Remarks
IIT Kharagpur is one of the most reputable engineering colleges in the country. The institute performs really well in terms of research and placements, and that is what motivated me to join the college. At my rank, I took the best branch/stream available to me, i.e. Mechanical Engineering, keeping in mind the better placement opportunities it would bring to me.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course syllabus is, disappointingly, outdated and not up to current industrial standards or requirements. Basic engineering softwares like Matlab, CAD, Ansys, Comsol, etc. need to be included in the curriculum, as they find much more frequent use in industries as well as research projects. Surprisingly, NO industrial exposure was provided during the entire 4 years, apart from voluntary industrial internships opted by the students in their vacations by themselves. The department really lacked big time in this matter. Other departments in IIT Kharagpur have provided timely industrial exposure. The faculty of the department are good, and well-versed in their subjects. Not all of them are very inspiring as teachers, but mostly all of them provide you enough to create a decent understanding of the subject. Some faculties worthy of mention for their effective notes and teaching skills are Prof. Jeevanjyoti Chakraborty(Fluid Mechanics), Prof. Atul Jain(Mechanics of Solids), Prof. Saumitra Paul(Machine Tools and Machining), and Prof. Ghosh-Moulic(Applied Thermofluids)
Internships Opportunities
Internship at OYO LIFE Pvt. Ltd. Profile - Data Analytics Stipend - 30,000 per month Process to get internship - through On-Campus internships offered by Career Development Centre, IIT Kharagpur.
Placement Experience
A large number of companies, mostly Indian and a few from countries like USA, Germany, and Japan, visit the campus for placements. The placement process is entirely coordinated by the Career Development Centre (CDC), IIT Kharagpur. Most companies offer jobs in the profiles of data and coding, with few other offering consultant roles, and even fewer in core profiles. The alumni network really helps a lot in the placement process, bringing in world-class companies to the campusing rounds and providing great opportunities to the students.
College Events
The campus life is one of the best in IIT Kharagpur. Several competitions and events are held around the year, and there is always something or the other for the students to participate in, in terms of extracurricular activities. Inter-hall competitions (hall here refers to a hostel) are held in the months from January to April, where students represent their hostels in sports, cultural events, as well as technical competitions like case studies, data analytics, math olympiads, etc. During Diwali, an 'Illumination' competition, where each hostel uses diyas to depict incredible events or themes on 20-ft high vertical mats, are organised. Students of each hostel work together for around 2 months to make these diya structures, and it offers a wonderful spectacle. 2 major fests are organised in the month of January: Kshitij, Asia's largest Techno-Management festival, and Spring Fest, the cultural festival of IIT Kharagpur. Both fests see massive participation from students across the country, with prize money worth lakhs up for grabs. Both fests are conducted for two-and-a-half days, and have widespread appeal among the students. Apart from this, each department also conducts their own departmental festival, where they invite participants from around the country for case study competitions, special guest lectures, and panel discussions on topics relevant to the department.
Fees and Financial Aid
The institute offers Means-cum-Merit (MCM) scholarship for students whose annual family income is below a certain value. I have personally not availed the scholarship, but it offers a necessary respite to students who suffer financially.
Campus Life
The campus provides excellent overall infrastructure. Wi-Fi connectivity can be found in almost all parts of the 2200-acre campus. The connection speed is decently high. LAN ports are also available in all hostel rooms to plug into students' personal laptops. The institute's internet network is behind a proxy wall, and a certain proxy address needs to be used to access internet, in addition to the unique username and password for the student. A total of three large stadiums are present on the campus for sports like football, cricket, hockey, and track-and-field games like long jump, pole vault, shot put, javelin, races and sprints, etc. Outdoor courts for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, indoor court for badminton, as well as gymnasiums and swimming pools are present. Games and sports likes table tennis, chess, billiards, weightlifting, bridge, karate, etc. are played and promoted by the Students' Gymkhana. In addition, sport facilities for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and grounds and gyms are also available separately within each hostel. IIT Kharagpur has one of the largest libraries in the country. The rooms are very spacious, and can accommodate well over a 1000 students. Computers with internet connections and air-conditioning facilities are also provided throughout the library. The equipments in labs are well-provided, and more often than not serve the required purpose. New, more advanced equipments are regularly bought or built within the departments themselves. The institute also provides bus facilities for transportation within the campus, making transportation efficient and effortless between the academic area and the student hostels. There are 21 hostels as of now, each having their own separate mess. Mess facilities' quality differs from one hostel to another, but in general the quality is generally better than that mess facilities of most other colleges. There are also several guest houses within the campus, to house guests or parents' of students visiting the campus. A marketplace and several food joints are also present at convenient locations around the campus.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel rooms have enough space for the intended number of tenants. Single rooms, double rooms, and triple rooms, all three are available. Usually, students' in their first and second year are allotted triple rooms, and then they gradually move on to double and single rooms in subsequent years', subject to availability. The hostel has its own library, common room with television, several shops within the hostel(stationary, snacks, juice, canteen, etc.), and sporting facilities like basketball courts, grassy grounds for football and cricket practice, badminton court, and volleyball court. Avialing hostel facility is a must in IIT Kharagpur. There is no provision for local self-arranged stay, except in case of an emergency.
