Life at IIT Palakkad

IIT Palakkad is from the new tier of IITs. I got in touch with the female students and Professors through the Jee Helpdesk. I asked them, why they joined this place. I was scared that I won't get good experience as it's one of the new IITs. Their answers and their youtube page confirmed that they have a lot of opportunities for students. After the result of Jee advanced, I enroll myself with JOSAA website. On the website, I have to fill up my list of preferences which involved College Name and the course. Before IIT Palakkad - Electrical Engineering, I had IIT Dhanbad - Electronics Engineering. After that, I had lined up Electrical Engineering at other new IITs. My name reason to choose IIT Palakkad over those was because through the pictures and news available at the college website, campus looked well established and very beautiful.I have spent four years studying in IIT Palakkad and it has completely transformed me. When you're studying for JEE Mains or Advanced, sometimes you give up your hobbies or maybe everything and focus on studies. This place gave me a chance to rewrite myself, nurture my talents. I am a part of the technical clubs, the annual techno-cultural fest and manage my studies. If I chose an old well established IIT, I might have never got these many chances to explore. In terms of academics, I am so glad that I chose the Department of Electrical Engineering here because they have such vast variety of courses to choose from and it has been so much easier to work in interdisciplinary fields like Robotics. I got to work on projects with brilliant professors from different streams as well.

Initially, I chose Electrical Engineering because of my interest in Physics but I continued to be in this stream because I like to learn a lot of new things and the curriculum provides that. The course curriculum offers course on Nano technology, Communication, Instrumentation, Digital and Analog Systems, Control Systems, Power Systems, Electrodynamics, Semiconductors etc. In addition to these primary courses, it also offers more research based and specialized course in all of these fields. As part of Electives, I am given a chance to opt from few courses of any department as well. There are established laboratories for each of these courses. Usually, you learn the theoretical part in these courses and perform experiments based on it in the lab course.All the faculties are highly qualified, they have graduated from various IITs or IISCs. Each faculty has its own unique way of teaching. Based on the aspects they teach us, they design regular assignments on it and have one tutorial class scheduled to discuss it. Apart from there, there are two tests and one End Semester Examination. Also, every course can have one or more projects or presentation based on a research paper. The pattern chosen for each course is different and discussed between students and faculty while finalizing. Mostly the term exams are designed to test the knowledge, the questions are very new and tricky, but they are quite fun to work on.

I got internship at UST Global for 2 months in summer with a stipend of 25,000 per month.

A CDC platform is established for calling more and more companies based on the interest of students.

The total fee comes around 9,50,000 for eight semesters / four years. It includes the hostel and mess fees, and the tuition fees. It can cost much more if you're living off campus and also it limits the resources you can use in college. There are many scholarship options available and can be found on the college website. The annual techno-cultural fest petrichor occurs in the month of January. There are currently two campus- Ahalia and Nila Campus, both fully functional. The classrooms are well equipped and centralized cooling is available. There are libraries at both places, which offers a silent place to study, all books related to course work and more, and few fictional books as well. There are labs designated for each department. There is a Centre of Innovation, mainly for students to work on their projects. It's equipped with computers, 3D printers, lathe machine, CNC Machine, workshop tools and machines and many more. You can take equipment from workshop or any other lab with permission. There are many student run clubs in both technical and cultural which includes Robotics Club, Data Analysis Club, Drama Club, Dance Club, Literary Club, etc. Apart from that, there are department associations, Alumni Cell, Media body, etc. There are gyms, cafeterias, places for people to hang out, sunset point. At both campuses, there are few restaurants to go to and few places to hang at. There is a shuttle service between both the campuses.

I have opted for Hostel. In each hostel room, you're given a table, chair, bed and almirah. It can be a room for two or three. Mostly bathrooms are attached to the room. In Nila Campus, the Hostel has a room for studying, a place for celebration, a TV room, and a lift. A long mirror can be found too. The payment for hostel and mess can be done together in the starting of each semester. There is no extra registration process. The meal plan is same for everyone, it involved student approved dishes from both North and South India. There are representatives, to whom we can convey our concerns.
