Remarks
As mentioned before, I consider myself really lucky to have been a part of Nift Mumbai.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am a knitwear designer, graduated from Nift Mumbai. I'm consider myself really lucky to have been a part of this college. The course is well structured and grooms the students well enough for the industrial demands. During the course, there were multiple industrial visits which is really helpful after the college. The curriculum is more practical than theoretical. There are campus placements but I think let's not take that into account because most of the students do not be a part of it. They usually get pre-placement during their internships of graduation projects.
Placement Experience
During the summer break in 3rd year, all the students are supposed to do an internship. It is mandatory. And the last semester is kept for the graduation project where one needs to work in a company. I worked for Raymond apparels during my graduation project. Most of the students are offered jobs during their internship and Graduation Project. Nift holds Placements in mainly 3 centers, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Students from all over the country come to these 3 centers and sit for placements. Not many companies visit campus Placements but most of the students easily get jobs outside Placements. Those who do not, they can surely something for themselves because the curriculum prepares them to do so.
College Events
There are two major festivals. One, the spectrum, where students from nearby colleges get a chance to show their cultural and artistic sides. Whole college is decorated as per a theme. Second, converge, niftians from all over India come and participate is sports and cultural activities. Apart from these, every Wednesday, from 4-6pm, zero hour is held where the college invites people from different fields come and perform or give lectures on their particular fields.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee of Nift is super expensive. The students who get admission after securing a decent rank are asked to pay around 1 lakh per semester that makes it 2 lakhs per year. There is another way one can Get admission into Nift and that is NRI quota. And there fee is around four times to that of normal students. Though they need to pay only once a year. Fee can be paid via rtgs or neft or cheque. There is a transparency in the fee breakdown.
Fees and Financial Aid
No I didn't opt for the scholarship or any kind of educational loan. Nift provides scholarship for the needy students who are financially weak. There are certain criteria thourough which some students are selected and given the scholarship.
Campus Life
The gender ratio is 10:1 there are 10 girls for 1 boy. Probably Nift is the only place where girls are more than boys. One can find people from all over India in one single place. There are many cultural societies, sports club, drama club, cultural club to name a few. There are no dorm parties or such, such activities are not allowed in Nift. Everyone is treated the same. There is no discrimination as such.
Hostel Facilities
No I didn't opt for hostel. Many centers don't have hostels. Nift Mumbai has a grand hostel for both girls and boys. There both Ac and non Ac rooms and their rent is obviously different. Food provided by the hostel is great. Students who have not opted for hostel can also pay and avail the hostel canteen facilities.
Alumni/Alumna
Interaction with seniors is a must in Nift. They really help their fellow juniors during job hunt and other such endeavors. Nift also calls their alumini from time to time to interact with students and share their experience.
Admission
I was always appreciated for my artistic abilities and someone advised me to persue designing as a career. I gave the entrance test for Nift and secured a decent rank. In counselling I got knitwear design in Mumbai and I gladly took it. Now coming to the entrance procedure, there are 3 stages one needs to clear. First, general ability test where MCQ questions are asked from basic class 10 level of maths, English, general knowledge and questions related to brands and stuff. Second, there are questions where one needs to show their artistic side. One needs to sketch and draw as per the questions given. This test happens on the same day as the general ability test. After these two tests, some applicants are shortlisted for the next round of test. Third, the shortlisted applicants are then asked to sit for the situation test which takes place after about a month. In situation test, applicants are given materials such as papers, straws, paints etc and are asked to make a 3D model of something which is given on the question paper. After all these tests general rank is assigned to the applicants as per the marks obtained from the above 3 tests. On the basis of the rank, one is assigned the center and the course.
Faculty
All the faculties are experienced in their fieldwork. Average age of the faculty during my time would be around 35 years. There are young teachers full of new ideas and energy as well as old ones who are full and experience and understanding. Almost all the faculties hold industrial experience and certifications.
