Being a Faculty of the Mysore Royal Institute of Technology, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

As the Head of Electronics and Communication Engineering, my duties lie in the competent delivery of all subjects, document preparation, and maintenance pertaining to their subjects. I also need to take care of monitoring student performance and identifying their abilities; based on that, extra support will be given. I make sure to provide opportunities for individual student development by sending them to attend inter-college competitions, conferences, and workshops. Other responsibilities include providing appropriate guidance regarding resources, monitoring staff performance and appraisals of teaching staff, providing opportunities for individual staff development by sending them to attend FDPs and workshops, and providing appropriate guidance and resources to support all teaching undertaken by the departments.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

We put in a lot of work to have good relationships with the students and faculty members. We spend one on one time with the students, understand their issues, and try to solve them. We try to genuinely develop an Interest in their interests. I make sure I share my stories and try to infuse humour into the conversations.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?

We bring a practical aspect to our courses through project-based learning. Students get to practise what they learn and put their skills to use through these projects. We have established industry collaborations and partnerships for internships and industrial training sessions. A majority of the curriculum is completed in the laboratory. We also have industry-focused assignments and case studies. Occasionally, we welcome guest lectures and industry experts, and we also take our students on industry visits and field trips. Besides the core subjects, we have several professional development programmes and certifications. Our curriculum is industry-guided and it goes through continuous industry feedback and updates. By implementing these strategies, institutes and departments can infuse practicality and industry relevance into the subjects, preparing students for the challenges and expectations of the professional world.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

We try to get our students to be more engaged in the classroom. Engagement happens when students care about the material, feel welcome in the classroom, understand expectations, and have fun. Students are also more likely to achieve their learning goals. We craft lessons that will engage all students and get them ready and willing to learn the lessons.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students?

Hospitality programs typically are a mix of theoretical in-class study and practical training in specially designed laboratories that mimic the departments of a hotel, such as the front office, housekeeping, food and beverage service, and food production. Our curriculum ensures to deliver the same, keeping intact the best practises. Industry experts further supplement classroom learning with unique insights during guest lectures. The curriculum sees progressive upgrades once every six months and reflects changes in the hospitality and travel environments.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

The world is a complicated place. Students are constantly pitted against one another, and they are expected to give their best at all times. Students are naturally competitive, which is fine as long as the school competition is productive. While it is important to maintain that competitive spirit, it is also necessary to tell them where the line is. You should not just encourage your students to compete but also teach them how to deal with competition. This will help students grow in any type of competitive environment.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to the real-world challenges?
