Abhilash Paneri's Review On BITS Pilani, Pilani

BITSAT. I took this exam because its one of the top engineering school in India. One major reason for this college to be top tier is that its admission process is totally merit based. So your peers are all deserving candiates.

It was top notch. This is another critical reason why BITS Pilani is as good as it is. Very flexible course structure with a lot of options based on the student's interest. It is adopted from MIT USA. So two people from the same degree can have two entirely different set of skills based on their respective interest.

Yes, We had a 2 month internship at the end of 2nd year and a semester long one in the final year. Both these were managed by the college and are given to you based on your academic record and the list of preferences that you have provided. Summer internship are usually unpaid, but the one ins final year can get you as much as 40-50k a month of stipend.

Majorly there were two events that were popular at BITS. The cultural festival called Oasis was indeed an Oasis for all the hard working students stranded at Desert Pilani. Campus looked completely different in those days with a lot of out station participation from colleges all over the country. The tech fest called APOGEE was also of top quality.

When I was around, the fee structure was pretty minimal with something like 25k per semester. On top of that, there was a provision of Merit cum need scholarship, where if you are doing decently in your academics and your parent's income is below a certain value, then you get a good rebate on your fee.

As i mentioned in one of the earlier questions, the BITS Merit cum need scholarship was a big helping hand to lot of its students. I personally availed BITSAA travel grant under which I presented at an international conference and part of my expenses were paid to by the BITS alumni association.

Hostel facility back then were as good as it can get at 600 rs per semester. We had single rooms for first year itself with Internet connection in each. Now there are new buildings with better room have been constructed is what I hear. Mess food was hygenic and as good as a mess food can get. No major complains there.

ITs pretty intense as we may end of taking upto 90 test per semester. But then again, thats the reason why most of the students coming out of BITS pilani are technically sound and industry appreciates this fact. But then some folks might take it as stressfull as well. So it can go both ways.

Online exam called BITSAT is the admission test for BITS Pilani. Once all the applicants have given the test, a combined merit list is generated and based on you are aloted admission (if you qualify) to the the branch preferences and campus preferences that you have provided while filling up the application form.

Again, the faculty was a lot of learned people with great education backgrounds. Hardly there were any professors that we could doubt were not worthy enough to be teaching at BITS. I would rate the quality of faculty at BITS even higher than most of the IITs.
