Is doing B.Tech Civil Engineering from DTU any good?

I chose DTU for my B.Tech in Civil Engineering because I wanted a hands-on experience in the construction industry. The curriculum is quite relevant, but I do wish there was more focus on practical applications. The faculty is helpful, though, and they do provide good resources for our studies. When it comes to internships, the college has partnerships with companies like Amazon and Reliance, so there are decent opportunities with stipends around 10k. For placements, I’ve seen that around 89 seats were filled last year from our class of 140, with good offers coming in. Overall, I think DTU is a solid choice for civil engineering.

Civil Engineering at DTU is regarded as a solid choice for several reasons:

• Easy syllabus - Scoring well is quite achievable, which can help secure admission into IIMs and give an advantage in non-core companies compared to students from other branches.
• Brilliant Government Jobs - You can take the IES/GATE examination and land some of the best jobs in the country.
• Decent placement record - Civil Engineers typically have a good placement track record. With a strong percentage and decent communication skills, you can expect a package between 5-7 lakhs.
• MS from Stanford - Civil and environmental engineers have the opportunity to pursue an MS in environmental engineering from Stanford, facing much less competition than in computer science.

While you may not match the pay scales of computer science students, a government job in civil engineering can offer a comfortable and fulfilling life in the long run. Additionally, there is no option for branch upgradation at DTU, so you will need to commit to civil engineering if it isn’t upgraded before the spot round.

I’m really enjoying my B.Tech in Civil Engineering at DTU. The curriculum focuses a lot on practical skills, which I appreciate since I prefer fieldwork over sitting in an office. While there’s a lot of theory, the faculty is dedicated and helps us understand how to apply our knowledge in real-world scenarios. For internships, there are great companies that visit, and I’ve heard about stipends reaching 10k. The placement stats look encouraging too—last year, around 25 companies visited, offering a good number of roles with packages between 35,000 to 90,000, which is not bad at all!

I wasn't initially sure about this branch, which is why I chose Engineering Physics. The syllabus is quite similar to ECE in some ways. But if you’re heading to DTU, here’s what you need to know:

• Civil Engineering is a core branch.
• DTU is a Tier-1 college, so you can expect a decent starting salary of around 5–7 lakhs p.a.
• Engineering Physics also offers packages in a similar range.

So, prioritize and choose the branch based on your interests!
