Overall itメs a growing institute in the eastern India. For computer science and IT discipline, the courses are good and students get to learn if efforts are put in. For other, better faculty is required along with more facility of laboratory.
Entrance Preview
I wrote West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination for getting admission into HIT- Kolkata. I secured a rank of 2398 in the exam. Other exams which are considered for admission include AIEEE (now named as JEE)
Course Curriculum Overview
Four year curriculum is divided into 8 semesters with first and second semester covering general engineering subjects. The specialisation related courses starts from 2nd year onwards. Different streams offered are computer science, information technology, mechanical, chemical, biotechnology, instrumentation, electronics, and electrical engineering.The course is well designed and covers both practical laboratories and theory classes.After completion of 2nd year, the student is supposed to complete a 2 months summer internship programme.
Internships Opportunities
HIT does not conduct summer placements on the campus. However, they have tie-up with few companies which provide training. In this case, students are charged a nominal amount for the training.Students are also free to do summer internship on their own. They are just required to inform the departmental head and training and placement office regarding the company where they will do their internship/training.
Placement Experience
HIT-K conducts final placements on the campus. Several companies visit the campus for placements. Salary offered is in the range of Rs 3 Lakh to Rs 5 lakh per annum. The college invite mass recruiters like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, CTS and thereby see 100 per cent placement season every year.
College Events
The college organises two events every year. The cultural fest Eclecia and tech fest Dakshh is organised by the studentsメ affair council. The fest sees huge participation from colleges in WB, Jharkhand, Bihar and nearby states.The campus organises also organised inter-college sports tournament however, these tournaments are organised at an ad-hoc level depending on the time, interest of students and council members.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The college charges around Rs 4-6 lakhs for 4 years. The Return on investment is average.The college has tie-up with banks for education loans as well. The hostel cost, mess cost and others are separate if the student opts for the same.
Fees and Financial Aid
HIT-K offers scholarship to students on merit-cum-means basis. The scholarship ranges from 10% to 100% and depends on annual income, and the academic performance. The institute provide limited number of scholarships every year (around 6-8 per year per department).
Campus Life
Campus life in HIT-K is average. Events, sports are organised which keeps you busy and engaged.Apart from that the college has library, common room, sports infrastructure and many more which keeps you engaged when you are free on campus.
Hostel Facilities
The college has 3-4 hostels on the campus. Separate hostels for girls and boys are there. Rooms are both twin sharing and single. Allotment of single room happens only in third and fourth year and it depends on your academic performance as the number of rooms are limited.Mess provides food with pre-defined menu for every week. It includes everything from salad to sweet dish for lunch and dinner. Non veg is served thrice a week.Breakfast included cornflakes, milk, tea, etc.
Alumni/Alumna
HITK has an alumni association which connects all the alumni of the institute since its inception. The office bearers work hard to organised alumni meet every year depending on the availability of funds, and time. The association acts as an interface between the campus and alumni.
Exam Structure
Each subject has a mid-term and an end term examination which are conducted by West Bengal University.Apart from theory examination, each subject has a laboratory component (practical exam) which account for 20-25% of the total score.
Faculty
Faculty of computer science and IT specialisation is very good and experienced. They have varied research interest. However, for other specialisation such as mechanical, chemical, biotechnology, instrumentation, electronics, and electrical engineering more experienced faculty is required.Senior faculty holds PhD degree while others are MTech qualified. Some of the faculty conducts research work throughout the year. Faculty are easily reachable as they can be seen in the department if not in class.
