Entrance Preview

For Civil Engineering NIT Silchar is one of the best colleges in India. The Department is strengthened by the very knowledgeable professors who are willing to teach and the best in class labs. The style of education used to very unique, where we as students were taken out on the field instead of being enclosed in classrooms all the time.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

Terrific course curriculum. It included all what we need to understand Civil Engineering spanning across all the sections - Geology, Structural Design, Roads and Transportation and Water Engineering. In addition to the traditional courses, the department also provides for an Unix Lab and encourages the students to innovate and start thinking about bringing Automation at a very early stage.

Internships Opportunities

Not that I am aware of. During our time, it did not, but maybe currently things might have changed because of some the alumnus run their own organizations which might give the students some opportunity.

Placement Experience

5

The placement & job opportunities are awesome owing to the effort put in by the placement cell. It has transformed over time. During our time, their were challenges with regards to Transport, however now things have changed. Each student mostly are offered more than one job and they usually pick one of them.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Absolutely Feasible. It also addresses the needs of the different income groups. The annual admission fee is below INR 50,000 and depending on the fact if the income of the family is lower, it might be as low as approximately INR 14,000 with nothing to be paid during the time of admission.

Fees and Financial Aid

The College doesn't provide any scholarship, although students may avail from other sources in which student welfare department provide full support. Getting a loan is really easy here and the college authorities will also give full support. The is a SBI branch inside the college premises which makes the process of availing loan easier.

Alumni/Alumna

There is a registered Alumni Association. Alumni are the foremost important asset that a institution can give to its students. They are the reflection of the potential and the credibility of the institution. It would be a difficult task to shape a future without the guidance and encouragement of real experience that an alumni can give.NIT Silchar has taken the initiative to provide its students an opportunity to meet their alumni and hence an alumni association is formed.

Exam Structure

Each semester had exam which spanned over a period of 2-4 weeks. There were class tests which got added to the sessional score and they used to happen mostly once in 2 months. Instead of testing people and what they have learnt based on some routine exams, more focus was given on discussions and interactions so that the professors could understand where the gaps were and fill in those voids.

Admission

Through an entrance exam I was selected. A merit list was put up in the newspapers and we went for the final admission. A medical test was also conducted along with the other educational certificates were also done. The payment of fees and the allotment of hostels were done in the college campus and took no time as the process is quite efficient.

I do feel that the college boasts of the best professors in Civil Department. They are usually invited by IITs for presenting papers and conducting some adhoc sessions. Some of the professors continue to be part of this institution because of their desire to educate the students well as they were alumnus from the same institution. I know of a professor who had given up on the job opportunities that he had got during his education tenure just because he dreamt of making his alma matter became one of the best in the country, a dream which I know he shared with all his colleagues and it feels great when I hear that currently Civil Engineering Department of NIT Silchar is one of the best, if not the best, in the country.

Placements are not really good in our college, it is more of a research institute so it mainly focuses on PhD as PhD strength is good. Higher education is more prefered here but placement scenario is also good

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is very relevant and is different for different branches according to their needs. I was interested in civil engineering and chose the course and find the curriculum intersting and relevant for me . The curriculum offers subject which are important for real world applications, like in civil engineering it's offers subjects like building construction, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, material testing, serving, etc. The course curriculum is very good but the teaching methods needs improvement like more digitalization . The exams frequency and timings are neither too late nor too early, they are perfectly planned and executed.

Course Curriculum Overview:

There exists a good teaching staff that's why the course is very easy to understand also teachers give us good examples also do practicals so that's students understand the course easily . I see that there exist a low no of equipments in practical lab compare to it's students ratio so if they have a good no of equipments then all students get equipment to do experiment without any waste of time . Time is good as compare to marks and the first 30 marks are beginner level the other 40 marks are intermediate level and the remaining 30 Marks are advanced level questions in a question paper for the students they published.

Placement Experience:

The placement scenario is quite good, with several reputed companies like General Electric, Power Grid Corporation of India, Goldman Sachs, among others recruiting 94 percent of the students in the college. The placement takes place in three rounds, one testing one's aptitude, followed by an hour round, finally leading on to a technical round. Mock interview and job cracking sessions are organized regularly, both by the departments, and also the Training and Placement Cell, to prepare students for the interviews and examinations going forward. The Training and Placement Cell also provides internship opportunities at the end of third year for the students, based on their aptitude and abilities

I have mostly positive remarks about college except for the fact that the college is situated really far from mainstream north India. Train connectivity is not that strong to rest of country. But despite that the college is extremely good in the sense of learning, meeting new innovative minds, and of course placements and jobs.
