University of Konstanz admissions run on a dual-cycle calendar, with winter (October start) carrying most master’s and bachelor’s seats and summer (April start) opening a smaller slate. The university sets a Bachelor’s with 60 percent or higher in a relevant subject for most Master’s entries, and Class XII of 60 percent or higher for Bachelor’s streams, with English-taught programmes layering an IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 floor on top.

  • Next primary intake deadline: Winter Semester 2027/28 master’s applications open 1 March 2027 via ZEuS, with 15 June 2027 for admission-restricted courses and 15 July 2027 for admission-free.
  • Base tuition and fee: €1,500 per semester (around ₹1.65 Lakhs) for non-EU first-degree students, with no application fee for master’s via ZEuS and a €75 (around ₹8,259) uni-assist VPD for bachelor’s.
  • Eligibility floor: Bachelor’s degree at 60 percent or higher for master’s entry, Class XII at 60 percent or higher for bachelor’s entry, plus IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 for English-taught streams.
  • Acceptance rate: estimated at 30 to 40 percent, based on moderately selective German research university patterns, as the university does not publish an official institutional figure.

Indian applicants most often target the English-taught Computer and Information Science, Social and Economic Data Science, and Economics master’s at University of Konstanz, with student feedback consistently praising the small cohort sizes, lakeside campus, and direct faculty access that come with its research-university setup.

Admission Status: Open. The Summer Semester 2027 cycle is live now, with master’s admission-restricted applications due 15 January 2027 and admission-free due 15 March 2027 through the ZEuS portal. The primary Winter Semester 2027/28 cycle opens on 1 March 2027 and runs to 15 June 2027 (admission-restricted) and 15 July 2027 (admission-free) for master’s. There is no application fee for master’s applicants via ZEuS. Bachelor’s applicants additionally need a Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist, which costs €75 (around ₹8,259).

University of Konstanz Eligibility for Indian Students

University of Konstanz works on a two-step eligibility test for Indian applicants. Step one is an academic equivalence check that converts your Indian degree into a German-recognised qualification. Step two is a programme-level check for subject fit, grades, and English or German proficiency.

  • Master’s academic floor: three or four-year Bachelor’s at 60 to 65 percent or higher in a related subject, from a recognised Indian university.
  • Bachelor’s academic floor: Class XII at 60 percent or higher, plus one year of recognised Indian undergraduate study for most streams, since Indian Class XII alone does not match German Abitur.
  • English (English-taught streams): IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, Cambridge C1 Advanced, or Duolingo English Test 110 for select programmes.
  • German (German-taught streams): DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 across all four skills for most bachelor’s and some master’s.
  • Programme-specific: Computer and Information Science Master’s expects a strong undergraduate computer science background and uses a points system on grade, subject fit, motivation, and extracurriculars.

University of Konstanz English Test Equivalents

The university accepts multiple English certificates. Scores sit in a tight band across most English-taught master’s.

TestMinimum ScoreNotes
IELTS Academic6.0 to 6.5No band below 6.0
TOEFL iBT90Minimum 20 in each section
Cambridge C1 AdvancedGrade CAccepted for most programmes
Duolingo English Test110Programme-specific acceptance

University of Konstanz does not publish a general Medium of Instruction waiver for Indian applicants. Only four or more subject-level English courses from EEA or Switzerland, or a prior degree from an English-speaking country, waive the test. Indian Bachelor’s degrees in English are not accepted as a waiver.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Konstanz study pages for your chosen program before applying.

University of Konstanz Master’s Programs for Indian Students

University of Konstanz runs 33 master’s programmes across the Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, and Faculty of Politics, Law and Economics. Around 20 of these have English or dual-language tracks that Indian students pick most often. Base tuition sits at €1,500 per semester (around ₹1.65 Lakhs) for non-EU students, with the full course-wise fees breakdown on our fees page.

Insider note: Konstanz runs an access-oriented points-based review for most master’s. The committee weighs final grade, subject fit, motivation letter, and additional subject-related activities (publications, internships, research assistantships) rather than a hard CGPA cut-off, so a 65 percent Bachelor’s with strong research exposure can beat a 72 percent one with none.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Konstanz programme page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Konstanz Bachelor’s Programs for Indian Students

Bachelor’s programmes at University of Konstanz are predominantly German-taught. Indian students need to clear DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 alongside the Indian Class XII equivalence. The university lists 27 main-subject Bachelor’s plus 18 minor-subject options.

