I took the IIT JEE to get into my college and I scored 235 marks in 2010 and secured an AIR of 3582. I wanted to join one of the old IITs and a take up a course that was related to Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering and hence I took Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture as it had courses from both these departments.
Course Curriculum Overview
Our course structure was quite good, but there was an opinion that it should be updated as the Ship Building industry is very dynamic. Some of the methods we learned were outdated but we still learned them, the college is doing its bit to update the curriculum.
Internships Opportunities
Our college invites companies to provide internships as it is mandatory for all UG students to do an internship during the course of the stay in IIT Kharagpur. If students can get into some of the major companies that come for internship, then the stipend is really good. There are several foreign companies as well which give very good stipend. The overall experience was excellent and it was a brilliant learning curve for all of us.
Placement Experience
Placements usually happen in December and if you are smart enough, you should get placed easily. Being an IIT, I do not need to tell you that students are generally very smart here. I got placed on the 4th day of placements in our college. A lot of core companies and non-core companies come for placements and students generally, prefer the non-core companies.
College Events
Being a multi-cultural college, all events were celebrated by the various associations. Being from Kerala, I never thought I'd be able to celebrate Onam in Kharagpur, but for 6 years I celebrated Onam every year. We also have several societies which organise and celebrate various events. In addition we have a social and cultural fest named Spring Fest which is insane as well as a tech fest named Kshitij.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Since this is a government college, the fee structure was quite relaxed. I only had to pay around 45 k to 50 k per semester for all facilities. This includes hostel fee, mess fee, tuition fee. You name it, they were all there int his. All facilities were cheap for us, we got super fast internet and we had to pay only 500 per sem for that as part of our fee.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is also very good. Students are generally very attached to their hostels and alumni usually return to the college often. I myself have gone back to the college once already. I was also part of the alumni cell of the college which helped in organising the annual alumni meet every year.
Exam Structure
Our time table was generally very relaxed. We didn't have a hectic schedule at any point of time, however the work and course was not easy either. Exams happened twice a semester - the mid semester exam and the end semester exam. The mid sem carried 30% weight age for that subject and the end sem carried 50%. The rest was for class tests, assignments or attendance depending on the professor.
Admission
The admission process was very simple and straight forward. Most of the procedure was online and very transparent as it was an IIT. I did have to visit the nearest IIT (In my case, IIT Madras) for one admission procedure. Other than that, the rest of the admission procedure was at Kharagpur when I joined and it was done very systematically and quickly despite there being over 1300 new students.
Faculty
We had some terrific professors at our college and we also had our fair share of professors who lacked basic behavioural courtesy and since it is an autonomous university, we had to bear with them. There were several professors who loved doing their job and we'll never be able to thank them enough.
