Remarks
I took admission on this college because I wanted to pursue a career in the merchant navy by getting a bachelor's degree in marine engineering. This institute is the only campus I found in north India. I preferred this college due to its good faculty and placement. Other colleges teaching similar course doesn't have good placement record. I got the above information through my seniors and from the sites of DG shipping of India, and the IMU website.
Course Curriculum Overview
I have chosen this course as I m very much interested in science and I wanted to make my career in merchant navy. So, Marine engineering completes both of my desires. Teaching staff here is average. They have less student to faculty ratio. We can say it like 1 teacher on 5 students. Most of the teachers are highly qualified and some are averagely qualified. Teaching method is good except for one or two. The training instructors are all well qualified and retired from either merchant navy or Indian Navy. Talking about exams, we have 8 semesters. Each semester have two sessional exams and one Semester exam along with the pratical exam and viva. The exams are very difficult to pass many students get back in one or two subjects.
Placement Experience
The college has a good placement record. Almost 85% of students get placed. The students become eligible for placement in the third year. There are no fixed packages and none of the sites has mentioned the salary packages. But students get an average package of 2 lakhs. The person who has given a backlogged exam would face difficulty in getting placed. Rest, there is no such percentage kind of eligibility for sitting in placement. If I get placed in the campus placement, then I will be joining a shipping company as a trainee engineer.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee for Marine Engineering is very high. Not only in this college but in every college the fee for marine engineering is high. It is around 15 lakhs including hostel charges. Most of the students take a loan from banks and institute helps in that too. They assist us on how to take loan. Since the placement is very good, therefore, almost 85% students get placed in the campus placement. The companies coming are maersk, msc, fleet, etc. They never talked about scholarship to me. Maybe they are providing it for other courses like Diploma or BSc in Nautical Science.
Campus Life
The life at campus is much like an army camp. However, students find their own way to have fun. The fests are conducted occasionally and there is a sports fest that is held every year. If you like to read, the library is available on the campus with a lot variety of books. The classrooms are air conditioned. They also have machanics lab, workshop with fully equipped machines. There is a large model of ship in which they teach about the working of the engine in a ship. That model is full of safety measures. We have a swimming pool, a playground, and a playing club too. But there is nothing like movie theatre and all. The campus life is full of fun as well as discipline.
Hostel Facilities
There are two types of the hostel. Air-conditioned and non air-conditioned. We have to pay 30,000 extra for AC. The accommodation facilities are good. They provide us with a separate cupboard. Cleaned toilets. And ventilation is also good. They provide us with food in the canteen. You will get homemade food and the quantity is sufficient. The food includes Chai, Morning breakfast like buttered toast, paratha. Mid-day meal includes roti, chawal and a dish along with salads. The evening snacks are the same as morning snacks and so the night meal is also the same as mid-day meal but the dish is changed. The person who is paying such a high program fee can also afford the hostel. There is no special registration for the hostel as it is compulsory for every student to live in a hostel.
Interview Experience
Firstly, I took an entrance exam other than IMU CET. An interview was taken after I cleared the entrance exam. The interview was not so tough. We have to sit in formals of course. In the beggining, they asked about myself, my family background and relation with the career in merchant navy. Then they asked about my personal habbits, hobbies and my physical capabilities. After that they asked me few questions from physics, maths, and geography which were quite tough. I really didnt knew how were they gonna take interview so I wasn't prepared at all. I just calmed my mind down sat for the interview and I passed.
