Is it worth doing a B.Tech Environmental Engineering from DTU or not? What are its placement records and whats your experience with this college so far?

Not many colleges in India offer Environmental Engineering. After 2–3 IITs, DTU ranks next in line for this course.

Placement Scene:

• Number of offers in 2017–18: 29 (Batch strength is around 50)
• Government job options: DMRC, CPCB, DPCC, DJB, Coal India, GSEC, etc.
• For non-core (coding-related) jobs, one needs to be extraordinary.
• Non-tech jobs: Branch doesn’t matter for that. Many non-tech companies visit DTU every year.

Perks:

• DTU/DCE brand name on your CV and all the general perks associated with DTU!
• Environment is becoming a hot topic worldwide due to issues like global warming, water scarcity, waste management, etc.
• A small batch size means less competition.

Minuses:

• Core jobs are limited, and there is only one tech society for Environmental Engineering in the college: https://www.linkedin.com/company/society-for-civil-and-environmental-engineers-dtu.
• This society has only begun showing some activity in the past year, despite being one of the oldest tech societies in the college.
• Relatively unknown branch.

I’m currently pursuing B.Tech Environmental Engineering at DTU, and I’d say it has its pros and cons. The curriculum is decent but doesn’t fully meet industrial needs. You really have to dive deep into your subjects if you want to excel in this field. Placement-wise, it’s pretty good! Many companies visit, and while the highest packages can go into crores, you need to have the right skills to get noticed. Also, keep in mind that internships are a bit tough to come by this year due to the recession, but there are research opportunities that can be valuable.

Doing a B.Tech in Environmental Engineering from DTU is definitely worth it! The campus life is amazing, with no ragging and helpful seniors. The faculty are qualified, but honestly, you can't just rely on them for everything. You have to be proactive in your studies. The placement records are good; over 300 companies come for recruitment, and students can secure decent packages. I’ve noticed that those who are skilled and prepared tend to do well. Plus, the environment is vibrant with fests like Engifest, which makes college life a lot more fun!

Answer Updated on 25th July 2020, documenting experiences over another year at DTU. This answer covers why Environmental Engineering or any other lower branch at DTU/NSUT can be better than CS at top IP colleges/USICT and JIIT. This branch is rare, offered only in 2–3 IITs and DTU. While it may not provide an edge in placements, it can be beneficial for pursuing an MBA in India or an MS abroad (less competition). The subjects include waste management, various types of pollution, etc. You can find the syllabus on the DTU website.

Scope in Environmental Engineering: Very limited (less than 20 core recruiters for this branch). There’s great scope in non-tech roles, and if you can code and outperform COE students, then there’s good scope in tech as well.

• Majority of offers in Consulting/Analytics
• Highest international offer: 23L (No international packages in IP)
• Highest domestic offer: 12L (IP this year had 12–13L highest packages)
• Average should be around 5–5.5L (In IP, most companies are mass recruiters with packages around 4L).

Is it worth doing B.Tech Environmental Engineering from DTU? Absolutely! The college has a great atmosphere and tons of extracurricular activities. The fees are around 2,29,000 for the first year, which is a bit steep but worth it for the experience. Placement records are solid with around 300 companies visiting for recruitment. The highest packages are impressive, though you have to work hard to secure them. The curriculum needs some updates, but studying independently can really help you in the long run. Overall, I’m enjoying my time here and feel optimistic about my future!
