Remarks

NIT durgapur teaches you to live your life independently apart from the courses, you get to meet a lot of different people, and gives you the opportunity to adapt yourself to the needs of the era we live in also, there is a lot to leverage from the brand

Entrance Preview

I appeared for AIEEE my all India rank was 34000 and my state rank was 756. I qualified via the state quota, and initially opted for "Metallurgical and Materials Engineering", but later shifted to "Information Technology" via internal shifting.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course curriculum was a bit behind the current industry standards the first year curriculum included subjects from all fields physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering drawing, literature, computer science the department specific courses included operating Systems data structures digital Electronics compiler design database Management software engineering microprocessors web based Technologies human Resources networking Concepts however, none of the courses had much relevance to the industrial world. In fact, object oriented programming languages such as Java weren't part of the curriculum.

Internships Opportunities

College internship was an coding experience with a music based startup named muziboo which I personally contacted and engaged myself in there was no stipend involved.

Placement Experience

3

Placements in 2010 was poor the following IT companies visited in 2010 TCS (3 lpa) Infosys (3.25 lpa) Cognizant (3 lpa) IBM (3.3 lpa) Microsoft (8.5 lpa).

College Events

4

Mukti a Technical symposium based on GNU/Linux and Open Source Software (2000 participants) aarohan technical and management fest of the college (5000 participants) Verve literary fest (2000 participants) Recstacy cultural fest (4000 participants).

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure is extremely feasible for students in core departments for departments such as Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy, Civil the semester fees were 8000 INR for tech departments like Electronics, IT and Computer Science the semester fees were 18000 INR.

Fees and Financial Aid

DAAD scholarship (Germany) loans are available at good rates from all banks my bank loan was from Punjab National Bank.

Campus Life

3.5

Gender ratio was poor there were around 75 80 girls and over 400 boys in our batch ethnic diversity was rich as we had people from all around the country as we had specific seats for each state although some amount of regional tension existed there was no influence of outside political parties and there were no issues due to religion at any point of time.

Hostel Facilities

3

Hostel facilities included shared rooms till third year (mostly 3 or 4 people in a room), and single rooms in final year amenities included food, electricity, water and internet rooms were decent but since these are old buildings, leakages were common.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is poor those in the alumni group do not interact much with the current crop of students, and not many who pass out register to the alumni group the management of the alumni group are basically from 1970s and 1980s which was long before the college became NIT seniors generally remain in touch with juniors they personally know.

Exam Structure

We had semester exams with a portion of marks coming from attendance and class tests (30%) the lab tests were separate, and carried individual credit points overall, in a semester there were around 6 theory exams, 4 lab tests and 12 class tests.

Faculty

3

The faculty for the newer departments like Electronics, Information Technology and Computer Science barely had proper faculty most of the professors were college alumni from a very different background and most of them were going through their own MTech a

Studentsbecome eligible for placements from 7th semester. Various companies such as TCS, Infosys, Accenture, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Godrej, etc. come for placements. Earlier many offers used to come however in the recent years the number of offers made have reduced significantly. highest package comes around 10 to 11 lakhs per annum with average being 4-5 lakhs per annum. I have kept my options open after completion of degree in doing further studies that is Mtech or getting into a job whichever seems appropriate at the situation.

Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
