Course Curriculum Overview

3

The course curriculum for my course is structured to be engaging, with most media papers like Print Media, AV Production, Photography, Software etc being practical and interesting while Psychology papers can be more theoretical, but lab classes like experimental psychology also exist. There are also a lot of subjectively useless papers like Understanding India and Service Learning, which take a lot of time and energy for not much output.

Internships Opportunities

3

Internships are communicated as and when they come to the department. Companies like Walt Disney, De Shaw, and Goldman Sachs do come looking for interns, and take in select few people. For the mandatory internships, if a student is unable to find one himself/herself, the department helps out with collaborations with firms like the Deccan Herald. Stipends vary from Unpaid to 60k per month.

Placement Experience

2

For my exact department, campus placements for undergraduate students isn't great, but thats a concern for any college in Media Studies. Companies like Accenture and Bosch do come for roles like HR or Corporate Communications though, and with how the University teaches, employability is pretty high off campus, with students using their network built during their internships done in their earlier years to land a job. Starting salaries vary depending on the role and company, but start from around 3-4 LPA. Im currently into UI/UX, looking for an internship so I can start working once i graduate.

Fees and Financial Aid

Year1-3: Karnataka: 95,000, Other States: 1,15,000, NRI: 2,10,000, Foreign Nationals: 2500-3000 USD Year 4: Karnataka: 1,10,000, Other States: 1,45,000, NRI: 2,80,000, Foreign Nationals: 3000-4000 USD Fees have increased 2024 onwards Multiple merit and need based scholarships available. Merit based ones are awarded on the basis of entrance exam scores and other school exam scores for first years, and then on a year-to-year performance basis every successive year. Needy students need to apply for need based scholarships. The Alumni Association also helps needy students, details of which can be found on the website

Campus Life

4

Campus life is vibrant and quite satisfying. There are a million different clubs catering to everything, and there is something for everyone's niche. There have been upgrades on campus, witha newly opened cafeteria in Birds Park and ongoing renovations to the tennis and basketball courts. There aren't fests with celebrities and stuff coming like DU, the biggest events here are Darpan and Blossoms, along with Ethnic Day/Bhasha Utsav. There are a lot of sports endorsed by the University, including Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, etc. Almost all clubs here are student run, with an assigned faculty co-ordinator. Some of them also give out extra credits to add to your reports. There are 2 libraries, the Knowledge Centre with 4 floors, and UG library with 2 floors, with an ample supply of academic and non-academic materials. You also get access to a well stocked online library.

Admission

I applied to multiple other colleges, like DCAC, St. Xaviers Mumbai, KC Mumbai, Symbiosis Pune, and Manipal amongst others. Colleges in Delhi University are mostly female only for media, or restrict you to journalism. From my research, colleges in Mumbai tend to focus more on preparing you to work in the Mumbai industry, and I wanted a more diverse perspective and some more support and guidance than they provide. Symbiosis and Manipal turned out to be too expensive, but Christ had a better balance of campus and academics anyways. The admission process includes 2 stages, an entrance test (Christ University Entrance Test, aka CUET), and then an interview round. Basic eligibility requirements like a pass in the board exams. Cutoffs for CUET are never released, though the interviews can be a bit daunting if you are a first timer or lack a bit of confidence, but its nothing uncrackable.

Faculty

2.5

The faculty in the Media Department has seen a downgrade recently, with good professors who were confident in what they taught and could connect with the students (Geeta ma'am, Nayan sir, and soon Kailash sir) leaving for better opportunities, and the new faculty (Bhavana ma'am, Kumaraswamy sir, etc) being inept at handling the class and delivering passionate lectures. For exam based papers, there are 2 big assignments (CIA 1 and CIA 3) and 2 written exams (CIA 2/MIDSEM and ENDSEM). For Submission based courses, there are no written exams, only submissions for all 3 CIAs and the Endsem. Moderate Difficulty, not a lot of failures, although there are hefty fines if you fail in all 3 CIAs combined (10%of your course fee) to repeat.

Interview Experience

4.5

The first step was an MCQ entrance test, which is segmented according to your course. A General Aptitude Section, an English section, and a domain section. The test is pretty easy to crack. Once you pass you are called to an interview, where they test your stress handling abilities. You may get a few questions regarding your domain, but they also consider if you aren't from that specific background, in which case they might ask why do you want to pursue this course then. They also ask for a Micro Presentation, in which you will basically be assigned a topic of the interviewer's choice, and you have to speak nonstop on it for about a minute. Prep for the Entrance was the same as for other entrances like the Xaviers exam and CUET(the Common University Entrance Test), and I just researched the University and solidified my motives to join for the interview, trusting my knowledge for the rest.

Other Applied Colleges

St. Xavier's College | Bachelor of Mass Media [B.M.M.]

Too focused on the Mumbai industry, Better environment at Christ,

Manipal Academy of Higher Education - [MAHE] | Bachelor of Arts [BA] (Media and Communication)

Too expensive, not enough notable alumni

Placement Experience:

The campus placement is very good and many top companies come to the interview. Many students get job offers with a very good package. Compared to other colleges the percentage of placement is more in this college. The college also offers post-graduation studies if you don't want to perceive higher studies.

Remarks:

The only positive thing about this South East Asian College of Arts, Commerce and Science is that you will not feel like a stranger here. Everyone is very supportive and they won't let you feel nervous also. The negative thing is they don't allow you to go and have food during lunch hrs and moreover they take 2 hrs of Tuition Classes which I personally think is a totally waste of time. The Principal here is also rude.

Our infrastructure is a bit small and there is a need for more rooms. There is a requirement for moot Court rooms and a bigger and spacious library. We need a bigger hostel and more ventilated classrooms.
