Remarks

The weather is fantastic and the views are amazing and that is probably the best thing about this college. You get to live some of the best adventures, life moments and collect experiences which you would look back on years after you graduate and you would miss this place. The college is good for those who have a habit of self study and are willing to work hard and know their stuff well. The industrial exposure is pretty less.Extra curricular activities are lacking.Winters are harsh. The geographical location is one major problem as well a boon. The college as pros and cons ,its you who decide if its good or bad for you

Entrance Preview

I wrote Jee mains exam to get into National Institute of Technology, Srinagar. I was in quota preparing for jee mains and advanced and I did not do well in the jee advance exam. There was no interview for the admission, just the jee mains rank was considered for admission.I am currently pursuing chemical engineering in my final year of B.Tech.I chose chemical engineering because I had only 2 courses in my mind mechanical and chemical which are pretty similar.I did not get a seat in mechanical being from general category which is why I chose chemical engineering.

Course Curriculum Overview

3

The main focus of the course was on academics. There was not much exposure or events going on although we did have some workshops and seminars. The students would do rote learning and vomit it in the exam. The students whose English was good enough and had a pleasing handwriting would usually get the highest marks in the class, not to mention some students who would copy in the exam from mobile phones or appease the teacher to get more marks than he/she would usually get.The focus on projects and internships are least. The teachers are inexperienced and possess bad communication skills. Some of the teachers could not speak English properly which is why many would face problems because we have a student community who are from diverse background.Even the highly qualified teachers do not have that level of teaching with clarity like the IIT profs in nptel lectures. The maths department is the worse here. They would fail students even when they write correctly because of political differences or God knows what.In our final year it has been made compulsory to choose mathematics even when its an elective.I do not have any supplementary or backlogs, its just my opinion and what I have witnessed in this college.

Internships Opportunities

The college does not help in getting you an internship. It is you who connect with the alumni and the experienced faculties or seniors to get an internship. There is usually no stipend for the internships that you get because lets face it, its not an internship but a training. And the holidays are in winter an not in summer. So you do the training in winter and not in summer.

Placement Experience

2.5

The CSE branch has the best placements. Almost all of them get placed with handsome packages.2 years ago we had a record placement from CSE branch of about 72 lac .The mechanical and electrical and ECE,IT branches also have decent placements. The branches who do not have good placements are CIVIL,CHEMICAL,METTALURGY AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING(which is going to be abandoned from 2018).The average package is around 4-5 lacks. Some students do get around 10 lacks or above per annum but the numbers are few.

College Events

3.5

The technical and cultural fests that are organized happens once in a year. However last year,in 2016 the college remained closed for a long time due to disturbances in the Kashmir valley. In 2017 also the fests have not been organized as the college was busy in covering for the academic loss in 2016.The college fests are not that grand but everything takes place like events, workshops, lectures, seminars. However, the college still lacks in cultural events as the local people are not fond of Hindi Bollywood music and they do not like to sing and dance, may be because their religion restricts them. However, they do not stop the outside students, from every nook and corner of the country, to celebrate.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure ,just as for any other NITs or IITs, are similar.SC/ST do not require to pay any tuition fee and Ob Cs pay around Rs 38750 and generals pay Rs 39750 for 1 semester. The mess fee is Rs 15000 for autumn semester and around Rs 6000 for spring semester. The mess fee is same for every castes. This is the fee structure of our batch.I am not sure about the junior batches but I think they need to pay more than us.As per the mess fee, the quality is not good at all.Let me tell you an unknown fact, the mess of 1st,2nd and 3rd year produces less food than that they are required to produce which is why if you go late to the mess, chances are that you would not get proper food or any food at all. These are private mess and run by contractors. They sell the remaining food raw material to a college canteen inside the campus named as "gasha canteen" which sell foods at expensive rates and rumors are there that the owner of this canteen is the reason why there are not much good options inside the campus at the moment. He pays to some of the college authorities to ensure that his canteen is the primary food option inside the campus.

Fees and Financial Aid

No the college does not provide any scholarships or loan from their side.Yes the college can help in getting loan.I have not taken any loan so I am not much aware about it ,but i do know that the college helps in getting you a loan.

Campus Life

4.5

The sports activities are held time to time.I would say the college lack in terms of exposure and extra curricular.Yes I did get opportunity to explore my inner talent. There are facilities for everything but no one to guide.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Yes i reside in the hostel and all outsiders reside in the hostel. The ones who do not reside in the hostel are the kashmiri people who are day scholars. The condition of hostel rooms were poor about 1 or 2 years ago.But now it has improved a lot. There are WiFi in almost all hostels. One of the hostels of the 4 th year has LAN connection in every single room.In 1st year , during our time we used to stay 4 or 5 in a room.In second year we had to stay 4 in a room.In third year, depending on the rooms we had to stay 2 or 3 in a room.In 4 th year the hostels are given on the basis of your CGPA and a cutoff is decided and people above that cutoff get the hostel where there are single rooms for every single student with high speed LAN connection. The other hostel is DAL hostel where you have to stay 2 in a room. The rooms are in good condition and have high speed wifi available.

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni did not have a good network before but that is changing and the alumni meet takes place every year. They discuss ideas and ways to improve the college, student community, campus and job opportunities etc.The alumni does help in getting internships or a job.

Exam Structure

The mid sem exams are usually happen by taking 2 subjects in one day.So if you have 6 subjects, your exams are going to end in 3 days. This happens after about 1.5 months after the semester begins. The end semester exams or major exams happen with 1 subject on day and then a gap o 1 day and then 1 subject and this continues so on.The culture is chill during the major exams. However, its a tense atmosphere during the mid term.

Faculty

3

Some branches have highly qualified and great teachers, for instance the CSE and electrical department have very good teachers and so are mechanical and Civil.I would talk about the faculties in my department. We have 4 faculties who have PHD. The rest of them are either M.Tech from some IIT or pursuing PHD. The problem is not knowledge, the problem lies in quality of teaching and how well they communicate and grab the student's attention. They lack in communication skills.

Our institute has a placement call, and it helps the students acquire jobs in the industry. Many top companies like Wipro, L and T, and NVIDIA visit our campus, and it provides jobs in every field from Information Tech. to Material-related jobs. Here job opportunities are for every branch. Recently in one day 30-40 students got placed at an average package of 10 LPA. Most of the opportunities are for CSE and IT students as it goes for every institute and some companies like GAIL, and IOCL. BARC gives internship opportunities to chemical branches too. The core branches like Electrical and Mechanical also perform well in the placements. From the 7th semester, placement opportunities are given to the students. Highest package 40 LPA and median package 10 LPA.
