Class 7 Science Chapter 8 Winds, Storms, and Cyclones: Important Topics

A storm with lightning and thunder is called a thunderstorm. It occurs due to the convection of air in hot and humid areas. A natural calamity caused by the difference in air pressure in the atmosphere is called a cyclone. A cyclone is a violently rotating windstorm category such as Uniform and Non-uniform motion. 

  • Air Exerts Pressure

Air is made up of molecules of different gases, where the molecules are colliding with each other constantly with the walls of the container. When a molecule collides with the wall, they exert a small force on the wall. The pressure exerted by the gas is because of the sum of all these collision forces.

  • Air Expands on Heating

The molecules move apart as they are heated and move faster. So air, like most other substances, expands when heated and contracts when cooled. As there is more space between the molecules, the air is less dense than the surrounding matter and the hot air floats upward.

  • Thunderstorms and Cyclones

Cyclones begin as thunderstorms which later develop into cyclones. They are associated with strong winds, heavy rains, as well as tidal waves. Thunderstorms are common in tropical regions like India, but very few thunderstorms become cyclones. In India, the eastern coast is more vulnerable to cyclones than the western coast.

  • Destruction Caused by Cyclones

The destruction caused by cyclones basically depends on their intensity, location, and size. For instance, in forest regions, the trees get uprooted and canopies get affected. In coastal regions, the banks and embankments get eroded. Again, in deserts, the sand dunes get reshaped whereas in mountainous regions mudslides and landslides occur.
