Is doing B.Tech Software Engineering from DTU any good?

Doing B.Tech in Software Engineering from DTU has been a solid experience for me. The curriculum is really good, and they have implemented the NEP, which keeps our courses up to date. I love how we can choose electives right from the first semester! Also, the opportunities for internships start from the first year itself, which is pretty impressive. Companies like Google and Apple come to recruit, and it’s great to see so many options. I’m aiming for a CGPA above 7.5 to secure a good internship by my third year. Plus, the campus life is vibrant with tons of fests happening throughout the year, making it a fun place to study!

This is a slightly different perspective than what has already been shared.

Software Engineering at DTU is essentially a rebranded version of Computer Science. The courses are nearly identical, and any differences that do exist (up to the second year) are largely insignificant. The faculty includes a couple of really good professors, and some are engaged in active research with a few publications. However, that doesn’t necessarily make it easier to work with them. You’ll need to put in the same effort as you would anywhere else, but the work might be more meaningful. Unfortunately, classroom teaching can be quite ineffective, similar to many other branches. Some professors even make you sit through an hour of lectures just to test your patience. Yes, there are professors who intentionally do that.

The branch itself holds good value abroad, especially if you can develop specialized skill sets that align with certain companies in the USA. Many new companies are open to hiring graduates from Indian universities beyond just the IITs.

You will have a decent amount of time to pursue your interests and explore different areas. It will be a valuable experience!

The first batch started in 2009, and they secured the highest placement packages of 60 lakhs a year! However, that shouldn’t be the sole focus. The program is 90% similar to Computer Engineering. To maintain a reasonable student-teacher ratio, a new branch called Software Engineering was created.

Honestly, the quality of faculty isn't impressive, with only a few standout teachers. The better instructors typically come from the higher cut-off CS students. Some faculty members barely attend 3-4 classes throughout the semester, and I've seen this trend every semester.

The labs are equipped with fairly modern PCs. For internships, it's best to apply directly to companies, as there’s no shortage of IT and software firms these days. When it comes to research, you’ll need to take the initiative—approach professors, get necessary permissions, etc. If you’re passionate, you’ll find a way to achieve your goals.

Additionally, various clubs are available to help you enhance your skills beyond the classroom. Workshops on the latest advancements, like Android app development and hacking, are quite common. If you enjoy the subject, you’ll do well!

Honestly, pursuing B.Tech Software Engineering at DTU has its perks. The placement scene is decent, but it really boils down to your individual skills. Those who can code well and have strong projects get placed in top MNCs without much hassle. They say you need to maintain a CGPA of 7.5 to be eligible for internships, and I think that’s fair. The fees are around 2.19 lakhs, which increases slightly each year, but there are scholarships available, especially for EWS students. The campus vibe is also fantastic. Joining societies helped me connect with seniors and make friends beyond the classroom.

SE branch is excellent at DTU and provides many placements, internship, and research opportunities, comparable to what COE or IT students receive.

Between SE and ECE:

• These branches are very different.
• It's not just Computer Engineering vs Software Engineering.
• You can easily assess your interest here.

Many students who were aiming for COE choose ECE because they are passionate about Electronics. So, go for your passion! A student who is genuinely interested in Electronics will likely earn better than an SE student who lacks interest in their subject.
