- The best things about IIT Kharagpur is that it is the biggest IIT so the campus is so huge. It's fun to travel in the campus
- Our college encourage us do extra-curriculars. You can do any anything you want like any sports, dancing, comedy, startups, etc. Institute will provide you all the facilities you need
- Labs are top-notch. You could do any reasearch you want in any field you are interested in.
Dislikes
- This year the institute has increased the minimum attendance from 75% to 80%. So you can't even bunk any lecture
- The gender in our institute is 4:1. But don't know why but it feels like something 6:1. In my opinion the female quota in IITs should be increased.
- People expect that in IITs the mess is like some restaurant level but its just a myth. The mess food is that bad but it's still average.
Course Curriculum Overview
The courses are very varse and dives deep into that topic. For core courses the curriculum is very compressive and also teaches the real world applications very well. But for course related to tech and IT there needs improvement as the courses have become outdated in the present scenario. They need to teach real world applications for it. For the exams there it's much load even if you haven't studied whole semester you could score decent enough by studying 1-2 weeks before exam which a very good thing because in other time you could focus on your other extracurriculars and club activities. As I said there are only two exams in a semester, but some faculties take class tests some times.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tution fee for one semester is 1 lakh rupees which makes 2 lakh rupees yearly and hostel and mess fees are separate. But for economically weaker students there is concession in fees. If student's annual family income is between 1 lakh to 5 lakh then the fee for him/ her will 33% of original fees which 33k per semester. If a student's family income is below 1 lakh then 100% fees are deducted from original.
Campus Life
IIT Kharagpur has one of the best campus life in whole India. There are so so many clubs and societies in the campus, you could think of anything and there is society for it, if not then institute will provide you funds so you could such society. Literally from buisness to cooking there is very type of society. These clubs and societies organise events very frequently, there will always be a event every week. Regarding sports you could choose any sport you like for NSO from table tennis to swimming any sports, institute will assign you best coaches also. There are always fests occuring in the campus, the biggest fest in IIT Kharagpur is Spring Fest which is cultural fest of our institute in which many big celebrities are invited. Also there is sports fest SHAURYA and tech fest KSHITIJ. Also there are festival celebrated in the campus like on diwali 'Illumination' is celebrated and Ganesh chaturthi is also celebrated with enthusiasm. Regarding library IIT Kharagpur has biggest library.
Admission
I am currently happy that I got this institute and this course. And the time I was alloted seat at IIT KGP aerospace I was sad because I wanted IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay but now I don't have any regret and I am happy with what I got. I also applied for IIT Bombay metallurgy and IIT Delhi Production and industrial engineering but for both I missed the seat by very very few ranks. But now I think it's better that I got IIT Kharagpur aerospace compared to other two because even though the IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi may be little higher than Kharagpur but the department I was getting at those two were not good enough. I like aerospace and so much interest in it compared to other two. The admission process for IIT Kharagpur is simple it's just that u are score good enough in jee advanced and clear the cutoff for the branch u want.
Faculty
Here all the faculties are very friendly and approachable. If you have any doubt regarding the course you could just ask them after the lecture or email them, they are always happy to clear our doubts. The faculty which I liked the most is our mechanics faculty, the professor teach us the basic mechanics and he is very good at teaching it. Also some are faculties are very very strict about the attendance and few are very chill about the attendance. Regarding the exams every semester you will have 4-5 subjects and 2 labs. For every subject there will two exams in that semester namely midsem and endsem. Midsem will carry 30% of total marks and endsem will carry 50%. And for the remaining 20% it depends on the faculty.
