Jadavpur University - [JU], M.A FILM STUDIES
Reviewed on Dec 14, 2015

Remarks

The management of the University is one of its kind and the professors make it all the more easier for the students.

Entrance Preview

Jadavpur university conducts entrance exams for each department. The exam is followed by a face to face interview after that a final list list is put up in the website. I scored average score, but did well in the interview board. This was the only university in India to have launched a masters course in film studies.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

This course is meant for film academia although also touches a part of filmmaking. But it is mostly related to film aesthetics, film theories and other tools required for proper film reading and decoding tge meta-texts.

Internships Opportunities

In general there is not a proper placement ippertunity in this field. However, many companies do visit the campus, but it mostly depends on the personal experience and skills.

Placement Experience

3

There is no such placement oppertunity in the film Industry. However, one can assist the professors or proceed towards higher education. A lot of Students exchange programs and research oppertunuty is offered at the department itself.

College Events

5

There are numerous sports and culteral activities in the campus apart from sanskriti, the celebrated culteral fest there are numerous programs organized. Film festivals and the numerous seminars, exhibitions form a part and parcel of the students.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The college fees are rather cheap and affordable around Rs 2500 or so in a year. Furthermore there are many scholarships and allowences for the brilliant students one needs to follow the website, for a detailed update.

Fees and Financial Aid

There are a lot of scholarschip programs for the students who are below the proverty line. Furthermore, the rewards and student exchange programs makes it easier for the brilliant students.

Campus Life

5

Everything is dynamic in the campus people are very broad minded and are always open to changes. However the students from the rural areas find it a bit difficult to adjust, because of the free mixing of the opposite sexes. But there is no pressure, everybody encourages productivity and talent in the campus.

Hostel Facilities

5

Even though I have never stayed in the hostels, my friends who resided there found it pretty cheap and affordable. The canteens too are cheaper. But one cannot expect very high appliances like air condition or geysers in the decent rates.

Alumni/Alumna

I am still connected to the seniors and juniors, and have been working with them in different projects. I find myself lucky to be a part of the JU family.

Exam Structure

There are two semestars each year but each semestar comprises of three internals and a final examination. The marks of the internal examination is being selected through the best of two method.

Faculty

5

The faculty is undoubtedly one of the best in India but it is purely for the academicians, and not to be a successful filmmaker. For those who are interested in technical aspects, they should opt for a diploma course from the film institutes after this.

Placement Experience:

Most of the placements that took place at least for the literature departments ended up with people joining educational institutes and NGOs. Very few joined corporate enterprises like Accenture. But it does provide almost a 5 LPA, if well placed. It is academically rigorous, therefore academics are weighed more than industry.

Placement Experience:

Students are eligible for applying for internships after the 3rd semester, and students can apply for placements only after 4th semester. Companies like Ericsson, Ernst and Young, JPMG makes visits our department for mostly analyst roles for economic and fundamental trading decisions. The highest offer made was 45LPA while the average is 7.5LPA. The median pakage is 8LPA. Almost 90% students secure placements after completing their degree since the Training and placement cell is pretty proactive in securing good company visits. I plan for investing and analyst roles in banking companies. I would sit for placements hoping for the same.