Indian Class XII alone does not match the German Abitur. Most applicants complete one year of a recognised Indian Bachelor’s degree first, then apply via ZEuS with a uni-assist VPD. The VPD is a Preliminary Review Documentation that converts your Indian academic record into a German-grade equivalent.

Before you apply: If your Indian academic record is still being converted by uni-assist, start the VPD process at least 10 weeks before the ZEuS deadline. Bachelor’s VPDs cost €75 (around ₹8,259) for the first programme and €30 (around ₹3,304) for each additional.

University of Konstanz PhD Admissions for Indian Students

University of Konstanz runs PhDs through faculty-direct supervision. There is no central PhD intake deadline. Indian candidates reach out to a supervisor first, agree on a project, and then enrol as a doctoral candidate through the Konstanz Research School. Most doctoral positions are funded, paying per DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) pay scale rates.

University of Konstanz PhD Application Steps

  • Identify a supervisor whose research matches your proposal. Faculty pages list research groups.
  • Email the supervisor with your CV, Master’s transcripts, and a two-page research outline.
  • Once a supervisor accepts, submit the doctoral enrolment application with proof of a Master’s degree.
  • Register formally with the Konstanz Research School (KRS) after enrolment.

University of Konstanz PhD Funding for Indian Students

Konstanz follows DFG rules for PhD payment. Funded positions typically pay 65 to 100 percent of a TV-L E13 scale, which works out to around €2,500 to €3,500 per month gross (₹2.75 to ₹3.85 Lakhs). The Konstanz Research School runs an internal travel grant pool for conferences and research stays. DAAD scholarships of around €1,000 per month (around ₹1.10 Lakhs) are also open to Indian doctoral candidates for one to three months.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Konstanz Research School page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Konstanz Application Process via ZEuS

University of Konstanz runs all applications through its own portal, ZEuS, at zeus.uni-konstanz.de. There is no central platform like uni-assist for master’s. Bachelor’s applicants file through ZEuS too, but they must attach a uni-assist VPD alongside their application.

  1. Register on ZEuS at zeus.uni-konstanz.de once applications open on 1 March 2027 for Winter Semester 2027/28.
  2. Pick up to three programmes. ZEuS lets you file parallel applications.
  3. Upload scanned academic certificates, English or German test scores, CV, motivation letter, and two LORs.
  4. For bachelor’s: separately apply to uni-assist for a VPD and pay the application fee of €75 (around ₹8,259) via credit card or bank transfer. Attach the VPD once issued.
  5. Submit the ZEuS application before the programme’s cut-off. Late uploads auto-reject.
  6. Monitor ZEuS for the admission decision. Decisions come six to ten weeks after the deadline.

Master’s applicants pay no application fee on ZEuS. The portal remains the single point of contact for status updates, offer letters, and enrolment forms.

University of Konstanz Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Decisions at University of Konstanz follow a predictable rhythm tied to the ZEuS cycle. For Winter Semester 2027/28 master’s applications filed by 15 June or 15 July 2027, Indian applicants typically hear back between late July and early September 2027.

  • Admission letter: uploaded to ZEuS once the committee review closes. You receive an email alert.
  • Acceptance window: accept the offer via ZEuS within two to three weeks. Missing the window releases the seat.
  • Conditional offers: often require pending transcripts, final degree certificate, or a confirmed IELTS or TOEFL score by a stated date.
  • Deferral policy: deferrals are not standard. Rejected applicants or those who miss acceptance usually reapply in the next cycle.
  • Enrolment: after accepting, send original or certified copies by courier to the Department of Studies and Teaching to complete Immatrikulation.

University of Konstanz Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Documents for University of Konstanz split into academic, language, and personal categories. Indian applicants upload scans to ZEuS at the application stage, then courier originals or notarised copies on admission.

  • Passport: valid for at least 15 months beyond the planned start date.
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets: for bachelor’s applicants only.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet: for master’s applicants. Required in English, with notarised translation if the original is in a regional language.
  • English or German test score report: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, DSH, or TestDaF, uploaded as PDF.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): one to two pages, programme-specific.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (LORs): from academic or research referees.
  • Curriculum Vitae: European format preferred.
  • Proof of financial means: for the visa stage, around €11,904 per year in a blocked account (around ₹13.11 Lakhs).
  • uni-assist VPD: for bachelor’s applicants only.
  • APS Certificate: mandatory for Indian applicants from 1 November 2022 onwards. The Akademische Prüfstelle at the German Embassy in Delhi verifies your Indian academic record before you file with ZEuS.

