- Only focus on the college is EDUCATION. No unnecessary holidays, no teacher absence or irregularities.
- The college only admits good students which eventually creates a good environment for education. No ragging, very safe place to be in.
Dislikes
- No extra college fest making it a bit boring to be in.
- Hygiene in the college isn't maintained, especially the bathrooms and classes aren't cleaned properly.
- Too much strict about the attandance, though it's a good thing but it still have some disadvantages too.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose philosophy cause I read philosophical novels and I had an interest in it but honestly I'm not going with it in future. Though the department is excellent, the teaching staff is excellent and we get to learn about real world Philosophy, Ethics and morals. Teacher takes classes for major papers everyday and teaches every topic by ending providing notes. Viva and tutorials are the part of the course.. Area of improvement is that the teachers should provide more notes on English mode and teach in English mode as well because not everyone comfortable in Bengali. Frequency of examination is worse under Calcutta University, you don't get adequate time for preparation and that's the worst part.
Internships Opportunities
Actually I'm not aware of internship that much but each department gives the opportunity of internship in the summer vacation naming it summer internships. It is actually 15 days internship and an examination also takes place on the basis of it and the marks got printed in the result as well.
Fees and Financial Aid
I was admitted for my course by paying 4000 and semester fees somewhere range from rupees 300-1000 per semester. Humanities mostly have to pay under rupees 500 and science students above rupees 500. Scholarship such as SVMCM, AIKYASHREE, KANYASHREE. are provided, teachers including the office make sures to make every student apply for it. The criteria for application is scoring 60% in the last examination and belonging to a really BPL state. 12000/- AIKYASHREE/ SVMCM for humanities students and 18000/- for science students. The amount of KANYASHREE is somewhat about 25000/-.
Campus Life
The college hosts a single annual fest called AALAP, which takes place in the month of December. The library is well-stocked with a wide range of books and academic journals, supporting various fields of study. However, in terms of technology, the college is somewhat lagging behind — with most technological benefits being accessible primarily to Computer Science students. While Wi-Fi facilities are available, only the classrooms on the fifth floor are air-conditioned. The college also has an NSS Unit and a Union Room, which serve as the primary platforms for student social engagement and community activities.
Admission
I had applied for Ashutosh College and got admitted too but then I got to know that Ashutosh is all about politics, no regular classes nothing, full of raggings and toxicity. I personally didn't felt safe there and then I applied for Bethune, one of the top government women colleges in Kolkata with best teaching faculty and zero ragging or goons and no politics. It was a centralised admission portal and I want actually totally unaware about it. So I mistakenly jumbled my preference list. I placed the college wrongly and I put Ashutosh at following by Maulana Azad college. And being the number one of the preference list, I got Ashutosh and there was no way of downgrading. So I cancelled the admission there and then waited for mop up round and this time, i applied for Bethune college at first and got myself there. Cut-off here remains high all the time, and not everyone gets admitted here. Cut-off is actually 75% but only those who are above 85% gets admitted here.
Faculty
The college faculty is highly responsible and they aren't careless. Each teaching staff is doing the job with honesty. Doubt clearing classes takes places, the professors teach in way that every students gets the knowledge. They work as an individual mentor for a student. They takes for excursions to conducting webinars and seminars for awareness and knowledge. A Philosophy and Psychology faculty is valuable for a college because these subjects sharpen critical thinking, self-awareness, and understanding of human behavior all of which are essential in today's world, no matter the profession. And hence they are my favourite. I personally have no disliking for any department but I've heard from friends that Economic department doesn't conducts regular classes. The college is actually under Calcutta University and hence is one of the toughest university in India, exams are unevenly scheduled for some semesters we get a gap of 6 months and for the next maybe not even 2 months . Each semester we get 1 major paper added making it more hectic. Getting supplementary is very common because of the unpredictable nature of the question papers.
Night Life
The college is located near College Street, so there are several food stalls and cafes in the vicinity, making it convenient for students during the day. However, as the college closes by 5 PM, there are no options for evening or night hangouts. The hostel is located quite far from the college, with an entry time of 8 PM. On the brighter side, the hostel is situated in Salt Lake, an area known for its vibrant hangout spots, offering plenty of options for leisure and outings nearby.
