What Students Say
Likes
- The alumni and the seniors are very good and helpful ,they believe in growing together unlike many other colleges
- The faculties here are also very experienced and are actually world class ,some of them are prodigies of their own time and are very helpful
- The infrastructure and lab facilities are outstanding but the coursework is very rigorous and it should be considering it as an old IIT
Dislikes
- As mentioned earlier ,the coursework is too much compared to some other old IITs ,the number of subjects that we have to learn within 2 years is a lot ,although all credit courses are completed in the first year itself
- The hostel facilities are sometimes very disheartening but it varies from hostel to hostel ,kgp has a total of 20+ hostels ,of which I am from MMM which has the 2nd highest number of students
- The work flows at a very high pace here in the MTech course as we are supposed to do our coursework alongside our projects , internships and other works
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is very diverse in our stream spanning from System design to Web Developement to Machine Learning to Artificial Intelligence. The curriculum actually is very relevant to current world application requirements so it is very helpful. The number of subjects could be reduced as it is actually too much at a certain point of time, mainly the Lab works are very challenging. The exams aren't easy as said earlier too ,but it builds up the foundation of the student in a nice way.
Internships Opportunities
The companies are mainly product based companies like Bosch ,TI ,Accenture , Plivo , IBM, Microsoft , Amazon and others come for internships and the roles are primarily SDE ,ML scientist ,Data Analyst ,System designer etc.
Placement Experience
For MTech ,placements typically occur in the 3rd semester and almost all students sit for it. Many Product based companies visit here including the MAANG companies and many Quant and fintech companies too. The placements go for 10+ days considering the interview phase ,the OA rounds start from the month of September itself at the end of first year. The highest package offered was around 1.5 cr from CSE (BTech) and from MTech it was around 70lpa. Almost 90 percent students of MTech CSE are placed till now of our previous batch. I plan to get a job from here but plans might change based on my projects.
Fees and Financial Aid
For the odd semesters the fees are around 60k in total and for the even semesters it's around 55k for general Category students. For SC and ST candidates there is a relaxation of around 6k in the tution fees per semesters. The library allows 6 books to be issued at once for gen students and around 11 books for SC and ST candidates. There are stipends for the TA students for the MTech program which is 12,400 rupees monthly. For MS students it is around 37,000.
Campus Life
There are many such events happening all around the year including tech fests ,spring fests and seminars all over the year. The technical staffs are world class and have very good facilities all around the campus.
Hostel Facilities
Our rooms are mainly 2 sharing in MMM and it is quite good for a government hostel . We have a attached bathroom which is common for 2 adjacent rooms ,so 4 people use one bathroom. The meal quality is not that good and as expected because they prepare food for nearly 2500 people. Hostel registration is done alongside college registration and it is considered with the overall semester fees. I live in the hostel so I don't know much .
Admission
I actually applied for IIT KGP as it was my dream college from my childhood itself .With my rank indeed I could have got many other colleges but I preferred this college over others for many reasons including the environment ,placement scenarios and the people here. No,I didn't get any rejection from other colleges as I hadn't applied for many. For the MTech course mainly the GATE exam is the sole criterion for admission, for our CSE branch a score of 700+ in GATE would give a high chance of admission here. The admission experience was very smooth indeed and was done within a month including formalities and registration and hostel allocation.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is around 1:40 considering all departments. From my department the best faculties I had were PPC sir (former director of KGP) ,Pawan Goyal sir ,Abhignan Sir and many others were there due to their close connection with students alongside their deep knowledge in their domains. There are not as such faculties who I dislike but some of them have a very rigorous schedule which would be beneficial in the longer run. The exams are "IIT" level ,they aren't easy and mugging up won't help ,you have to study the same day your professors are teaching else studying on the last night won't help here in IIT for sure.
Night Life
Gyms are of two types here ,hall gyms which are free and the bigger gymkhana gym which is paid ,there are usually timings in two shifts ,one morning and one evening.Libraries are open from 9 am till 1am at night (during exams). Public areas are mostly under high surveillance by the security of kgp. Hostel and campus doesn't have as such timings. Inside the hostel there are many places like the gymkhana ,lake ,nehru museum ,helipad, tech market and many other places.
