Faculty

There are around 200-225 professors and around 4000-4500 students on campus. So the faculty to student ratio is good too. There are enough professor available for the classes and the students to have a good learning experience. Faculties credentials are great in research internationally and they are also there for one to one mentorship. You can meet them whenever you feel like in their office/chamber.

Course Curriculum Overview

The dual degree course in BITS is a way to get a BE degree along with it. In a way, it is a shortcut to reach top tier college and also get two degrees in 5 years in a top tier college of the country. The curriculum is mix of some old and modern things and I think more old approach can be removed and only modern approach should be retained. There are 2 quizzes, a midsem and a endsem.

Course Curriculum Overview

I had a knack for Biology. Tried for Medical entrance, didn't make it. So, took the entrance exams of Zoology and Botany at Presidency College. In Zoology, I was behind in the merit list, didn't make it up to the cut. Ended up with Botany. Student to faculty ratio was 1:2, for 26 students in a batch, the Botany department(now Biological Science) had 13 faculty. Obviously, not all faculty took classes simultaneously in a year. Most of the faculty was old school, chalk-blackboard oriented. It changed dramatically in five years I studied till Masters, as Presidency became University. Teachers retired, new foreign return faculty were recruited. Bachelor exams were difficult. Since bachelor in Presidency was under Univerisity of Calcutta, and marks were hard to get. These two changed after college became deemed university. I was there during the transition of the institute, it might look confusing now.

Campus Life

The best part of Presidency University for me, at least. Campus, fest, social life. Multiple fests like MILIEU, ISPAT. People from different socio-economic backgrounds. Huge library central library. Each department has its own library too. Books are a non-issue here. Classroom infrastructure changed from moderate to good during the period I studied. Lots of funding came and infrastructure improved. Plenty of opportunities for those interested in sports. Institute has huge ground, Presi Greens. Social, political, every kind of group was there.

Course Curriculum Overview

Chose this for the all-round development and emphasis on research skills and corporate readiness, which are the key points of picking up a course in NMIMS SOS. The core faculty is extremely experienced and amazing, with all of them currently guiding Ph.D. students and have amazing research experience under their belt, and we have had phenomenal visiting faculty, especially Prof K.K. Rao from IITB (now superannuated) for teaching Molecular biology and Recombinant DNA technology. Even for IPR Patenting, Prof Munshi from NMIMS SOL was brought in, who has the experience of working for the UN, even. All of the faculties are extremely experienced and brilliant at what they do and provide useful insights for practical use. The exams are conducted in two phases - 50% as Internal component (containing MCQs, assignments, projects, etc.) And the other half is for term-end externally. The 4th semester consists only of a thesis (project done outside) that is marked by external experts.

Campus Life

As part of the SVKM campus, there is a fest going on every 15 days by different colleges on the campus so it's always bustling with people. Literally always! Mithibai canteen is the best place for that, and for the best food, ever! As far as SOS is concerned, we have Excalibur in December as a cultural fest which has recurring themes, and the Student's Council organizes it along with organizing other things like Sports Day and other events to keep life fun. The library is amazingly spacious with as many books you could want, and SOS shares a library with UPG and SOL, so those too. Quite the interdisciplinary feat! Laptops are also available in the library for your use along with all the PCs. There is access to e-Library and numerous paid databases via the Library ID. Every class is equipped with a smartboard, and central air conditioning and carpets are just SVKM things.

Course Curriculum Overview

By studying the curriculum so far all that I can judge is that it has a wide scope for research. The subjects cover advanced science topics. We have two internals and the main exam per year, we go for internships in the final, i.e., the second year of M.Sc.

Admission

They have their own exam for admission based on the rankings of which they send out the call letters for admissions. The process after entrance exam, if shortlisted, includes and interview, I applied for the college online itself, the exam happens by May.

Course Curriculum Overview

The college has a great collaboration with certain institutes for the research that happens here, the subjects are very advanced. We have two internals and a final exam per year, as we are doing our post-graduation, we also do internships in our final year.

Alumni/Alumna

Most of the alumni that have graduated from here are in good positions is well-known organizations, they can be the bridge between you and the company (they could refer you or put in a word for you). The alumni help both academically and career-wise.

Remarks

over all this college looks very small but the facilities provided by them are at International level. A student from for example in mumbai University would not be able to provide international facilities. even a masters first year student here can perform electrophoresis and also visit reputed institutes.

Exam Structure

The exam structure is very feasible. They have two internal exams where faculty member prepare set of questions and display on the power point Presentation and students have to write the answers. Final examination is conducted in a very formal way with proper barcode and labelss for roll no.

Ques. How is the MSc in life sciences in NIT Rourkela?

● Top Answer By Sudeeksha Verma on 17 Aug 23

Ans. The Life Sciences Department at NIT Rourkela has improved immensely and is growing at an impressive pace. Here are a few features of the department of Life Sciences at NIT Rourkela- The Life Sciences curriculum is improved and covers all the topics related to modern developments in this field.  The department has a well equipped laboratory to facilitate research work. Research work at the department and at NIT Rourkela as a whole, is really good. The Life Sciences faculty is very supportive and you can ask for their guidance wherever you need it. Students are encouraged to perform research. People have the misconception that basic sciences are not good at NIT R because it is a technical institute. This is not true at all. If you wish to go for research in Life Sciences, NIT Rourkela is a good option. Thus, an MSc. in Life Sciences from NIT Rourkela is a good choice.Read more

Ques. Should I join IISC or JNCASR for integrated MSC-PHD in biology?

● Top Answer By Seenu Arora on 05 Nov 22

Ans. Both are excellent institutions, but the experience will differ between the two. Whereas IISc is much larger and has a more vibrant student community, the smaller batches in JNCASR allow for more attention and a better chance of getting into at least one of their preferred labs. IISC is smack dab in the middle of a commercial area (well, actually, the commercial areas grew around IISc, but let's not get into that). JNCASR is less centrally located and more of a sleepy campus. It's a completely different story after the second year when the pressure is intense and lab work can be extremely demanding.  There are no holidays for students (not even Sundays or national holidays like the 15th of August or the 26th of January, but there is a flag hoisting event so you get off work for at least an hour) and most P.I.s do not allow paid leave of more than two weeks per year. This is not to say that there isn't any fun on campus. Most of the rules governing on-campus life are lax, and the guards and staff are laid-back and don't make a fuss when asked to overlook a few things.Read more

Ques. Which is better, metallurgy at NIT Warangal or an MSc in Biology at BITS Goa?

● Top Answer By Kalyan Shastri on 16 Aug 23

Ans. Both Metallurgy at NIT Warangal and MSc in Biology at BITS Goa are great programs offering a plethora of opportunities and exposure to its students. But the choice between the two is a very personal matter as both the branches are very diverse in the opportunities they offer. So Go for NIT Warangal if you are interested in Metallurgy Go for BITS Goa if you are ready to Study Biology along with BE Degree. However, you need to bear in mind the fact that BITS Goa is expensive and the fees is very high around 25 lakhs while NIT Warangal's total fees are less than 10 Lakhs.Read more
