Remarks

Many may not considered one's college an ideal one for various reasons but I think S. N Evening had been a experience that I will carry for a long time. There are of course many suggestions that if implemented will surely give the students a better time. But overall, I think when I was just a sophomore, I had a lot on my plate and S. N Evening made the time flexibility for me a great help. I do not know how it would have been, if I were in some other college, but I have more than to be thankful to the college for all it has departed in me, especially the teachers.

Course Curriculum Overview

I am almost at the end of my final year, therefore had been exposed to the entirety of my college curriculum, exams, and other academic formats. I am studying ENGLISH LITERATURE, for the past 3 years. For any college student, the initial year is the most crucial and difficult. Crucial in the sense, that one has a lot on his plate to grasp and difficult, because its all new and uncertain. The new-bees are generally at the mercy of their professor to help on the subject matter and other college related issues. But unfortunately that does not often lands as imagined by a student. In my opinion, the curriculum is well suited for a student in the English Department, as the entire Literature is intelligently spread over the three years' time. It merits the student will gradual understanding of the subject and allows one's cerebral for later introduction. Students are not deprived of any aspect of their course in the following three years, which results in an outstanding performance, considering that the student is well equipped in the matter. The following method promotes good grades, potential learning and open scope for further studies. The colleges in general differ from one another, in term of internal exams, i. e, college based. Surendranath Evening College, engages in several class assignments and tests held by the professors and a compulsory mid-term exam, which is taken a few months before the Board Exam. As a student it is understandable that students suffer greatly under heavy study pressure but at the same time, preparing for such exams and having an overall idea of the question pattern benefits the students in the long run. The questioning standard of the college is similar to that of the BOARD, to sync in the students and put them in exposure to the kind of questions that they might expect from the BOARDS.

Placement Experience

1

As of now, the college has not yet channelized with the placement and internship. But the final year students are equipped for the teams/companies, our college has tied up with.

College Events

2.5

S. N Evening, celebrates the diversity of the festivals in India. From Republic Day to Gandhi Jayanti, all major festivals and national holidays are recognized in the college. The National Holidays, especially are observed with servitude and respect. The patron of the college, Sir Surendranath Banerjee's memorial day is paid a grand homage. The college invited all its students on the Annual Day, which is the most grand celebration of the college.

Fee Structure And Facilities

S. N Evening, being an government aided college has an affordable fee structure. The fees is collected on the quarterly basis and the annual fees added to it amounts up to 5000. The college has an domestic bank branch for official payment and other important transaction. The college mostly transact via cash.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes, the college advises the students of the various government scholarships that can be benefited for a student, but it has not yet launched any scholarship institutionalizing it.

Campus Life

In my three years experience, I have had a unexpected college life that is otherwise promised to us by various other mediums. The gender ratio of my class was 10 girls per 7 boys, and we had an overall batch-strength of 90 students. Besides, the college encourages the students to form various bodies/cells that represent the different college departments overall. Moving on to discrimination on any basis is highly intolerable and may result in expulsion.

Hostel Facilities

S. N Evening has not winged into hosteling students as of now. But there are many P. Gs and other lodging nearby the college, especially for the students who are from the outskirts and rural areas.

Alumni/Alumna

The senior students, I remember, when I was in college were helpful to certain extend with teachers circle and study related queries.

Admission

Every year thousands and thousands of students are participating in the run to accomplish the degree of GRADUATION from their dream colleges. Alas! Every college has an limited seat offering, that too only for the students who make the merit list and entrance. The admission process of my college is no different than so. The college provides an online notice prior to the publication dates of the higher secondary exams, after which the college would announce the online form fill-up dates and other information. Once a student is done with the online admission and payment processes, he/she will have to wait for the following notice. The next notice, basically will be the publication of the merit lists, which comes out in three installment and dates. The final merit list, i. e, is the 3rd one counts in the last of the students selected by the college. Generally no further admission is entertained afterwards otherwise exceptionally. The selection of the students is purely on the basis of academic achievements.

Faculty

2.5

The entire English Department is consisted of co-operative and professional help. The hierarchy begins with the HOD and senior professors, who age range would be from 45 - 55. The said professors are qualified M. A and hold a PhD in the teaching subject. Following them, would be Assistant Professor, with an age group of 35 - 45. The mentioned group have an M. A Degree and an M. Phil Degree. A regular college class will have 4 to 5 major subject class along with 2 to 3 elective-subject classes. The class duration is 45 mins to a hour. The teaching faculty provides amply clarification and help (theory/web) to ease the doubts faced. On several occasions, students are required to submit a presentation to the teachers and play it with a lecture/talk in the class. This strategy, immensely help in the development of public speaking. The lectures executed by the teachers deal not only with the subject but also with many other branches that entwines with it. As a suggestion, I believe that, a free/leisure period must be assured for the students to relax them from tiredness and prepare them for the later lectures.

Course Curriculum Overview:

There are several prospects, especially peer-to-peer counseling, where you get a mentor. We call it mentor mentee program. So, there will be groups of students, and each group will have a mentor who helps you whenever you face any issues whether in real life or in your academic journey. They’re always there for you. There are also remedial classes, and extracurricular activities are included in the curriculum. You even get the freedom to choose what you want to pursue creatively, like joining poetry clubs and similar groups. Right now, I’m at Banaras University, and the curriculum here is really good. We have sessions on public speaking, how to conduct interviews, and many other practical skills. These are highly commendable because they help you in professional situations like the one I’m in now. However, I would say that teachers could be a bit more active with electronic tools like using PPT presentations or audio-visual methods instead long lecture sessions. As for exams, I wouldn’t say they’re too difficult because there are many weekly assessments and sessionals, which actually help you evaluate yourself better.
