IISER Bhopal offers Ph.D. courses in the full-time mode under various specializations. Selection for Ph.D. course will done based on candidates' performance in the interview. The selected candidates are eligible for the JRF Fellowship as per the institute’s norms and funding agency. The Ph.D. is offered in three major streams which are the Natural Sciences Stream, Engineering Sciences Stream and Humanities and Social Sciences Stream. These streams are further divided into different specializations. Candidate must have passed a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in the relevant field. Additionally, candidates will be required to submit their GATE scores, UGC NET, DST-INSPIRE fellowship or any other equivalent document subjecting to the selection criteria.

IISER Bhopal Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria 2024 

Students interested in applying for Ph.D. at IISER Bhopal must satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

  • ​Candidate must have passed a Master’s or equivalent degree in Engineering or Technology/ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ Master’s or equivalent degree in science/ Master's or equivalent degree in Arts/Commerce (or allied subjects) with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10 point scale.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks will be allowed for candidates belonging to OBC-NCL/EWS categories and a 10% relaxation is available for SC/ST/PWD categories.
  • Candidates who are appearing or are about to appear for final examinations of the qualifying degree programme are eligible to apply for PhD programme. However, if selected, admission to the PhD programme would be conditional upon their completing the qualifying degree with the defined marks criteria, before joining the institute.

IISER Bhopal Ph.D. Age Criteria 2024 

Students interested in applying for Ph.D. at IISER Bhopal must satisfy the following age criteria:

  • The candidate’s age should not exceed a maximum of 28 years. 
  • A relaxation of 3 years will be offered to OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates.
  • Moreover, a 5-year relaxation is applicable for SC/ST/PD/Female applicants. 

Note: The upper age limit shall be determined as of the last date of online submission of applications. The date of birth as recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary Examination Certificate/Aadhar Card will only be accepted by the IISER Bhopal for determining the age.

IISER Bhopal Ph.D. Selection Process 2024 

The selection of the applicants for Ph.D. courses at IISER Bhopal is as follows:

Candidates need to fulfill any one of the following criteria:

  • Valid GATE score
  • Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET /CSIR/NBHM etc. including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)
  • Selected through a National level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies /Institutions such as UGC/ IIT/ IISc./ IISER/ IIIT etc.
  • Selected provisionally for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship (provisional award letter to be produced)
  • Those with B.Tech. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI more than 8.0 on a 10-point scale.

The shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview round. The date of the interview will be communicated to shortlisted candidates by e-mail and the same will be available on the Institute's website. A travelling allowance (TA) will be paid to SC/ST candidates as per the Government of India norms. 

  • There are two sets of interviews to be cleared. Shortlisted candidates for the interview are intimidated by email.
  • Shortlisted candidates of Round 1 have an opportunity to interact with the respective faculty members of the department.
  • The final selection is done after Round 2 of the interview.

Students whose results for CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF/INSPIRE-PhD Fellowship/ NET-LS/ Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship or any other equivalent fellowship are awaited may also apply with their roll number(s) mentioned in the application. Such candidates may walk in for the interview provided they have qualified for examination for any of the above fellowships before the interview date.
