Mangalore University’s Humanities Courses Receive Single-Digit Admissions: Read Details Here

Mangalore University’s Mangalagangothri campus has received less than 10 admissions this year for some humanities and social science courses. The varsity is most likely to extend the admission season to get more students to join the campus. 

The courses at Mangalore University that have witnessed admissions in higher single digits are sociology, history, and political science. While, mass communication journalism has the lowest admissions, with only five students enrolling for the course.

The officials stated that the prime reason for the drop in admissions this year is because more affiliated colleges are providing post-graduate courses on par with the campus. Thus students prefer colleges near to their homes rather than choosing for the campus. 

The other reason behind lesser enrollments is that some Mangalagangothri campus departments have no permanent faculty, and highly depend on Guest lecturers.

As per the media reports, University Registrar (evaluation) PL Dharma informed that the university will extend admissions for some courses. 

“The campus has to fill 50% of vacancies and one department has only guest faculties. The admission is likely to go up if we address these shortcomings,” he further stated.

B Udaya, Professor of history and dean of faculty of arts, revealed that the courses that have received lesser admissions were in high demand in the past few years.

He added, “To support higher education in rural areas, the government allowed the opening of PG centers. The move -- good, no doubt -- has cut into university admissions.” 

Apart from this, some senior professors mentioned that candidates do due diligence on the varsity, syllabus, and student amenities before getting admission. 

Additionally, the institute has not updated the syllabi of most of the programs. While some departments have less experienced faculty; others are involved in controversies. A professor added that the system might fail to attract students this year.
