What Students Say
Likes
- Beautiful, lush green and pollution free campus
- 2100 acres of land in the college, great place to go out on cycling trips with friends to great locations
- Everyone treated as a family within our halls, and society members are very closely knit together
Dislikes
- Large campus sometimes makes trips from hall to classes a bit too long
- Climate is rainy most of the time for many months, and also really high humidity.
- Sometimes too big of a class for professors to be able to clear our doubts
Course Curriculum Overview
I was interested in the Mechanical-like curriculum Manufacturing provided, with a little bit of a touch of probability and maths. Academic curricula are regularly improved within the campus, such as recent changes making AI and machine learning courses compulsory in the curricula. Class tests are held twice per semester, accounting for around 20% of the exam scores. Mid-semester and End-semester exams carry over the rest of the grade. The curriculum gives a basic idea of the engineering field and interning under professors can give more detailed studies on a specific topic. The exams are generally considered easy as most questions come within the book recommended or problem sets.
Internships Opportunities
Internship offers are managed by the Career Development Center here at IIT KGP. You need to create a certain resume based on where you want to do your internships. Interships can range from a stipend of 30k to even 2 lakh per month, mostly depending on your skills. There is also ample opportunity to avail internships in foreign universities as a research based internships, which provides great exposure. These internships generally last the Summer Break after 3rd year, but you can extend it applying the Semester- Away program, which allows you to skip a semester and spread its courses over the other semesters.
Placement Experience
Campus placements generally start around 4th year. Around 150 companies arrive for campus placements, but few companies have restrictions, such as only allowing circuital branches. These companies specifically pay a lot. In circuital branches around 80 - 85% of students are getting placed, and non-circuital branches have a placement rate of around 65%. The highest package is generally international, going for around 2.5 crores. The average package for CSE goes for around 35 LPA, but for non-circuital branches, goes for around 15 LPA. There is also a huge opportunity to head for an MBA or Civil services here, and also many research proficiencies can be obtained. The con I would like to provide is that for non-circuital branches, core placements are really difficult considering how fewer core companies actually arrive for placements
Fees and Financial Aid
The total year-wise pay will be around 3 lakh rupees, 1.5 lakh per semester. Looking at per semester: Refundable fees: 6000 One time fee: 5700 Tuition fee: 1 lakh Other amenities: 5750 Mess and hall accommodation: 28855 The tuition fee is reduced to 1/3rd, or 33335 if income is below 5 lakh. Tuition fee is fully waivered if income is below 1 lakh or belonging to SC/ST/PWD reservations The fees don't really change too much over the years.
Campus Life
The two most important fests here at IIT KGP are the Spring fest, around the month of January, and Kshitij, Asia's largest techno-management fest, occurring around the same time. There are immensely great sporting facilities available here on campus. We have an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an Olympic-sized stadium with tracks for athletes. Many number of courts are also provided for badminton, lawn tennis, squash, football, and basketball. Water polo is also taught and encouraged here. Inter IIT competition of sports is taken very seriously and the sporting facilities aid the players a lot. There are more than 50 clubs and societies people can join here, who have certain niche interests or are interested in learning something new. These societies not only teach great communication skills and their niche but also give a great opportunity to interact with seniors in certain fields and earn great "fundae" or tips
Hostel Facilities
Hostels, or so-called Halls of Residences, here are very great. There are around 21 halls here. Most of the freshers are accommodated in the LBS Hall of Residence. Here it's a triple sharing room, but very spacious, and an attached balcony. There is a desk, chair, bed, and shelf provided. Anything broken or needing service in the room is fixed within 24 hours. The mess food is pretty great. They provide non-veg food 4 days a week, including fish, chicken, and even biryani on Sundays. Breakfast always has an option of having bread and butter jam. Chapati is provided here in the famous Chapati-making machines here at IIT KGP. Hostels are pretty affordable here, and after the first year, you get allocated to a different hostel, which is permanent until you leave campus. This new hall generally is double sharing, but you get allocated to a single sharing room in your 3rd or 4th year.
Admission
The course requires you to have 75% in your 12th boards, qualified JEE Mains and JEE Advanced, and the JEE Advanced cutoff went upto around 6000 rank for this specific course. The reservation must be applied beforehand and certain proof documents are asked during the JOSAA counselling period. All admission forms and such can be found on the JOSAA counseling website in due time. JEE Mains occurs twice a year, in January and in April. JEE Advanced occurs once per year, generally around the end of month of May.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio is around 1:20. However, certain classes especially in the first year are too filled up, with around 200 students, making it difficult to ask doubts within the class timings. The lecturers here are really well qualified, all being PhD scholars in their respective fields of expertise and always willing to respond to emails within 24 hours. It's easy to approach faculty advisors by virtue of mail. Teaching assistants are also generally M.Tech students or PhD Scholars and are very friendly and helpful in tutorial classes.
