Entrance Preview
I took PGCET entrance examination for M.Tech, scored 48 marks out of 100. The college and course selection for M.Tech was completely online where candidates are required to submit a priority list containing the opted courses in various colleges. The seats available were allotted to students rank wise with their preferred or first choice. In my selection of courses, Dayananda Sagar College was in top list as I heard lot about teaching, facilities and placements when I was in BE. My friends who studied BE in Dayananda Sagar all got placed in good companies with excellent packages. So I selected this college and applied for electronics related courses. I had keen interest for Biomedical Signal Processing because I wanted to do research on brain functioning and hence selected this course. There are very few colleges offering Biomedical Signal Processing & Instrumentation course.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum for Biomedical course was provided by Visvesvaraya Technological University(VTU), where new modern syllabus was introduced for every two years, Our batch had new syllabus in year 2013. The course was well organised with all details right from prescribed testbooks to the contents/topics of each subject along with the time required to cover the syllabus. The M.Tech Course(2 years) for Biomedical Signal was of 4 semesters where 4th semester was dedicated for M.Tech Thesis. Each semester had upto 5 subjects including an elective. Every candidate was expected to give a seminar for all the subjects through powerpoint presentation. All internal assessments and seminar marks were included along with external marks. Focus on Thesis started off in late 1st semester and allocation of groups. Candidates had to start their research very early in third semester based on the complexity of the thesis. Guides helped the candidates throughout their research right selection of thesis to evaluation of the results in the research.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, Internships were provided to candidates through interview process. For Biomedical course, companies like GE, Philips HealthCare and few others gave interview opportunity for students. The stipend varies from 10000rs to 30000rs per month. The selected candidates would have a wonderful experience to start off and get trained in R&D, on-job training. Based on the candidates performance, they will be evaluated for full-time role in the company. All candidates may not get internship opportunity. it depends on the group thay opted for carrying out the thesis. Candidates who did not get internship opportunity who perform research in the Research Center at college itself.
Placement Experience
Placements & Job opportunities are excellent in Dayananda Sagar College, where every year more than 100 companies come to college for recruiting candidates. There are frequent recruitment drives for various branches nearly from 2nd half of the course. The candidates are notified from time to time on email regarding the company and recruitment drive details. All big, small, core companies like Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Oracle, L&T Infotech, Accenture, Tech Mahindra, IBM, Wipro, Amazon, Unisys, JP Morgan and lot more.. The lowest cut-off for students starts from 55% to attend the drive depending on company. For Biomedical they were opportunities through internship. Companies like Biocon, Lifecell, Cerner offered job opportunity to BE students while internship opportunity for MTech candidates. Every company offered very good package ranging between 3.0 LPA to 20 LPA. Most of the companies offered approx. package 3.5-5LPA, while core companies offered upto 10LPA. Some candidates get opportunity to get placed in top-core companies which offered more than 12LPA and their eligibility cut-off was also high.
College Events
Dayananda Sagar college is excellent for placements as well as events for students. Throughout the year, there will be lots of events- educational, cultural, management, technical, entertainment and lot more. The college brings new opportunities for students to outstand in several competitions like technical hackathon, testing coding skills. The college encourages everyone to participate in fests and showcase their talent. Usually there would be 3-day fests which invites students from different colleges all over and participate in exhibiting their skills in painting, essay-writing, clay modelling, craft, gaming, coding and treasure hunt. There is always active participation with lots of entusiasm and zeal. Special one day events like ethnic day, outing and informational/ industrial visits do happen all the time.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structures may be varying slightly every year. Vijaya Bank located just outside the college handles the fee payments for admission, examination and all others. The course fee is reasonable and affordable too. It costed approx. 80000 rs for M.Tech course(2013-2015) per year. The exam fees in each semester was about 1500rs.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college offered scolarship on various basis, while I know my classmate got scholarship for belonging to category.
