IITH - A complete guide for beginners.

The course, engineering physics was chosen based on my choices and interests. After IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad offers the best EP course available in the IITs. The course is really helpful for people interested in research. It covers almost all areas of physics, giving us an idea of our favoured field.

As a first year, i am not generally aware of the internship opportunities, but I've heard great things about them. Some seniors of my branch interned in Germany, for LIGO, for companies like Google and Amazon, etc.

The campus placements are really good for students in branches like CS, AI, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics and computing. Equal Opportunities are given to people from other branches like physics, civil engineering and mechanical engineering in their respective fields and if they choose to minor in CS or AI and the like. Major companies include Oracle, Samsung, Intel, whirlpool, TCS, Accenture, Axis Bank, etc. However, as I am more research oriented, i wish to get a PhD and become a professor in an Ivy League college.

Per year, the tuition fee is 2 lakhs (1 laksh per semester). Hostel and mess fees sum up to around 64000 a year. SC and ST category students are exempted from tuition fee. Other compulspry charges included, the total comes to 3.1 lakhs annually. Lot of scholarships are offered to EWS students, SC and ST category students, female students, etc.

There are many capus festivities, like Milan, which is an inter hostel competition (September), Elan, the annual tech fest, (February), Inter IIT competitions (December). The library is awesome, its nver ending bookshelves and easily accessible shelving system makes it easy and fun to find books to read. The sports facilities are impressive, with swimming pools, gym, courts for all sports, indoor games etc. There are a lot of clubs too, like finance club, mental health, art, music, books, theater arts, etc.

The hostel facilities are really gold, from 2nd year everyone gets a single room. The mess food is edible and tasty, but it gets slightly repetitive after some time. We can register for a mess every month.

I wanted to get into IIT Madras, but since it is purely based on the JEE advanced results, I couldn't get a better branch and IIT at the same time. I prioritized branch over college, and as I was deeply interested in physics, opted for this course in IITH. There is no other way for IITs than writing JEE Mains and Advanced. My backup option for CS in VIT Vellore/Chennai, or NIT Trichy, but i preferred IIT over the other colleges.

Since its a relatively newer IIT, there are significantly lesser number of students as compared to other older IITs. This allows students to have better chances in mingling with professors and gaining better opportunities. The exam and grade structure depends entirely on the professor handling the course. The course curriculum is updated constantly to ensure up to date education.

Many cafeterias and canteens are open 24/7. You can find people roaming in the campus any time of the day, no restrictions for hostel either. The canteen and the sports complex is a common hangout place and is also a good place for birthday and new year parties.
