A Raviteja's Review On IIT Kharagpur - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITKGP], Kharagpur

The institute is simply awesome. I don't have any bad remarks to say about my institute. The college management is doing a good job. So overall its really awesome.

I completed B Tech. In-order to get high paying job i decided to do higher studies M.Tech in IIT. Hence appeared for GATE 2015. My score is 382. Well the score is less but i have reservation. I actually wanted admission in iit madras but didn't get there. Finally secured admission in IIT Kharagpur. I opted for CSE 1st preference followed by IT 2nd preference. For these disciplines there was no interview. The admission was based purely on gate score. I got admission in the spot round which was held on 10 july. The reporting was on 13 july and our classes started from 20 july onwards.

The course curriculum is very good in terms of the standards. These people try to keep the course curriculum standards on par with foreign universities like MIT Stanford Univeristy etc. In my first semester i have to complete five subjects and two labs.

I'm first year student and i don't have proper idea about internship. Probably M.Tech students wont have internships. Well the stipend that is currently offered by the institute is Rs 12400 Per Month. This is the gate scholarship offered by the institute through MHRD. Previously the stipend was only Rs 8000 Per Month. The increase in the stipend is clearly an added benefit to all the M.Tech students of various IIT's,NIT's etc.

Well again i can't give proper information about the placements but after communicating with my seniors recently i came to know that XEROX Research Center came for placements recently. Don't have exact dates. From our department several students were placed in several companies. Few of the companies are Nvidia,IBM,Microsoft, verizon,oracle,cisco,yahoo etc. So the job opportunities are plenty but mind that you have to sit with the B.Tech students during the placements. So your main competition will be B.Tech students. The feedback from my seniors is that the written test is going to be tough and if you can clear this one then your chances of getting the job is very high.

The major institute events are as follows Spring Fest which will be held in January every year. The event will take place for 3 days. Techno-Management Festival (Kshitij) which will also be held in January every year. The event will take place for 3 days. Since i have joined the institute this year itself i have not yet participated these events so i cannot describe much about them. My seniors told me that the fests are really amazing and we will get lots of fun. Really a good move for relaxing the minds. Over and above the month of January will pass without your notice. That much of involvement will be there in these events.

Well the fee structure is definitely feasible because you pay only Rs 37881 as admission fees which includes semester fees (Stationary fees, examination fees etc), hostel fees,mess fees altogether. The fees also includes annual insurance fee. The fees i mentioned is for regular M.Tech students who belong to unreserved categories. For reserved categories the admission fees is Rs 32881 that means these people will receive Rs 5000 waiver.

Dont have proper idea about loan facility because i did not avail any loan facility and i didnt had that need. When it comes to scholarships offered by the institute it offers QIP scholaships to QIP Students. It offers PG scholarships to M.Sc students.

The campus life is very vibrant. Always you will find one or other activity happening every day. Recently a 3 day Workshop took place on Developments in Pavement Design, Evaluation and Material Characterization in our institute from 15 to 17 Nov. There will be Annual NCC,NSS Camp which will be held for 12 days and this will be held in November evey year. The Inter-IIT Sports Meet will be held in the month of december every year. So far we celebrated so many birhtday parties irrespective of male or female. Usually we prefer the technology gymkana for arranging parties. Because i am new to here i cant describe much in detail. But as of now i did not face any issues regarding gender,ethnicity,race,religion,sexual orientation,politics or economic status. When it comes to gender the institute treats both male and female equally.

The hostels are old, the hostel rooms are not in good condition. No proper lights no proper paint on the walls. The water facility is very bad. You have to face water problem frequently and that too in the morning hours. This situation is very bad because the classes start at 7:30 am and you don't get proper water to get yourself ready. The room is double sharing. This situation is understandable because the strength of the students is very large. I was assigned to the hostel named MMM hall. It is purely for M.Tech Male students. A student has to pay Rs 8250 just for the hostel room. I rate the hostel facilities as very bad. This is my opinion. If they provide proper lights water that is more than sufficient. The mess is terrible. The mess food is pathetic. I suggest the management people to change the mess people. The mess is run privately. The food standards are really poor. They do not maintain hygiene. The rotis that they make are from maida. They dont use good quality vegetables. And the list goes on. I wish if they correct these problems by bringing up with a solution. I suggest them to maintain hygiene first second is using good quality vegetables and also please use atta for rotis. Well in the end its in the hands of the management. I rate the mess food as very bad.

I did not meet any alumni person but i had interactions with my seniors quite often. They very nice and humble. They very good and talented in academics. I too so many tips and suggestions from them. They are very cooperative and helpful. They don't show any ego feelings. They don't do ragging. Not at all. Ragging is strictly prohibited in our institute. So you are 100% safe and secure in the institute. I really had a good experience with them.

The exams are of two types for us. Mid Semester Exam they conduct this exam once in a semester. This exam will be held in the department and the duration is 2 hours. Ideally the paper will be for 60 marks. We have to appear for five theory papers. Mid Semester Lab Exam they conduct these lab exams soon after mid sem exams. I have two labs. So I appeared for two mid sem lab exams. They are conducted in the labs during the usual lab hours. End Semester Lab Exam they conduct these lab exams just before the end sem exams. These exams are also conducted in the labs during the usual lab hours. End Semester Exam they conduct this exam at the end of each semester. This exam will also be held in the department and the duration is 3 hours. Ideally the paper will be for 100 marks. We have to appear for five theory papers.

The faculty is very good in terms of knowledge experience. They have very good and sound profile. All of them are phd professors. They are very student friendly very active and always ready to answer the student's doudts. Moreover they are not so strict like we face in the intermediate studies. They are very nice and treat the students like a family. My department is School of Information Technology in which we have a total of ten faculty members.
