What Students Say
Likes
- The thing that I appreciated the most was the beach nearby which eventually we lost intrest in roaming around , made wonderful friends and also the nearby trekking places like coorg , Chikmanglur, etc.Incident and Enginner the two fests of NiTK.
- The fact that there is the system of self learning where the faculty only gives you information when u ask him , if students are not interested, mostly faculty just finishes the slides and leaves the class, a nice lesson for tha stubborn batch.
- There are mixed answers for the faculty because there are professors who are exceptionally in there field whereas some are still stuck behind with old traditional ways of teaching and sometimes if u are lucky enough the teacher keeps open book exams
Dislikes
- The things I disliked the most was the administration is way too slow in doing works , like the LAN internet keeps going down and nobody does anything about it , there are no washing machines available for us and the laundry services are quite expens
- When I entered the college there was no swimming pool and still there was swimming pool fees charged , and the college took 2.5 years to complete the construction of just 1 swimming pool and today is 15 th Jan and still its not stated for us to swim
- They say we have a lush green campus of 300 acres but to be honest only 10-15 acres is accessible for students , and rest is all for the faculty quarters and the forest where nobody goes. The college is far away from city makes us feel like a village.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum in NITK is very good and covers many important topics needed for engineering. It is designed to give both theoretical and practical knowledge, which is helpful for students. One of the main reasons for choosing this course was the variety of subjects offered and the flexibility to choose electives and minors. The option to do projects and internships also influenced the decision because they give practical experience, which is important for learning. The curriculum prepares students well for real-world applications because it includes projects, lab sessions, and assignments that are based on industry requirements. For example, in ECE, subjects like analog circuits, digital design, and communication systems are directly useful in the job market. It also helps in further academic pursuits because the foundational courses and core subjects are strong, and students can build on this knowledge for higher studies. But there are areas where improvements are needed. Some parts of the curriculum feel outdated and do not match current industry standards, especially in fast-changing fields like AI or data science. More interdisciplinary courses should be added so students can learn about related fields. Faculty teaching methods also need to improve. Some professors should adopt modern teaching techniques, like using real-world examples or interactive tools, to make classes more engaging. Exams are held regularly with mid-semester exams and end-semester exams, along with quizzes and assignments. The frequency is good because it keeps students on track. The exams are not too difficult if you study properly, but they can be tough for students who do not prepare well. The questions test both conceptual knowledge and practical application, which is a good thing. However, more real-world problems should be included to make the exams more relevant to current challenges in the industry.
Placement Experience
Placements in NITK Surathkal is very good and gives lots of opportunities for students. Students become eligible for campus placements in their seventh semester. Many top companies visit the campus for placements and almost all students get placed if they prepare well. The placement process is organized and the institute has strong ties with industries. For example, in recent placement season, Computer Science and Engineering department had 99.8% placement rate. Highest package offered was ?58 lakhs per annum and average package was ?29 lakhs per annum. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Adobe visited campus and hired many students. The profiles offered were mostly in software development, data science, and cloud engineering. The Electronics and Communication Engineering department also did very well with 96.43% placement rate. Highest package for this branch was ?54.75 lakhs per annum and average package was around ?16 lakhs per annum. Companies like Qualcomm, Intel, and Texas Instruments visited for hiring. In Information Technology, placements were also great. Out of 137 eligible students, 102 got placed on campus and 4 got off-campus placements. The highest salary package offered in IT was ?55 lakhs per annum and average package was ?24.56 lakhs per annum. The profiles offered included software engineering, system design, and machine learning. Chemical Engineering had 92.59% placement rate. The highest package for this branch was ?32 lakhs per annum and median package was ?12 lakhs per annum. Companies like Reliance, BPCL, and Honeywell hired students for roles in process engineering and production management. Overall, placement rate for most departments is very high and institute provides support for students to get good job offers. The highest packages in some branches are very impressive but even average packages are good compared to many other colleges.
Fees and Financial Aid
I would like to start with saying that considering it to be a government institute, I didn't expect the fees to be this high for a general candidate.I has to take a loan for the four years. And if you belong to SC/ST , PWD or Annual family income is less than 1lakh than your tution fees is waived off. If family income is in between 1 to 5 lakh annually, then the tution fees is waived 66% off , I will mention down the fees for a general candidate with annual family income above 5 lakh and rest other deductions can be interpreted accordingly. Even semester fees Tuition Fee 62500 Hostel rent 6950 Establishment Charges 8100 Maintenance. 3690 Mess Advance 22000 And in odd semester in addition to even semester fees extra is Library and E-resources Fee 2320 Career Development Fee 1160 Health Care Facility 1160 Students Activities Fee 5210 Campus Amenities 1160 Group Insurance Coverage 510 Central Computing Facility and Digital Resources 2900 And yes college does provide a scholarship, there are many related to SC/ST category , and also for Jee rank holders a monthly scholarship of 2k and yearly scholarship of 10k , named merit cum and merit scholarships respectively. Also there are other contests held in the college during fests which have prize money. Also there are scholarships provided by BPCL for the first year students in all NiTS , and if u are a Karnataka domicile then for students studying in institutions of national importance like Nits , IITs and IIMs , karnataka government offers one time incentive of 2 Lakhs for students with annual family income less than 2lakh.
