  • There is only one campus for the technical faculty, and it is fairly equipped. There is a student dorm on the campus itself. The student council of the technical faculty and the tutors of the student dorm organize various extracurricular activities throughout the year. Apart from this, other faculties at the University of Freiburg and SWFR will also organize various events.
  • There is a library at the technical faculty, but there is also a big library in the city centre. There are Fraunhofer research institutes near the campus, which are a good source of potential student jobs and careers.

  • There is SWFR, which offers the student dorms, and the primary source of accommodation is this. You have to apply on their online portal. You can also use WG gesucht, eBay Kleinanzeigen to look for private housing. Monthly rent depends on the type of accommodation.
  • If it is a student dorm, it is somewhere between 300 - 450 euros, and private will be higher. All the necessary facilities will be there for student housing, including the costs for electricity and heating.

  • The entire town of Freiburg is surrounded by the university, which has campuses spread across the town. There are libraries with built-in cafeterias, game rooms, silent rooms, computer labs and televisions for group studies.
  • There are soccer fields, hockey fields, volleyball courts, table tennis tables, and party rooms for you to rent and play as part of the university team. The university arranges for enough cultural events with DJ sets or dance parties to welcome all the international students as well.

  • Initially, when I went to Germany for the first time, I was staying in a private house where I had to do everything on my own. The rent was pretty high, but getting a single accommodation for your entire stay during the entire course is practically impossible. I, myself, have changed houses around 4-5 times, rented houses, and stayed in student dorms.
  • The application process to student dorms is based on a lottery system. Every house has 4 -6 students staying together with a common kitchen and 2 bathrooms. All the duties are distributed among each other.

  • Online platforms : I primarily used websites like WG-Gesucht.de, Studierendenwerk Freiburg (official student service), and Immobilienscout24. I have joined several Facebook groups like "WG Zimmer in Freiburg" and "Freiburg Housing/Accommodation", where people post available rooms. I also checked local WhatsApp groups and notice groups around the university and student cafes, which sometimes have postings for available rooms or roommates.
  • Challenges Faced : There is a huge demand for housing, especially before the semester starts. Places get taken really quickly, and landlords often get 30-40 applications per room. Many listings are in German, and some landlords prefer German-speaking tenants. The Studierendenwerk housing is affordable but limited, so I ended up on a waiting list.
  • Recommendations: Begin house search at least 2-3 months before the semester commences Early enrollment with Studierendenwerk Freiburg as their dorms are cheaper Create strong and polite profile in WG-Gesucht.de mentioning your lifestyle and hobbies Beware of scams Try considering Temporary options.

  • There is a team called Fachschaft that conducts extracurricular activities. There are events with music and food. Also, there are many technical events held to make students aware of the current market, trends and projects.
  • There are two groups, ICM and APIS, that engage international students with different free events like hikes, knowing different cities and other fun events. APIS also provides free German courses.

  • Apply to SWFR housing, which provides student dorms, first. In case this does not work out, we need to check postings on online platforms like WG Gesucht and apply for them. There are a few dormitories that can be applied to individually.
  • An accommodation crisis exists and in case we don't get proper accommodation, people have to resort to costly private housing or cheaper housing on the outskirts of the city. Each dorm is given for 6 months to 1 year, after which extension is based on luck. So house finding can be a bit stressful, especially around exams. Suggestions. Be active and send emails to all possible dorms. Check genuine WhatsApp or Instagram groups that provide sublets until a permanent accommodation is obtained.

  • The campuses that university has are distributed throughout Freiburg, the technical faculty is in one place, which has all the engineering courses, other places have law, medical, geology, teaching, music, etc.
  • The university has a very big library in the city centre, and also there is a small one for the technical faculty; we can use both of them. The university also offers gym and some sports activities, I don't know many details about it, as I'm not involved in it

  • Right now the German job market is not the best, so many students are not getting job opportunities after graduation, so master's students are starting with PhDs. As per my knowledge, very few students are getting jobs within the first 6 months of graduation.
  • Students find jobs from various career portals of private firms.
  • The starting salary is around 2800-3500 Euros per month if students start working in organization. Also, knowing German language is very important for landing a job.

The university has a number of campuses for bio, economics, etc, which are located in different areas of Freiburg. The library is very huge and is always crowded. You can find events, study tours, and workshops happening on your website, which cost around 0-40 euros. Each year, the university hosts a technical fest during the summer, offering food and beverages for which you can volunteer as well.

  • You can search for accommodation through platforms like WG Gesucht, immowelt/immoscout.You have to send a message covering who you are as a person, what are your habits, and what you like. Usually, you get a response if you message them in German and provide financial proof like Schufa assuring you can pay rent on time.
  • As a student, you can approach the student desk, which will also assist you in finding accommodation. You can join Indian groups on Telegram/WhatsApp/Facebook, where you also find lots of sublet options as well.

It's not easy to find accommodation in Freiburg. The rents range from 250 to 450 for student apartments. The prices have increased recently due to the energy crisis. A personal example; I live in an apartment with 4 people with individual bedrooms, a common kitchen and two bathrooms for 380 euros per month in an apartment complex owned by the student union, which is hard to get.
