Course Curriculum Overview
I was prior interested in Automobiles, Aeroplanes and Locomotives, which inspired me to choose this course. Though it was difficult at times to understand few concepts but overall it gained me much knowledge.
Internships Opportunities
1. I got an opportunity to do Vocational training at SAIL Durgapur Steel Plant, which was given by our department, during summer break after 3rd year. 2. I got an offcampus opportunity for Project intern at Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Ltd, during summer break after 3rd year, continue after the previous one. 3. I got an oncampus opportunity for Neev Internship at Flipkart, during the 8th semester. 4. I got another oncampus international pportunity at Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel, based out of Oman, as a full time employee there.
Placement Experience
NIT Durgapur holds a strong record of campus placements and will continue to do. Average package last year was around 8.5 LPA. Many PSU, Big 4 and IT companies take part in the recruitment process and students are fairly selected.
Fees and Financial Aid
For SC/ST/OBC, fees were 17500/semester for tuition, 18000/semester for Hostel (inc. Room, Mess, Services, etc.) For General, fees vary from 74000/semester to 17500/semester based on Parents' income category for tution, 18000/semester for Hostel (inc. Room, Mess, Services, etc.)
Campus Life
Overall campus life for me was exciting, encouraging and helped me to socialize with different people from all parts of India. Seniors were like guardians and juniors were more like friends and always stood for support.
Hostel Facilities
1st year hostel (Hall 14) is well furnished and in good condition as it was built recently, but the mess is handled by a private vendor, due to which food quality may not be as expected for some. Whereas later during pre-final and final years, we get Hall-2 and Hall-1, which were built in 1960s and not much upgrades on them were done since then except the electricals. But the mess in those older halls are way better than those handled by private vendors.
Admission
I got admitted in NIT Durgapur, Mechanical Engineering department via JEE Mains. I was selected in CSAB counselling and home state quota was applicable for me as I completed my Secondary and Higher Secondary from West Bengal itself.
Faculty
Faculty to Student ratio varies between 1:8-1:20. For Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering departments it was the highest as number of students were greater than 160. Though all the faculty members and professors are highly qualified and knowledgeable, and guide well throughout the path of college life.
