applying for admission are automatically assessed. With 200 scholarships on offer per intake, the chances are meaningful for strong applicants. A 25% reduction on AUD 53,370/year saves approximately AUD 13,343/year (~₹8.5L/year). The scholarship also includes an accommodation guarantee for the first year.
Ques. Is Canberra a good city for Indian students?
Ans. Canberra is a smaller, quieter city compared to Sydney or Melbourne — which is both a pro and a con. On the positive side, Canberra has Australia's highest average income, lowest unemployment rate, and is ranked the 3rd smartest city in the world (IMD 2023). The ANU campus is self-contained with a supermarket, pharmacy, cafes, and 24/7 libraries. The city has a growing Indian food scene, Indian cultural societies, and a safe, student-friendly environment. The main drawback is limited nightlife and fewer direct flights from India (transit via Sydney or Melbourne required). Reddit users consistently rate Canberra as excellent for focused study.
Ques. What is the post-study work visa option after ANU?
Ans. ANU graduates are eligible for the Australian Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, which allows work rights for 2–4 years depending on qualification level. A 2-year master's degree grants 4 years of post-study work rights; a bachelor's degree grants 2 years. The ACT (Canberra) also has its own state nomination program for skilled migration, which can provide additional points toward permanent residency (PR) through the Subclass 189/190/491 pathway. Canberra's government-heavy job market and ANU's strong employer network make the transition from study to work relatively smooth for international graduates.

- Scholarship, course offered, research output and good ranking.
- ANU is one the best ranked university in Australia(QS ranking). The primary reason to apply to ANU to do my masters was the course that was offered as well as the ranking.
- I wanted to pursue research or PhD in future, so having an high research output was also an important criteria. ANU also had good scholarship programs and I was lucky to get a percentage of my fee waived off for my masters.
Dislikes
- Probably the fees. I was lucky to get a scholarship and a student loan to support my studies but that is not true for everyone.
- My parents supported me for the first few months before I found a part time job but juggling financial stability and full time study isn't the easiest.
Overview
The overall experience has been great. I would recommend ANU to anyone interested in higher education. One of the most important thing is to network and seek help form faculties when needed.
Campus Life
Great, there is sport center that tries to accommodate all the major sports. My favorite are the libraries.
Overview
ANU is the topmost Australian University and the only one funded by the national government. The supervisor was young and enthusiastic showed complete interest in my application and supported me throughout till I got accepted into the Ph.D. program. The facilities provided by ANU were excellent with a range of equipment and awesome labs.
Fees
The doctoral program fee was 36,000 AUD/year but all students are either covered by the supervisor funding or by the university scholarship to technically make it free for Ph.D. students.
Overview
Australian National University (ANU) is ranked 1st in whole of Oceania and ranked 31th in QS world ranking, 2021. Apart from that, it has one of the best educational faculty having 8 Nobel prize winners including the present Vice Chancellor of ANU. It is the only university to be affiliated by the Australian parliament. I choose this particular program as it is the most flexible degree I can ever have. It has 3 majors and honours year for the 3 core subjects i.e. Finance, Statistics and Economics.
Fees
$192,000 AUD/4 year (excluding rent and personal expenses)
Overview
Because of its reputation. I wanted to be in a university where research and workforce both were a part of a degree and this university is the only government-funded university in Australia. The professors are amazing, the campus is beautiful and the city is a place where students can easily focus.
Fees
There are two parts. Semester 1 and semester 2. Due to being a domestic students I get commonwealth support which is I get subsidize fees which 4000 bucks approx every semester and there are scholarships for everyone. There is academic-based scholarship then sports then financial support too. I have savings which helped me pay.
Overview
Australian national university is ranked as one of the best institutions in the world for studying public policy. In addition, Canberra is a conducive environment for students and has a very open-minded community. The reason for choosing Australia over any other global destination is that it has one of the highest minimum wages and is one of the safest countries to live in.
Fees
An international postgraduate coursework student without scholarships pays anywhere around 80,000 AUD through the course of the program. There are plenty of scholarship opportunities that are available to ANU students throughout the year. This also includes emergency scholarship programs for students whose financial situation has changed drastically from the beginning of the prog.
Overview
The course structure covers a lot of related topics which I think are very helpful to develop all-around knowledge regarding the management of a business on an international level. Apart from that, the global ranking of the university (19th) is pretty impressive
Fees
Compared to other Universities the fee structure is a little expensive. I had paid around 45,200AUD for one year, the course is of 2 years duration. There are few other costs like OSHC and can range from 2000 AUD to 10,000 AUD depending on the student.
Overview
Very well know and world-renowned university, close to my home and has one of the top business schools in the country l, which is where my main area of study is. Has a great range of subject choices as well as on-campus experiences.
Fees
No upfront costs, all costs are out on debt and once students earn over a certain amount they then start to repay their debt.
Overview
I chose ANU for being the too University in the country, particularly for Law and anything internationally focussed. ANU is also 1 of 2 unis in Australia to offer development studies as its own degree rather than as an art major. The location of the uni and college life also really appealed to me.
Fees
Almost every domestic student puts their fees on the government loan scheme, HECS. Each subject falls into one of three bands, corresponding to the difficulty/expected income after graduation. As such, most people come out with $30,000+ of debt which you start paying incrementally when you earn $45,000. International students must pay up front. Other fees are involved for international courses, such as a semester abroad or international summer/winter courses. All have government and university funding, leaving a lesser amount for students to pay.
Overview
Australian National University has the best research unit for Astronomical instruments. As I am from instrumentation and wanted to work on Adaptive optics, I chose the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics of ANU.
Fees
As I am a Ph.D. student, I have wavered a college fee of 15000 AUD. Also, I am awarded a monthly stipend of 2500 AUD.
Overview
It was ranked well and I wanted to move away. This uni has a good structure of degrees, allowing me to pick up another degree at the same time if I wanted. It had good living arrangements for me as well.
Fees
My degree is paid for through a HECS lay that I pay back when I start earning enough. Other than that I pay a $150 service and amenities fee at the start of each semester.
