Remarks

Overall the institute I ll rate one of the best in India. But they should increase faculty number and start collaborating with very good labs in India. The course structure should be such that a person should clear PhD entrance test.

Entrance Preview

I appeared combined biotech entrance conducted by JNU for admission to MSc Biotechnology in the year 2009. My rank was 64. This particular institute was known to be famous for research in biotechnology and also the institute has very good faculties. So i selected this institute for MSc.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Course curriculum was average. The curriculum could have been more PhD entrance preparation oriented. But the research infrastructure was good compared to other traditional universities. to conduct research each student was assigned one faculty and given 2 to 3 objectives. at the end of research one paper has to be submitted in a journal. So one of my abstarct was published in Karnatak Jounal of Agricultural Sciences.

Internships Opportunities

College was not providing and internship to us. We were paid by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) worth Rs1800/-. later this fellowship amount increased to Rs 5000/- now. The DBT used to send stipend to department. We were paid through that.

Placement Experience

1.5

To make placements nationalized banks usually visited around that time. One student from our batch placed as agriculture officer (Scale I) in Canara bank. The fee was on an average less than 40000/- per month. Few students joined for PhD. 2 to 3 students joined in a seed company through the help of alumni of our institute.

College Events

2

In our institute the biggest event celebrated was KRISHIMELA which was celebrated for four days. Different companies used to participate and farmers from rural area comes and interact with those companies. These companies are mostly agricultural based like seed, fertilizer, GMO, farm mechanization etc. festivals we celebrated annual dramatic function, inter college youth meet etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure was feasible. For me semester fee was less than 3000/- per semester from the year 2009 to 2011. But the research expenses were incurred by DBT for each student in our department. Semester fee usually paid by the students twice a year. later the semester fee they had increased looking upon the inflation and the expenses.

Fees and Financial Aid

I dont have any idea regarding that. I have not availed any scholarship offered by institutes. I used to be paid by DBT. Loans students used to avail from banks.

Campus Life

4

The institute is situated at western ghat area. Its always covered with green vegetation. The gender ratio is 50:50. Students do their personal parties but as such institute does not conduct. One farewell and one freshers party used to be conducted in each department. students from different parts of india used to come here for study by appearing entrance test conducted by ICAR. tehre is no such biasness for gender, ethinicity, race, religion, sexual orientatiation. politics or economic status. everyone was given equal priority.

Hostel Facilities

3

Hostel was twin sharing room. There were enough rooms for the students. The hostel charge was covered within semester fee (around 3000/-). A very good wifi facility was provided in the institute too. But the food quality was not good. Other items like washing machine should have provided. For senior students they could have provided attach bathroom rooms.

Alumni/Alumna

UAS Dharwad has a strong alumni network. They are helpful and cooperative. While appearing for PhD entrance seniors cooperated a lot in preparation and selecting the faculties to join for PhD.

Exam Structure

The exam pattern was very hectic. There were three different exams in a semester. One was first term then second term and finally the semester exam. At the end of three semester a comprehensive exam was conducted. Here we need to appear all the three semesters course exams simultaneously and then the final semester was for research work and thesis submission.

Admission

The application form is available online from jnu site that is jnu.ac.in. the application process starts in the middle of march. the examination was conducted in May. After the result was out, we provided our preferred institutes from 1 to 10. And as per the rank I was assigned to UAS Dharwad for MSc admission. Then a deadline was assigned to me. In that respect I joined MSc Agri at UAS dharwad. The administration was cooperative to me. The Head of the Department also coordinated well for a smooth admission.

Faculty

3

In our department number of faculties were less. Whoever were the faculties they had expertise in microbial biotechnology, plant biotechnology and plant breeding. They lack the faculty from Immunology, industrial biotechnology though the course was agricultural biotechnology. But whoever faculties were there they were highly qualified. everyone had phd degree. and few faculties had done post doc abroad. in their respective subject they are upto the mark and taught well.

Hence this university is reputed one in Karnataka.. i choose this one and I got the seat and I am very happy for this. The teaching methods are really good but it depends on particular lecturers, how they teach .. For main sem exam the time was around 3 hours for 70 marks and it was moderate and can be manageable
