Dr. Sumit Chauhan, a distinction holder in many subjects, has 21 years of experience in teaching and is a courseware designer. He is among the first postgraduates in Masters of Computer Application from GGS Indraprastha University, New Delhi. Dr. Chauhan has authored 3 books “An Introduction to Computer Graphics”, “Programming in C using Linux” and “Internet Of Things”, 1 Chapter in a National Edited Book and many online tutorials. He has also published 20 research papers in various national and international journals. He has also organised 25 National/International seminars and conferences and also attended over 20 National/International conferences/seminars. At present, he is working as an Associate Professor and Examination Head at the Management Education Research Institute, GGSIP University, New Delhi. He has done his PhD in Computer Science and his area of interest includes Computer Graphics, Linux Operating System, Database Management System, and Web Technologies.

You have held key positions at MERI throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
Growing up with family members who were educators, I had firsthand exposure to the positive impact teachers can have on students' lives. Their dedication and commitment serve as role models, inspiring me to follow in their footsteps. Teaching gives me a deep sense of internal satisfaction. Knowing that you are contributing to the growth and development of individuals, and by extension, your society and nation, is a source of immense fulfilment.
What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
I value the legacy and tradition of education in my family and am motivated to carry it forward. I view education as a means of contributing to the betterment of society and nation-building. Given my love for imparting knowledge, my leadership style includes a strong element of mentorship. I guide and mentor my students, helping them achieve their full potential. As education is a dynamic field, I also involve adaptability and innovation. I am open to new teaching methodologies and approaches to meet the evolving needs of my students and the education sector.
How does the college handle cases of academic misconduct or exam irregularities?
We, as an institute, take cases of academic misconduct or exam irregularities very seriously. As we know, handling these types of cases is crucial for maintaining the integrity and reputation of a college. We maintain well-defined academic integrity policies and codes of conduct. Moreover, we also ensure that these policies are easily accessible to all students and faculty members. We educate students about the importance of academic integrity and the consequences of academic misconduct and ensure that faculty members are also aware of the policies and procedures for reporting and addressing academic misconduct. We take preventive measures like designing exams and assessments that are less prone to cheating, such as randomized questions, time limits, and open-book formats that require critical thinking. We have a committee of senior professors to investigate academic misconduct cases.

Can you describe any recent changes or improvements made to the examination process at the college?
One of MERI college's notable features is its transparent internal assessment mechanism. The institution has introduced a unique concept of evaluating random answer sheets. This approach ensures that assessment is not predictable or biased, as it requires faculty members to evaluate answer sheets without prior knowledge of the student's identity. This practice fosters fairness and objectivity in grading, contributing to the overall credibility of the assessment process. Furthermore, the introduction of common papers for all sections, where more than one faculty member is involved, is a testament to the college's commitment to transparency. Common papers help eliminate potential biases that may arise when a single faculty member assesses a particular section. Multiple evaluators bring diverse perspectives, reducing the likelihood of subjective judgment and favoritism. This approach ensures that all students are evaluated against the same standards, regardless of the section they belong to, promoting fairness and equality.

I also provide constructive feedback on assignments, projects, and exams, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. I also keep assessment transparency and fairness to build trust in the grading process.
