Remarks
The college management needs to focus on below mention points, 1. To increase the number of quality faculties 2. Especially for electronics, need to build the relationship with industry and update courses based on that. Keep this as a regular practice. 3. Invest in building state of the art labs with people who know how to use it in the best way. 4. Bring industry standard tools and software/ hardware infrastructure to keep the pace with industry. 5. Also, take a technical initiative to build India a strong country in the field of technology.
Entrance Preview
I took GATE-2013 exam for the M.Tech admission. I scored 56.33/100 and AIR was 1594. I was getting admission into some other NITs but I choose it because it was the only one college among those NITs which has course VLSI & Embedded Systems. I was equally interested in Embedded Systems so I choose this college.
Course Curriculum Overview
I would give 6.5/10 to the course curriculum. The curriculum needs to more focused to the specialization (There were some useless subjects for VLSI engineer only because of lack of faculties). Add more courses, labs and projects suitable for VLSI and Embedded Systems like low power VLSI, SoC Architectures. Also the course of Embedded systems needs improvement.
Internships Opportunities
The best part is Intel is comes for a 1 year internship program. It provides 27K/month (Which was 22K/month at my time). Texas instrument has also came in the past but does not come always.
Placement Experience
I would give 7/10. If you get the internship to Intel or any other company then there is high chance of getting converted to full-time. Below are the details of recent year placement record of M.Tech VLSI & Embedded systems. 1. Intel - 11.5 lpa (Core company) 2. Infosys - 3.2 lpa (IT company) 3. Rishabh Instruments - 4.1 lpa (Core electronics Company) 4. Texas instrument - 14 lpa (Core company) 5. e-infochip - 3.6 lpa (Core Company) 6. TCS - 3.6 lpa (Core Company) 7. Aakash Education - 6.5 lpa (JEE coaching) 8. Allan institute - 7 lpa (JEE coaching) Above is the list of companies where there is a direct chance of placement. But many of my friends have been to different companies like NVIDIA, Qualcomm through off campus interviews.
College Events
Below are the list of events celebrated in the college 1. Sparsh - is the biggest event of the year, it includes technical, cultural and management programs together. It is a 1 week long program. It includes technical events like robo races, robo fights, coding contests, 2-3 days long technical workshops, it welcomes participants from other colleges. In the cultural front it has singing, dancing competition. 2. Mind-bend - Live concert, every year 1 day event. In this event they call some famous band (usually from india) to perform. It is really enjoyable event. 3. Cricket Tournament - 1 to 2 week long night cricket tournament. 4. All the cultural festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Ram-navmi, Nav-ratri are celebrated separately on the different hostels. 5. All the hostels have their annual Hostel day celebrations which includes a cultural program followed by dinner. 6. Many technical conferences and workshops through out the year. 7. Technical conference by IEEE. 8. Technical event by IEEE which includes, demos, posters, research paper presentations.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fees have been raised by 100% from year 2015. The recent fee structure in given below. 1st sem - > 53000 2nd sem - > 35000 3rd sem - > 39000 4th sem - > 35000 Hostel Fees (latest numbers) 1st year (Sarabhai Bhavan Hostel - Hostel No. 7) 28300 (Includes 6 month of Mess fees) + 14000 (Mess fees of the last 6 months) 2nd year (Gajjar Bhavan Hostel) 33800 (Includes 6 month Mess fees) + 15500 (Mess fees of the last six month) Compare to other colleges in india, this is quite feasible bot expensive at all.
Fees and Financial Aid
For all the students who got admission using GATE are given scholarship of INR 12,000 per month from MHRM department. There is also a special relief in hostel fees for few students coming from economically poor background, In this first student needs to pay the fees but few students gets full or partial return of the fees, the decision is made by chief warden of the hostel. Students can also go for the regular loan provided by the banks, SVNIT has an SBI bank branch inside campus which has easy procedure for student loan.
Campus Life
The campus life is awesome. Gender ratio on campus is increasing year by year currently it is like 3 girls per 10 boys. You will find students from different regions of India leaving together. There is a waste level of diversity in the students like from technology projects, social awareness, sports freaks, cultural program performers. The culture is quite open compared to all the other colleges of Gujarat. I have never heard of any case of ragging based on religion or race. Politics is surely there especially in the election for student leader. When politics comes it also brings race with it by default but it is not extended anywhere else. SVNIT is in the posh area of Surat so it is very natural that students are partying, going for outings, going for movies and all. There is no any gender-specific rule other than the girls need to be inside campus before 9/9.30 and boys can come by 11. As it is NIT people from different economic background comes and lives together. But I haven't seen any differentiation done based on economic status.
Hostel Facilities
SVNIT Surat have one of the best hostels. Hostels have really good rooms and other equipment. All first year PG students are staying in Sarabhai bhavan hostel and it has enough capacity to include all 1st year PG students. Latest fees are mentioned below. 28300 (Includes 6 month of Mess fees) + 14000 (Mess fees of the last 6 months) In this hostel 1 room will be shared by two people. The room is quite large and below are the facilities it have. 1. A really big balcony 2. Good quality beds 3. Good Quality Cupboards 4. Study Tables 5. All other misc facilities for easy functioning. It has common bathroom and toilets, highly cleaned and well maintained. Also it has other facilities like 1. Sports equipment 2. TV room 3. Night Canteen 4. Announcement System 5. Conference rooms 6. Indoor games Similar things are there in 2nd year hostel Gajjar Bhavan with only difference is it is single sharing thus the cost is high. Cost is mentioned below. 33800 (Includes 6 month Mess fees) + 15500 (Mess fees of the last six month)
Alumni/Alumna
It has really good alumni network for all the branches. Also, it has Alumni network based on different cities. Still today I am part of Bengaluru based the alumni network. This network is quite helpful, it helps in organizing events like Sparsh to bringing new placement and internship opportunities. The campus also has a alumni cell where active members come there yearly twice or thrice for meetings. My Alumni has created a benguluru chapter where we meet once quarterly, it provides a great opportunity for network building.
Exam Structure
Labs were really good part of the learning. The infrastructure could have been better by installing industry standard tools. Labs schedules were hectic, we have spent whole night doing projects and assignments but it is the real fun. There are only two written exams are there 1. Mid term and 2. End term. There are also practical exams and viva for each labs.
Admission
Below are the steps of the admission procedure. 1. Registration on the website http://ccmt.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx (The admission procedure is centralize) 2. Read and understand the latest admission procedure explained at the CCMT website. 3. While registration process, enter the institutes and courses in the correct priority order. 4. Check the seat allotment at the end of different rounds. 5. Once you get the option of your choice confirm it by following require procedure on the website and depositing fees to the collage (Need to submit DD)
Faculty
I would give 6/10. For M.tech in VLSI & Embedded system collage have only 4 faculties, other faculties are from communication background. To cover the breadth of the field this number is too less. The Quality of the faculties of VLSI is quite good. They have good knowledge of the concepts but I really feel they should get engage to the industry to update their self with the latest trends. The quality of the faculties of communication is pathetic, they are the worst teachers I have ever seen.
