Remarks

The classes are irregular at times. The student politics can sometimes get too overwhelming which may cause problems for students and teachers alike. The office staff can be dismissive at times. The number of students is huge with Sonmany different departments so, crowd management becomes difficult at times. Students learn to work hard on their own and achieve great heights from this college.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course curriculum is given by the University of Calcutta. It is very broad and intensive. The economics course covers many important sub topics like Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Development economics, Indian economics, EcoNo,metrics and many such important papers. It covers a huge base which help students choose their most preferred branch of a subject to later specialise on. However, the curriculum is not as research driven as I would have liked it to be. We had to prepare one term paper in our thouree year course. There were No, industrial visits for students but we were called to a placement drive where companies like ICICI Prudential, BIBS and others visited the college.

Placement Experience

2

The placement drive was not well organised in our year. We were not prepared for anything like that. We were informed of it only two days prior to the campussing day. Companies like ICICI Prudential, and some other small ones visited the college. A very small percentage of students got placed that year, if any.

College Events

3

The events that take place in our college are 1) Lalon theke LeNo,n- cultural fest. 2) Student Union Freshers- organised by the Student union for new students. 3) APL: Asutosh Premier League - cricket tournament between departments. 4) ASL: Asutosh Soccer League- football tournament between departments. 5) Department Freshers and Farewells.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is reasonable. My program fee was around Rs 5000 per year for thouree years. I did not have to pay any additional amount to get admission. I had to pay whatever was clearly mentioned in the fee book slip. Other than this we had to pay caution money deposit, exam fees etc.

Fees and Financial Aid

I did not opt for student loan. The college provides some help to the financially weak with lowered fees. The students need to bring signed application from guardian and proof of financial status to be eligible to pay the lowered fees.

Campus Life

2.5

The gender ratio in this college is good. Girls actively take part in curricular and extra curricular activities along with boys. The labs are advanced and we'll equipped. Sporting competitions between departments are regularly held with good participation. Students take part in Youth Theatre organised in association with the State Government. There are theatre, dance and singing clubs that students may join and compete in fests organised by other Colleges. Students get an upper hand if they belong to the student political body.

Alumni/Alumna

Asutosh is a century old college, with each batch producing a big number of students. The alumni network is well spread and they cover many industrial sectors. A senior from my college helped me get an internship in a content writing company in my final year of graduation.

Admission

I opted for this college after receiving recommendations from my seniors. I applied online for my preferred course and then got selected on the basis of merit. I had to visit the college on the stipulated date and time to submit the fees and get admitted. A lot of people apply to this college so the queues during the admission process were very long. Admissions begin from around June and continue till August.

Faculty

3

We had six teachers in our department, four of them being permanent professors and two guest lecturers. Other departments also had a combination of professors and guest lecturers. Out of them at least two hold PhD degrees. The age of teachers are between 30-50 years. The teachers are experts in their fields. The classes were a bit irregular and we had difficulties completing our syllabus by the end of the academic year but the teachers were always ready to help whenever required.

College does provide internship opportunities both through the placement cell as well as department faculty. Semester 5 and Semester 7 students are eligible for placements. Average package is about 5.5 lakh per annum for microbiology course. Although placement percentage is on the lower side majority of students go for higher studies. Many prepare for exams like GATE, IIT JAM, etc.

college placements are good in this college with a number of good financial and consultancy firms coming in with new gen companies as well in the service and sales industry. moreoever getting a good placement in a top financial or consultancy placement requires a POR in a good society as a criteria, its not really required but adds to your chances of getting it. moreover you require to participate in a number of case study competitions for the same as well. my plans after graduation is probably working for a year or two after which i plan on doing my MBA. around 50-60% who apply get a placement.

In today's competitive job market it becomes important for the college to not just help students get degrees but also provide them with placements and internships so that they can have the experience needed to stand at a competitive footing with the rest of the candidates in the world. To look into this, St. Xavier's College has a Placement Cell run by Placements officer Mr. Niladri Sinha under whose guidance, various companies visit the college regularly looking for capable young minds to take under their wing and help provide them with the necessary exposure and experience so that they can combat any obstacles that they face.

The college offers good placements for economis. Students in their final year are eligible for campus placements and there is a cell dedicated to placements. Many students do not opt for placements and go for higher studies but many students who opt for it, get placed with decent packages. Many well-known companies visit the campus as well. I wish to explore my options after completing the degree as of now.