Campus Life
Inside Dayananda Sagar college life is wonderful with lush green environment everywhere which brings a pleasant atmospere to students everytime refreshing when one enters the campus. Lots of facilities in and around the campus from basic drinking water to transportation, library to hi-fi auditorium. Library facilities are awesome with all departments-technical, non-technical, engineering, management and other books are all available. Students with ID tags are allowed to borrow books for about two weeks of time and then renew it if needed. Labs are equipped with required resources for the students to perform experiments in electronics labs, hi end configuration desktops are installed in most of the computer labs using latest version and different types of OS. The college has modern auditorium having a seating capacity of more than 1000 seats. Many stage acts and extra-curricular activities happen here. Also there is a mini theatre for special powerpoint presentations and playing movies in weekend. DSI college conducts different workshops from time to time based on subject level to industrial level. Language or domain specific like MATLAB, Robotics, Embedded, Biomedical workshops are conducted to encourage the students in pursuing modern practices and knowledge with fun. There are sports facilities like open ground for playing sports games-cricket, football, basketball court, squash court where my friend was regularly playing squash here, well equiped gym having membership facilities. About 3-4 cafetarias in the campus where two are big-spaced with all full menu providing good food. Many food items are tasty while few are okay. Other two for snacks & coffee is good for quick refreshments.
Hostel Facilities
The college hostels are very good with all the required basic facilities. There are two hostels-NRI hostel and non-NRI hostels. It was on sharing basis, where one room is alloted for 3-4 students. Since I used to travel from home, I am not much sure about hostel average rent. The hostel fees included mess food fees for hostel students. Many of my friends were quite satisfied with the comfort in the hostel while few felt it was expensive and stayed in nearby PG. It used to cost around 3000-8000rs or more per month on average.
Alumni/Alumna
Every year alumni are invited to many college events for encouraging the future of the students in Dayananda Sagar College and students get chance to interact well whenever they come back to the campus. Some college seniors have given many suggestions with respect to career path.
Exam Structure
All subjects total marks were approx. 800, where each subject was 150marks. External theory exams were of 100marks, while internal assessments were conducted for 50marks and shortened to 25marks equivalent. Rest of the marks included seminar, assignments and attendance. It was mandatory for the candidates to score atleast 50% of internal marks to attempt external examination. In externals also, subjectwise, the candidates must score min 50marks to be declared as pass in that subject. an overall 50% is required for a semester. There are labs twice in a week for different subjects where students were allowed to try out all the experiments listed in subject syllabus under Professor guidance. Labs usually were of 2-3 hours to finish 2 experiments in every week and all experiments were written in record with all the observed outputs. Submitting completed records was mandatory as marks were included for this along with internal assessment.
Admission
I got admission in Dayananda Sagar college through PGCET, where Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) started new system of allocating seats/courses to candidates. As soon as the PGCET results were announced, the KEA notified the dates on their website for candidate details verification & selection of courses and colleges based on candidates preference. The college and course selection was completely online where candidates are required to submit a priority list containing the offered courses in various colleges. The seats available were alloted to students rankwise with their prefered or first choice. I obtained 3396 rank, where I initially attended candidate detail verification process at KEA-Bangalore. For every candidate as per rank on alloted date & time, education details, Proof of ID, Proof of Address and related document verification was done. The complete process was done in orderly manner and unambiguous. After completing for all the candidates, then the list was released for the candidates to make a priority of the courses they want to opt for and submit it in KEA website. There was about 4 to 5 days time given for the candidates to make their own priority list. There were 2-3 rounds of list release where if a candidate is satisfied with the college in 1st round, then he/she would proceed with that for admission in college. A candidate who was not satisfied had to wait if any higher rank candidates would cancel their selection for some reason. I selected my course-Biomedical Signal Processing & Instrumentation in Dayananda Sagar College in first round itself. There was no need for me to wait for another round. I received my admission order for college with certain date to join college. I reported to college where I had to meet the Administrator Member in cabin for self introduction and formal talk. Then I proceeded to fill the application form and submitted all required education documents. After reaching the college, filling application, payment of fees & submitting documents went on smoothly in about 1-2 hours. I was asked to join the class right away.
Faculty
We had an awesome Head of Department(H.O.D) who was an expert who is dedicated for biomedical field and of extreme knowledge. Almost all Professors have in-depth knowledge of subject and followed their own way of teaching. Few used practical examples on white board, presentation, videos for certain topics. All Professors tried to cover the syllabus on time and one or two asked to attend extra classes if needed. Attendance was strict and everyone was expected to have not less then 75% where marks were considered for attendance also. one to few numerical problems were solved by Professors and rest were asked to be solved by students. Solution for assignments were given later. There was deduction in seminar marks if presented lately. In overall view, the Faculty were all good.