Campus Life
NITK offers a dynamic campus life that balances academics, social activities, and state of the art infrastructure, ensuring holistic student development. The annual festivals, "Incident" in February and "Engineer" in October, are highlights that attract participants nationwide, featuring events like dance, dramatics, music, quizzes, hackathons, and Pro-Nite performances by renowned artists. The central library provides an extensive range of books, journals, e-resources, and digital materials accessible to students and faculty, supporting academic and research pursuits. Classrooms are equipped with projectors and high-speed internet, fostering an interactive learning environment. The campus features excellent sports facilities, including a modern sports complex for indoor games like badminton, chess, and table tennis, and outdoor sports like football, cricket, and basketball. Student life thrives with a variety of clubs, including IEEE for electrical and electronics enthusiasts, the Robotics Club for projects and competitions, the Linux Users Group promoting open-source software, and the Entrepreneurship Cell encouraging innovation and leadership. Cultural engagement is enriched by the Literary, Stage, and Debating Society for debates and theater, the Dance, Dramatics, and Fashion Club hosting vibrant cultural events, and SPICMACAY promoting Indian classical arts. The Music Club organizes musical nights, the Photography Club captures campus life and hosts contests, and the Artists' Forum fosters creativity through art events. Social impact is driven by the Rotaract Club, which leads community initiatives like blood donation and clean-ups. These clubs, along with the rich academic and extracurricular opportunities, ensure a balanced and fulfilling experience, preparing students to excel academically and socially.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facility is quite affordable as compared the the outside rented places , we literally pay 7k for entire semesters stay and it includes electricity water etc. the room as 2-3 switch boards , light , fan and basic furniture including bed , study table chair , cupboard. I first two years there are shared rooms whereas in the next two years you get a single room. The mess food is just like any other mess , hygiene is maintained but the taste is good only for the first few weeks of semester start , after that we wonder whether the food taste started deteriorated or we got fed up of same taste , one more thing to notice is that this is a costal area and w thought surely they will offer fish in the mess but surprisingly it turns out that they never do. The registration process of hostel rooms are on first come first serve basis and best thing about this is it happens on our own students built app called IRIS portal web and app both , where we register mess and hostel room smoothly, no standing in queues anymore. Fees payment is also available on IRiS portal.mostly all the students stay at the hostel provided by college only , nobody apart from students who have there home nearby are dayscholars , so this is the case. Apparently u may get a pg nearby but as it's near to the beach and sea , so it won't be affordable.
Admission
The other colleges which I applied were IIT BHU ceramic engineering and other NITs too, I chose this college mainly because I was getting a good branch ECE as well as I was getting to stay in my own home state so that it would be easy for me to come and go.I had also applied for the IIST where I got aerospace engineering seat but by the time I got that I had already paid fee for nitk Surathkal and also my interest towards electronics made me choose nitk over iist .Also I got RVCE computer science but I didn't want to go there as I would have to leave NIT with good branch .Nitk Surathkal offers admission in 2 modes that is DASA and JoSaa both requires to give Jee mains exam .The cutoffs for NiTk Surathkal and actually high because it's one of the top Nits in the country. And the other factor which made me choose NiT surathkal was the placements here were insanely good compared to the colleges i was getting. My overall experience in admission was smooth apart from the hardwork from jee which was tiring and tidious.
Faculty
Faculty in NITK is very good and most of them are very smart. Faculty-student ratio is also ok, and they give us Faculty Advisor to help in studies and guide us in career. In ECE department, Dr. Laxminidhi is very good in teaching analog and RF circuits, and Dr. Ramesh Kini teaches digital design very nicely and explains everything clearly. Some faculties are not as good because they don’t explain properly or their teaching is very boring, so it becomes hard to understand. But mostly, faculty is nice and helpful to students. BTech course has 8 semesters. It has Foundation Courses, Core Courses, Electives, Projects, and Mandatory Learning Courses. We need to complete 160-170 credits total, and there are options for electives and minors also. This gives flexibility to choose subjects according to interest, but sometimes the elective choices are limited. The projects and internships help in getting hands-on experience, which is very good for practical learning. Exams are mid-semester (20-25%), end-semester (40-50%), and also quizzes and assignments (25-40%). Grading is from AA (10 points) to FF (fail), and 75% attendance is must for writing exams. They also show us answer sheets after exams, and if any issue, we can complain about it officially. The exam difficulty is ok, not too hard or too easy, but if you don’t study properly, then it can become tough to pass. Some students fail, but they can write makeup exams for passing. The course structure and curriculum are good because it includes a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge. There is also an option for taking MOOCs (like NPTEL or SWAYAM) to get extra credits, which is useful. The inclusion of liberal arts and extracurricular activities is also nice as it gives a break from studies and helps develop other skills. But sometimes, the curriculum feels outdated in some areas, and it needs to be updated to match current industry standards. One thing that can be improved is faculty training.
Night Life
NITK Surathkal has a nice balance of study and relaxation, with places for students to relax after classes. The campus has cafeterias and night canteens open until midnight, offering different foods for late-night cravings. The library and gym close by evening, encouraging students to manage their time well. Hostels have safety rules, with first-year students following a curfew starting at 7 PM and gradually extending to 11 PM, while seniors have more flexible timings. Popular spots for hanging out on campus include NITK Beach and NITK Lighthouse. Outside the campus, students visit nearby places like Infinity Cafe, about 300 meters from the main gate, and restaurants in Surathkal and Mukka. The area around the campus is safe for nighttime outings, so students can explore without much worry. These experiences make college life at NITK enjoyable and help students grow socially.
