ICT M.Pharm FAQs
Ques. With only 6 seats in M.Pharm Pharmaceutics, how competitive is the admission process at ICT Mumbai, and what GPAT score is typically needed?
Ans. The M.Pharm Pharmaceutics programme at ICT Mumbai is extremely competitive given the very limited intake of just 6 seats. Admission is primarily based on GPAT scores (Level 1), and historically, candidates with a GPAT rank in the top 500-1000 have a reasonable chance of securing a seat, though the actual cutoff varies each year depending on the applicant pool. Non-GPAT candidates can also apply under Level 2 or Level 3 (ICT written test), but seats are first filled by GPAT-qualified candidates. Given the small batch size, it is advisable to also apply to other top institutions as a backup. The ICT website publishes merit lists after the admission process, which can give you a sense of the score range required.
Ques. Is the GPAT fellowship of Rs. 12,400 per month automatically given to all admitted students, or are there additional conditions?
Ans. The GPAT fellowship is not automatic for all admitted students. Only candidates who have a valid GPAT score and are admitted under Level 1 are eligible for the fellowship. Additionally, students must maintain a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in Semester I and II to continue receiving the full fellowship amount. If a student scores below 60% in Semester I or II, the fellowship is reduced to just Rs. 1,000 per month. Failure in Semester I results in complete discontinuation of the fellowship for the rest of the course. Students must also give an undertaking that they will not leave the course midway and will not accept any other fellowship, salary, or stipend from any other source during the programme.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Pharm Pharmaceutics and M.Tech Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at ICT Mumbai? Which is better for a pharma R&D career?
Ans. Both programmes are offered at ICT Mumbai but cater to slightly different career paths. M.Pharm Pharmaceutics is a PCI-regulated pharmacy programme focused on drug formulation, dosage form design, biopharmaceutics, and pharmaceutical technology, and is ideal for careers in formulation development, drug delivery research, regulatory affairs, and quality assurance in pharma companies. M.Tech Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, on the other hand, is an AICTE-regulated engineering programme with a stronger emphasis on chemical synthesis, process chemistry, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and is better suited for process R&D, API synthesis, and chemical engineering roles in pharma. For core formulation and drug delivery R&D, M.Pharm Pharmaceutics is the more appropriate choice. Both programmes offer GPAT/GATE fellowships and have strong placement records at ICT.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Pharm students at ICT Mumbai, and what are the actual living costs?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at ICT Mumbai is NOT guaranteed and is subject to availability. For M.Pharm students, approximately 19 seats are available for girls and 50 for boys across the hostels. Preference is given to outstation students (those coming from beyond Virar, Titwala, Ambarnath, and Panvel). The accommodation fees range from Rs. 16,555 to Rs. 22,605 per year depending on the hostel and room type, plus Rs. 5,000 per year in common charges. Mess charges are approximately Rs. 1,800 per month (around Rs. 21,600 per year), with a refundable mess deposit of Rs. 5,000 and advance mess charges of Rs. 20,000 required upfront. In total, hostel living costs (excluding the advance) are approximately Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 50,000 per year. Students who do not get hostel accommodation will need to arrange private accommodation in Mumbai, which can be significantly more expensive.
Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. at ICT Mumbai directly after completing M.Pharm Pharmaceutics from ICT itself, and what is the process?
Ans. Yes, M.Pharm graduates from ICT Mumbai (or any other recognised institution) are eligible to apply for Ph.D. (Tech.) in Pharmacy at ICT Mumbai, which is offered in four branches: Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmacognosy. The Ph.D. admission process involves an ICT entrance test and interview conducted by the institute. Candidates with valid NET/CSIR/DBT-JRF fellowships from government funding agencies are exempted from the ICT entrance test and can apply throughout the academic year. The minimum eligibility is 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA at both Bachelor's and Master's levels (50% for reserved category). The Ph.D. programme has a mandatory course work component of 18 credits, and the minimum duration is 3 years. ICT alumni pursuing Ph.D. here benefit from established research groups, well-equipped labs, and strong publication records in pharmaceutical sciences.
Ques. What career options are available after M.Pharm Pharmaceutics from ICT Mumbai, and is the median salary of Rs. 5.75 LPA realistic for fresh graduates?
Ans. M.Pharm Pharmaceutics graduates from ICT Mumbai typically enter roles such as formulation scientist, drug delivery researcher, regulatory affairs associate, quality assurance/quality control scientist, analytical development scientist, or process development chemist at leading pharma companies. The median salary of Rs. 5.75 LPA (as per NIRF 2024 data) is for the overall M.Pharm batch and is a realistic starting figure for core pharma R&D roles. However, salaries can vary significantly: core pharma companies typically offer Rs. 4-7 LPA for fresh M.Pharm graduates, while non-core companies (analytics, consulting, FMCG) or roles abroad can offer significantly higher packages. Many ICT M.Pharm graduates also opt for Ph.D. programmes in India or abroad (particularly in the US and Europe), where the ICT brand carries significant weight with international universities and research institutions. An MBA from a top B-school after a few years of work experience is another popular career trajectory for ICT pharmacy graduates.
