- There was a distinct lack of encouragement to pursue extracurricular activity.
- Sometimes it felt like it would have helped if we had a mental health counsellor onboard with the department.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum was highly relevant and comprehensive. Including practical labs for every subject studied and theory was helpful. paper presentations, research projects and conference participations were also encouraged Some improvements could be made in bioinformatics Exams were tough and were held at the end of the semester.
Placement Experience
Techno India University has a strong campus placement. Several students got jobs during the last semester, and I am one of them. Some others choose to wait for better opportunities. Some joined good startups. The package was nominal as we were all freshers. After getting my degree, I planned to pursue corporate experience and then join a lab for my PhD.
Fees and Financial Aid
I pursued my MSc in Microbiology at Techno India University, Kolkata, from 2014 to 2016. The total fee for the two-year course was 2.5 lakhs rupees. It was paid in four semesters. The amount covered is tuition, lab, library, and development fees. Exam fees were extra. Overall, the fee did not change much during the entire tenure of my study. I did not avail of any reservation for my admission. The fees for general students and well as the reserved students were the same. There were no merit-based
Campus Life
Campus life was good. It had a blend of academic rigor and vibrant student life. The university held annual fests and Sanskriti (cultural) activities. There were events like competitions, exhibitions, hackathons, and performances. It allowed students to showcase talent and interact with other departments.
Admission
During the admission cycle of my master's, I applied to a few reputed universities like the University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University. I cleared the entrance exam at some of them. Techno India University offered a more streamlined and transparent admission process The admission was based on merit and it made it more accessible.
Faculty
The ratio of faculty - students in MSc was reasonable. There was 1 faculty for every 10 students. The teachers were approachable. Among the professors, I like Dr. Arindam Mitra. he had a good depth of knowledge and encouraged us to be interactive. some of the faculties were, unapproachable and preferred to be contacted through emails only. The teaching was dependent heavily on presentations and textbook content, which helped us gain theoretical knowledge. Exams were tough and one had to really study for the tricky questions. but overall, almost all the students passed the exams if they studied hard.
Night Life
The university is located in sector V of Salt Lake, Kolkata. It's a tech Hub that offers a decent nightlife and hangout scene. While the campus winds down after 7 pm, the surrounding areas have a lot of things to do. There are restaurants, coffee places, as well as cheap eateries like food trucks. It helped to create memories and complete my overall academic journey.