University of Konstanz Acceptance Rate and Selectivity

University of Konstanz does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. The university sits in the 251-300 THE World band and QS 425 for 2027, with a strong ranking band in Political Sciences (ARWU GRAS global rank 15, Germany rank 1).

Based on Konstanz’s moderately selective positioning, admission-restricted master’s such as Economics and Social and Economic Data Science run around 25 to 35 percent, while admission-free master’s such as Computer and Information Science are closer to 40 to 50 percent for Indian applicants who clear the subject-fit screen.

University of Konstanz Selectivity by Programme Family

Admission odds move with programme category.

  • Admission-restricted master’s: harder, with committee-reviewed shortlists and English score cut-offs that run above the posted minimum in practice.
  • Admission-free master’s: admissions check minimum eligibility first, with no capacity cap, so a complete file that meets the threshold usually clears.
  • Bachelor’s: depends on the VPD-equivalent German grade and English or German proficiency. A VPD grade of 2.5 or better reads as competitive.

University of Konstanz Indian Student Volume

Konstanz enrols around 772 international students across all levels, roughly 7 percent of the 11,200 total student body. Indian students sit inside this cohort, with the heaviest cluster in Computer and Information Science, Economics, and Life Sciences master’s.

Germany Student Visa Process for University of Konstanz Applicants

Indian applicants admitted to University of Konstanz apply for a German National Visa for study purposes (D-Visa) at the German Mission in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru). The visa covers stays longer than 90 days and converts into a residence permit after you register in Konstanz.

You apply after the ZEuS admission letter arrives. Processing takes six to twelve weeks, so book a visa appointment within one week of accepting the offer. Mandatory documents include the Konstanz admission letter, proof of financial means (blocked account of around €11,904 or ₹13.11 Lakhs), health insurance, APS certificate, and valid passport. Within two weeks of arrival in Konstanz, register at the Bürgeramt (Residents’ Registration Office) and apply for the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde.

2026 update: From 1 September 2024, the blocked account minimum for Germany is €11,904 per year. Factor this plus the €1,500 per semester tuition (around ₹1.65 Lakhs) and €175 semester contribution (around ₹19,271) into your financial proof.

University of Konstanz Admissions Tips and Checklist

The following tips and steps draw on Indian-applicant patterns at University of Konstanz across recent intakes.

  • Target the primary winter intake: apply by 15 June 2027 for admission-restricted master’s. The summer intake carries fewer programmes.
  • Book the APS slot 12 weeks ahead: APS verification at the German Embassy in Delhi runs on fixed slots and routinely runs out during peak season.
  • Lead with a tight motivation letter: Konstanz’s committee grades on grade, subject fit, motivation, and extracurriculars equally, so a strong motivation letter can offset a 65 percent Bachelor’s.
  • Order your Indian transcripts in English early: request from your university registrar at least eight weeks before the ZEuS deadline.
  • Open a blocked account before you file for the visa: Kotak Bank, Expatrio, and Fintiba each take two to four weeks to confirm the deposit.
  • Submit the ZEuS application two weeks early: last-minute uploads sometimes stall on scan quality or missing attestations.
  • Attach your IELTS or TOEFL TRF directly: Konstanz accepts the applicant’s PDF upload during review, with the official score sent after admission.
  • Save screenshots of every ZEuS confirmation: the portal does not always email application receipts.
  • Keep tuition and semester-fee funds in INR equivalent: €1,500 tuition plus €175 contribution comes to around ₹1.84 Lakhs per semester, due before enrolment.

University of Konstanz admissions reward Indian students who respect the ZEuS cycle, lock in the APS and uni-assist steps early, and lead the application with a programme-specific motivation letter. Pair the primary winter cycle with the Summer Semester 2027 as a back-up window, and the lakeside research campus becomes an achievable Germany target rather than a reach.

Overview

Overall experience is very good. As I heard the Universities in Germany have very high quality of education, that is very true. Love the professors here. Doing a research assistant job too which covers my living expenses and the professor is also very good. No excess work pressure. Another thing is the location, which is very beautiful.
