How is the first year in DTU like??

DTU has been an eye-opener for me in my first year. I chose this college because of its academic standing in Delhi and my childhood fascination with economics. With around 2000 students and a decent faculty of 70 teachers, it feels lively. The curriculum is quite engaging but I’ve noticed that the economics papers are not the easiest to pass. The midterm exams come up fast, which keeps us on our toes. I’m also looking forward to the Engifest; I hear it’s one of the biggest events in Delhi! Plus, I’m hoping to secure an internship soon since many startups are coming for placements. The journey is just beginning!

To all the freshers out there, Welcome to DTU!! :)

Okay. Here are some tips I can share:

• First of all, never ever listen to those seniors who say “Marks se koi farak nahi padta yaar! Chill maar!!” (Marks don’t matter at all! Just chill!). Because, when it comes to Placements, Marks do matter a lot. High profile companies usually keep a cut-off around 70% and above. There’s no point in regretting later. You won’t be allowed to sit for placements if you don’t have enough marks. Sad truth.
• Explore!! Explore your interests. There are a plethora of societies working in DTU. Join whichever you like. Attend their orientations to learn about them. You will hardly get any time in 3rd and 4th year to join societies due to the workload of internships and placements. So, do try them in your 1st and 2nd years. And yes! You can mention them in your resume as well. Overall, it will contribute to your growth. Do join some. (This is tough for day scholars, as societies are active only after 5 pm in college and workshops happen on weekends.)
• In DTU, there’s one rule: “Every junior is supposed to call their seniors by Sir/Mam.” I don’t know why it is so, but it is. Keep this in mind :D (Btw, DTU is a ragging-free campus!)

My first year at DTU has been quite an experience! I chose this college for its reputation in Delhi and my interest in economics and history. The east campus is bustling with around 2000 students, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know people from different branches. The faculty is impressive too, with about 70 teachers, many of whom are guest faculty from universities like JNU. The classes are rigorous, especially in economics, but I find that challenging in a good way. The midterms came up pretty quickly, just two months into the semester. I’m looking forward to the upcoming fests, especially Engifest, which seems to be a big deal!

I can’t stress enough how crucial CGPA is for campus placements, pursuing MS/MBA abroad, or any academic path. Your CGPA holds significant weight, so don’t ignore your declining grades in the first year. However, remember that college life is about more than just CGPA. Aim to maintain a GPA above 8, and you’ll be in a good spot.

• Don’t join societies just for certificates or positions of responsibility (POR). Join them if you genuinely want to. They don’t add much to your CV, but the experiences and guidance from seniors will be invaluable.
• Avoid enrolling in Coding Blocks/Ninjas just because your friends are doing it. Recognize the difference between peer pressure and your own interests. This is key to managing college, as your decisions will often be swayed by friends, family, and seniors.
• Procrastination can consume your entire college life. Don’t fall into its trap. Manage your time wisely and prioritize effectively.
• Make friends, but also learn to spot toxic individuals. If you feel demotivated, stressed, sad, or angry after interacting with certain people, that’s a red flag. It’s wise to distance yourself from them.

There are a plethora of societies at DTU (close to 100). It's common for many of these societies to make exaggerated claims regarding placements, opportunities, and so on (especially concerning unofficial freshers' parties). So, for newcomers, it might be tempting to join the most eye-catching society and overlook academics.

So here we go:

• Ask yourself a fundamental question: What was your motive for joining DTU? Obviously, academics! Don’t neglect your studies. This is your primary reason for being in college. Focus on achieving a decent GPA first.
• As mentioned, with so many societies, find one that aligns with your interests. But please don’t forget point 1! :p
• Explore your college to the fullest. DTU boasts one of the most beautiful campuses among Delhi colleges.
• Networking: Engage with different people, whether they’re classmates or seniors (but don’t follow them blindly). Expand your network!
• Besides academics, learn a skill relevant to any industry. Trust me, by the time you graduate, this will set your profile apart from the crowd.

Last but not least, enjoy your first year to the fullest! Create some unforgettable memories!
