NITK Surathkal B.Tech ECE FAQs

Ques. How is ECE at NITK Surathkal for core placements in semiconductor and VLSI companies?

Ans. ECE at NITK Surathkal is one of the best options for core semiconductor and VLSI placements among NITs. Companies like Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung R&D, Intel, Broadcom, and Analog Devices regularly recruit from the campus. Students with strong fundamentals in VLSI, digital design, and embedded systems have a good chance of landing core roles. The department also has dedicated VLSI and embedded systems labs that help students prepare for these roles.

Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required to get ECE at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, the General category (Other State) closing rank for B.Tech ECE at NITK Surathkal was approximately 5,000-5,500 in the final rounds. Home State (Karnataka) candidates typically need a rank in the range of 3,500-5,000. OBC-NCL candidates can expect admission with ranks up to approximately 2,000-2,500. These figures vary each year, so always check the official JoSAA closing ranks for the most recent year.

Ques. Is ECE at NITK Surathkal better than CSE for higher studies abroad?

Ans. Both ECE and CSE at NITK Surathkal have strong track records for MS admissions abroad. ECE students often pursue MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or VLSI Design at top US universities (MIT, Stanford, CMU, UIUC, etc.). The department's research exposure, strong faculty, and alumni network in the USA and Europe make it an excellent launchpad for higher studies. Many ECE graduates also transition to software roles after MS, giving them flexibility.

Ques. What are the hostel and campus facilities like at NITK Surathkal for ECE students?

Ans. NITK Surathkal has a beautiful coastal campus near the Arabian Sea in Mangalore. Hostel accommodation is available for all students, with separate blocks for boys and girls. The campus has a Central Computer Centre, well-equipped departmental labs, a library, sports facilities, and a health care centre. The ECE department has dedicated labs for VLSI, communication, microprocessors, and signal processing. The campus life is vibrant with technical fests like "Engineer" and cultural fests like "Incident."

Ques. Can ECE students at NITK Surathkal switch to CSE after the first year?

Ans. Yes, NITK Surathkal has a branch change policy that allows students to apply for a branch change after the first year based on CGPA. However, switching to CSE is extremely competitive and typically requires a CGPA above 9.5. The number of seats available for branch change is very limited. Students who are genuinely interested in electronics and communication should consider ECE as a strong branch in its own right at NITK.

Ques. What is the difference between ECE and EEE at NITK Surathkal in terms of curriculum and placements?

Ans. ECE (Electronics and Communication Engineering) focuses on electronics, communication systems, VLSI, signal processing, and RF engineering, while EEE (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) focuses more on power systems, electrical machines, control systems, and power electronics. In terms of placements, ECE tends to attract more semiconductor and IT companies, while EEE attracts power sector companies (NTPC, BHEL, L&T) and core electrical firms. Both branches have good placement records at NITK, but ECE generally has a higher average package due to IT and semiconductor sector demand.

NIT Surathkal: 6 Answered Questions

What is it like to be in ECE branch at NIT Warangal/ Surathkal/Calicut? How is the campus life and placements (companies visiting, kind of jobs, average packages)?

Arnav RoyLives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

I have a friend who studies in the ECE branch at NIT Warangal. I will break down his overall experience into simpler aspects

Academics: The curriculum and academic life at NIT Warangal for ECE students is a bit more challenging than others. Some semesters have too many courses and it’s difficult to get free time. The grades are given a lot of importance and students face tough competition. Also, the faculty is not very approachable.

  • Campus life: The campus life of students of all branches is similar. Equal opportunities and facilities are offered and students experience a productive ambiance where they can work on their passions.
  • Hostels : The hostel facilities are top-notch and both old and new hostels are available. Students get a home-like feel in these cozy buildings and make friends for life.
  • Mess food: Mess food is better than food served in intermediate hostels. However, students can opt for eating out if the food in the mess is unsatisfactory. The eateries outside serve decent food at low prices.
  • Sports : The sports culture here is not very prominent and you won’t be forced to be involved in any such activities.
  • Extracurricular : A number of clubs promote extracurriculars with ECEA being the most active association.
  • Peer group: Your batchmates will be the most hardworking and smartest people in the institute so peer group quality should be the last thing to worry about.
  • Placements : Both core and non-core placement opportunities are offered to ECE students. Here are the detailed stats for the same

Which is better: NIT Goa ECE or NITK EEE?

Piyali RaoB.Tech Information Technology, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2021)

Among these two courses and colleges, you should probably choose EEE at NITK. Having to know some people studying in both these institutes, I can say that the infrastructure and facilities provided at NIT Goa are very poor, it is also below NITK in terms of rankings.

  • The campus of NITK is very beautiful with lush green surroundings. NIT Goa is much smaller and might be built inside a state government-run college. Students can enjoy leisure time along with their studies.
  • The faculty is very talented and highly experienced.
  • The course curriculum is updated according to the recent industry trends.
  • The placement opportunities are excellent. A lot of companies visit the campus for interviews.
  • NITK is also better if you want to do higher studies like machine learning, etc.
Categories EEE at NIT Surathkal
Course Fee 5.40 lakh
Highest CTC 14-15 LPA
Average CTC 8-9 LPA
Recruiting Companies Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, nVidia, Western Digital, etc.

Hence, choosing EEE at NITK will be a better option as the faculty, infrastructure, and placements of this college is great and there is also a very good scope of higher studies.

