Should I choose DTU over low ranked NITs?

DTU, formerly known as DCE, is one of the top engineering institutes in India with a rich legacy. The brand name “DCE” carries significant weight. Here are the reasons to choose DTU over low-ranked NITs:

• Location: DTU is situated in Delhi, a tier 1 city, providing access to a vibrant environment, cultural activities, and numerous opportunities across various industries. While top NITs are located in tier 2 cities, Delhi is a much better option for many.
• Placements: DTU has a slight advantage in CS-related placements compared to any NITs. In 2020, the average package for CS-related branches was between 18–20 lakhs, with a placement percentage of 93–94%. The top 3 NITs had similar average packages of around 18–20 lakhs, but the context matters. DTU had over 700 seats for CS-related branches, and maintaining an average of 18–20 lakhs with a 93% placement rate is impressive, especially compared to top NITs that had only 150-200 seats in CS.
• Facilities: When it comes to architecture and facilities, DTU stands out. It offers startup and incubation facilities. Out of the 100 unicorn startups in India, 10 unicorn startups have roots in DTU.

I was torn between DTU and some lower-ranked NITs, but I went with DTU, and I’m glad I did! The curriculum in my economics course is quite challenging yet rewarding. The professors are knowledgeable, and we have all the necessary resources at our disposal. While the average placement is around 5 LPA, I’ve seen some of my seniors land jobs with companies like Bajaj and Byjus. Also, the vibrant campus life and events like Engifest make the overall experience worthwhile. If you’re looking for a decent college experience with solid teaching, DTU is definitely a good choice.

Honestly, I believe choosing DTU for my course was a smart move. The faculty is well-qualified, with many guest teachers having over 15 years of experience. The campus life is lively, and events like Engifest really add to the experience. Sure, the average package is around 5 LPA, which isn't mind-blowing, but companies like Amazon and Mckinley Rise do recruit. The fee structure is a bit higher than some other Delhi colleges, but I think the quality of education justifies it. If you’re aiming for a good MBA later, DTU might give you a better foundation than a low-ranked NIT.

As a recent graduate from DTU, I feel qualified to tackle this question.

Let me clarify: I’m not claiming that DTU is superior to all NITs. Many NITs outperform DTU in various areas like academics, brand recognition, campus facilities, extracurriculars, etc. That’s a fact.

However, what made DTU appealing to me was the comprehensive package of facilities it offers, including the chance to explore different interests.

When I started as an engineering student at NIT Kurukshetra, the focus was heavily on academics, leaving little room for exploration. As someone who entered engineering without a clear interest in a specific field and chose a branch based on rank, this lack of opportunity to explore was a setback. In contrast, DTU encourages exploration.

Don’t mistake this for saying that competition at DTU is easy. There are many talented students, and if you want to excel and be at the top of your class, you’ll need to put in the effort!

Choosing DTU over a lower-ranked NIT was an easy decision for me. I'm studying Economics and History here, and the faculty is impressive. We have around 30 permanent teachers and many guest lecturers who are JNU PhD scholars. The environment is vibrant with about 2000 students, and the curriculum is engaging.

Even though placements can be a bit competitive, companies like Bajaj and Byjus visit for recruitment. Plus, the campus life is fun, especially during Engifest. Overall, I feel DTU offers a solid combination of education and opportunities that lower-ranked NITs might struggle to match.
