What Students Say
Likes
- The location of the campus (between mountains, offers a great scenic view)
- Good experimental setups for all the courses we need to study
- All the necessary utilities are available in or near the campus
Dislikes
- Most classes don't have air conditioning which really stings in summers
- Hostel food isn't always good. It has its ups and downs
- Since there is no real blockage on intake of students, there are some students that may interfere with an otherwise good experience
Course Curriculum Overview
Honestly there was no part of the curriculum that influenced my decision. I wanted to study in the mountains and the two universities I applied to were both in mountain areas. Plus I knew this course would be good for the future. Curriculum is very well designed to prepare one for the industry. Mid semester exams may come too soon after a semester starts and will be completed as soon as possible. If you have 5 exams, it will be a continuous week of exams for you.
Internships Opportunities
The first year, you get to do a social internship which is often unpaid. Second year's startup internship may be paid if the company decides. I have no idea what the future semesters have in terms of internship.
Placement Experience
6th semester is the time when students may apply for placements. Microsoft , amazon , HCL etc 50 LPA was the highest package and the average package reaches 5 LPA. 80% students get placed. Getting a job after the degree and assess the industry for need of masters degree or not.
Fees and Financial Aid
Varies every year but stays around the ball park of 4 lakhs per year for Bachelor of Technology. This is the total fees you need to be paying every year which includes everything from support fees , technical fees and fees for industrial visits etc. Domicile brings the fees down to around 3.8 Lakhs per year. If you appear for CUET , JEE or UPESEAT(UPES' own admission test), you may be eligible for upto 15% scholarship depending on your score.
Campus Life
Uurja(annual day, winters) , Dholida(Monsoon) , Ukti(spring). All the necessary books and journals are available in the library which is opposite to the sports ground having badminton , football, cricket , volleyball. There are multiple student run clubs and chapters. But they dont seem that important to me as they make no impact on your resume.
Hostel Facilities
I have a double sharing attached washroom which is a good enough room in terms of size for 2 people with a decent sized bathroom. Mess has its ups and downs. Sometimes it will be the best hostel food in India and other times it will be just as bad. Registeration for hostel is done on a first come first serve basis and i think the fees is a bit high at 2.2 Lakhs per year.
Admission
Applied to JUIT Solan for the same course and got accepted. This was the only other college in mountain area offering this course without needing to have maths in your 12th class. I only applied to the 2 colleges-JUIT and UPES. Eligibility criteria-55% in 10+2 Exams accepted- JEE , UPESEAT, CUET.
Faculty
There are more than enough faculties for students. There never is a shortage. Most faculties are approachable but the ones who aren't are most of the time busy with research. Piyush Kumar is a professor here who understands the psychology of students and can put himself in our shoes. Snigdha Mishra can do the same. There are two exams- Mid semester and End semester. Approximately 30% students may fail an exam. Course curriculum is very relevant for the most part. I do think there is something about the industry that the experts may know that we don't and that's why they put it in the syllabus.
Night Life
I am an avid gym guy and i approve the gym here. The cafetria has good cooks. In the hostel, you have to be back in your rooms by 10:30 PM. Return time to hostel from outside is 8 PM. There are multiple cafes around the campus which are always occupied. The locality is mostly safe but there is an occasional reporting of leaopard sighting