Which is easier, EEE or ECE at NIT Surathkal?

Nikhil Ranjan
Tanushree SenB.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

I have a few friends at NIT Surathkal and based on the conversation I had with them, I will say at NIT Surathkal, ECE is considered to be the toughest branch.

  1. The academics and research are taken very seriously in the department.
  2. The professors are demanding and highly qualified than other departments.
  3. In this department everyone, from HOD to lab assistants, everyone is serious about studies and making a point about academic rigor.
  4. The exams are also very tough and students even fail in lab examinations too.

But the scenario at the EEE department of NIT Surathkal is slightly different and its biggest advantage is that it has a relaxed attendance policy, unlike other branches.

The recent placement statistics for the branches are as follows.

Which is better, IIT Bhubaneswar for mechanical or NIT Surathkal for ECE?

Sakshi Gupta
Kritika AgarwalStudied at Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology, Ghaziabad (2020)

As your choice of course is different, it’s hard to select between IIT Bhubaneswar and NIT Surathkal.

According to the NIRF 2019, IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked at 26, which is a good rank considering it’s a new IIT. The Mechanical Engineering department is quite good at IIT Bhubaneswar. According to the 2019 placement record, 83% students got job offers from Mechanical Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar. Many famous companies such as Amazon, H Jindal Stainless Ltd, KEC International, KIIT, Rao Edusolutions, TATA steel, TATA Advance System, Thermax, TETCOS, TESCO, UHG, and other companies as well recruited students last year.

NIT Surathkal is a well-reputed name in Indian Engineering institutions. According to NIRF Ranking, it ranks at 22 nationally among engineering institutes in India. ECE in this NIT is even better as compared to a few IITs. The placement records of 2018-19 show that 97% of placement offers were received by students in this department. The average placement offer was 12-13 LPA.

Both IIT Bhubaneswar for Mechanical and NIT Surathkal for ECE are good choices with their own advantages. So, choose wisely according to your convenience.

Which is better, IIT Bhubaneswar for ECE, BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus for CSE or NIT Surthkal for ECE?

Mohit Sarohi
Subir GhoshM.E from Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani (2017)

BITS is the better choice among all as CSE has more scope than ECE. And NIT Surathkal is an old institute with a better placement record than IIT Bhubaneswar.

Since BITS Hyderabad is the newest among all other campuses and it certainly is a little behind in terms of faculty, infrastructure, etc. But when compared on a national level it is on par with any other institute. It provides the students with a prime location to look for internships and also provides an edge to them if they are opting for off-campus placements. Although the institute provides students with decent opportunities for on-campus placements also. Around 200 companies visit the campus each year and around 94% of the student secured a job through campus placements with an average package of around 5-6 lakhs per annum and the highest package offered was as high as 14 lakhs per annum.

NIT Surathkal is among the top NITs of this country. The placements of students of this branch are also good although NIT Trichy and Warangal have better placement records. The average placement package offered at this NIT is around 14.15 LPA and 100% placement was observed for B.Tech batches in last year’s placement drive.

ECE is one of the new branches that started at IIT Bhubaneswar starting from 2016. Hence the first batch of students will graduate in 2020. In 2019, the average CTC offered in this IIT was 11.44 LPA. Many core companies, software companies, PSU’s, etc. hire electrical engineers from IIT Bhubaneswar hence one can assume the same trend to be followed for electronics and communication engineering also but the result is yet to be seen.

I would like to start with saying that considering it to be a government institute, I didn't expect the fees to be this high for a general candidate.I has to take a loan for the four years. And if you belong to SC/ST , PWD or Annual family income is less than 1lakh than your tution fees is waived off. If family income is in between 1 to 5 lakh annually, then the tution fees is waived 66% off , I will mention down the fees for a general candidate with annual family income above 5 lakh and rest other deductions can be interpreted accordingly. Even semester fees Tuition Fee 62500 Hostel rent 6950 Establishment Charges 8100 Maintenance. 3690 Mess Advance 22000 And in odd semester in addition to even semester fees extra is Library and E-resources Fee 2320 Career Development Fee 1160 Health Care Facility 1160 Students Activities Fee 5210 Campus Amenities 1160 Group Insurance Coverage 510 Central Computing Facility and Digital Resources 2900 And yes college does provide a scholarship, there are many related to SC/ST category , and also for Jee rank holders a monthly scholarship of 2k and yearly scholarship of 10k , named merit cum and merit scholarships respectively. Also there are other contests held in the college during fests which have prize money. Also there are scholarships provided by BPCL for the first year students in all NiTS , and if u are a Karnataka domicile then for students studying in institutions of national importance like Nits , IITs and IIMs , karnataka government offers one time incentive of 2 Lakhs for students with annual family income less than 2lakh.

Fees and Financial Aid:

Iam doing btech in ece branch , where for each semester the academics fee will be some where around 75k, and other than that mess fee is different which is 33k for each semester. And iam from obc and have income certificate with annual income of 11lpa+ , so i won't get any fee remissions and no scholarships also, where many people get almost 100% fee remission and extra scholarships. For people having income certificate with less than 2lpa , they will not be charged with any academic fee, that means only 30k for mess for each semester will be charged. For sc and st people they don't care about income certificate, directly they clear your academic fees.
