Class 7 Science Chapter 16 Water – A Precious Resource: Important Points

Water is needed for the survival of plants and animals alike. It is used for cleaning, industrial manufacturing, hydroelectric power generation, transportation, etc. Water and Water Resources are very important for us in order to maintain an adequate food supply and keep our environment productive. The demand for freshwater is rapidly increasing which means that water should be sustainably used.

  • Forms of Water: Water mainly exists in many forms, such as a liquid, a solid, as in snow and ice, and a gas, underneath the land surface as groundwater, and in the atmosphere, as in clouds and invisible water vapor.
  • The water vapor attaches to small bits of dust in the air, which forms raindrops in warm temperatures. In cold temperatures, it freezes and forms snow or hail.
  • Groundwater as An Important Source of Water: Groundwater is an important source of water supply, which is also a major source of industrial and agricultural uses. Around 64% of groundwater is used for irrigation to grow crops, and it is an important component in many industrial processes.
  • Depletion of Water Table: Water Table depletion is basically caused when we pump water more rapidly than it can renew itself.
  • With a growing population, the more frequently we pump water from the ground, the more difficult it is for the groundwater to recharge itself and provide us with the amount of water we need.
