My PhD at IACS Kolkata

The course curriculum is highly advanced with the structure being our choice, since in PhD we can decide which topic we want to pursue research on. My major was in genetically manufactured seeds and plants. The exam is research/project based and grading system is applied.

The placement opportunity after PhD are not very well defined since most of the PhD holders prefer to research further in the institute itself and they are offered a reasonable salary. Some go ahead for a doctorate or work in scientific institutions.

The fee structure of two years of PhD is nominal like it is in almost every college in India for PhD programs. The total fees was 30,000 Rs for the course. The students that had attained a scholarship were paid for the entire duration of the course through a stipend.

Scholarship is offered to students who have scored extraordinarily or, over a certain threshold due to which they qualify for a stipend. I did qualify for a stipend due to my score in the PG program, that I achieved.

There are plenty of extracurricular activities that students in the college are involved in, sports like football and badminton are actively participated in. The laboratories in the institute are highly maintained with essential equipments and the staff is also very responsible.

I got my admission in the PhD course through a merit based score that I achieved in my PG program. A minimum score is required to be fulfilled, which is different for different streams. Since seats for research & PhD are low, more emphasis is based on what a student can offer to the institute.

The faculty that is responsible for working alongside and guiding PhD students is very highly qualified and has vast experience. The professor who was my guide helped me a lot during my 2 year long PhD and without him, I wouldn't be where I am today.
