- I disliked the parking services in the college as it was really hard to get a spot to park vehicles due to overcrowding.
- I disliked that some of the infrastructure in some classrooms were a little too old and weak. It is far beyond the time for repair.
Course Curriculum Overview
There are many aspects of the curriculum that infulenced my decision to choose BA English Literature in St. Berchmans College. Their syllabus is far more challenging and interesting than what other colleges and universities offer in Kerala. The examinations and overall assessment of projects and grades are top-tier and is comparatively difficult to obtain. The course steadily provides good quality information and knowledge on English Litearture and readies the student to be more than qualified for further studies in English Literature or any related courses. The areas where they can improve in the course curriculum is through availing more optional courses such as various other language courses/philosophy related courses to be selected. Their teaching environment can also be improved by improving basic infrastructure in the classrooms such as airflow etc. They conduct their exams freequently and on time. The examinations are challenging but necessary for overall improvement in students
Internships Opportunities
While there were Internship opportunities available for several departments, they weren't available for English Literature students as we had to submit a dissertation on a topic we have reserached about. Many other departments availed internships to their students and only BA Vocational English students were availed internship opportunities. I completed a dissertation on the Existential Angst and Posthuman Condition as depicted in the film Blade Runner 2049.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee in St. Berchmans College has remained the same over the past few years and there haven't been any significant change in their tuition fees. The complete cost of my education is about 17,518 INR for six semesters. This information is available on the personalized student portal of the college. There are almost 27 government scholarships available to students such as the Post-Matric Scholarship for Minorities, Centre Sector Scholarship, State Merit Scholarship etc. Furthermore, there are 41 different scholarships that the college provides, including Dr K M Abraham Scholarship, Dr Kurialacherry Medal, Trivandrum Alumni Scholarship etc. Additionally, there are many department based scholarships that are exclusive to each departments. I have fulfilled duties as Photography Contest Coordinator during the department fest in March 2023.
Campus Life
There are constantly small festival-like programmes being held every month of the academic year. These are called 'Thanal-Koottams' / 'gatherings under the shade'. The English Department host their annual fests "Impressionz" and "Expressionz" simultaneously duringt the months of February-March every year. The library in St. Berchmans College is one of the largest college libraries in Kerala. It is a huge and spacious library with marvellous collection of books. They also have implemented ID card tap-in system whereby a person cannot enter the library without their ID Card. There are many sports and extracurricular acticvities available in the campus. There is an official basketball team, a volleyball team, a football team and atheltics team for the college. Moreover, every departments also do conduct department-wise cricket and football tournaments once or twice ayear. There are many student-run groups such as the CSI etc. as well as political groups like the SFI, KSU etc present there
Admission
St Berchman's College is known for it's quality of education and teaching. They only select the best candidates that perform well in their interviews and have good grades/potential. All of the candidates are selected on the basis of merit, while there are reserved seats for SC & ST. The application form is easily available on their website depending on the programme that we choose. We get a detailed overview on what the course is, how it progresses, the syllabus and even previous years' question papers in one single pdf for each respective course. The application fee was only minimal, probably around 100-500 INR. Reservation categories get a huge discount in their tuition fees. They are pretty strict about their exams and is far more difficult and challenging compared to other colleges and universities in Kerala. The only place they could improve in their admissions process is to be little lenient in the interview process. The interview is the hardest part during admissions process.
Other Applied Colleges
St. Thomas College | Bachelor of Arts [BA] (History)
I was more interested in learning English Literature than History and my primary choice was always St Berchmans College.
