NEIGRIHMS (North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences), Shillong, is a centrally funded autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, established in 1987. The MBBS programme at NEIGRIHMS was launched in 2008 with an annual intake of 50 seats, offering a 4.5-year full-time on-campus course followed by a mandatory 1-year compulsory rotatory internship, totalling 5.5 years. The course is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Fees are among the lowest for any government medical college in India, making it highly sought after by students from the North Eastern states. Admission is based on NEET UG scores, with seats distributed across state-specific and open NE categories.

Admission for the 2026-27 session is upcoming. Based on the 2025-26 session pattern, the prospectus and online application are expected to be available on the NEIGRIHMS website (www.neigrihms.gov.in) around late June 2026, with the last date for application submission expected around mid-July 2026. Counselling and batch commencement dates will be notified on the official website. For the 2025-26 session, the MBBS academic session commenced in September 2025.

  • The institute serves as the primary referral hospital for the entire North Eastern region, providing students with exposure to a wide variety of tropical, infectious, and region-specific diseases.
  • Students are required to execute a bond at the time of admission; if a student leaves the course without completion, a bond amount of Rs. 10,00,000 (Rupees Ten Lakhs) is payable.

NEIGRIHMS MBBS FAQs

Ques. Is NEIGRIHMS MBBS degree recognised by NMC and valid across India?

Ans. Yes, the MBBS degree from NEIGRIHMS is fully recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is valid across India. The course is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. There were some rumours circulating in the past about derecognition, but these were based on a misreading of a different notification. The NMC's official list of colleges teaching MBBS confirms NEIGRIHMS as a recognised institution. Graduates can appear for NEET PG, USMLE, PLAB, and other postgraduate entrance exams without any restrictions.

Ques. Can students from outside the North Eastern states apply for MBBS at NEIGRIHMS?

Ans. Out of the total 50 MBBS seats, 8 seats fall under the All India Quota (AIQ) and are filled through MCC counselling based on NEET UG scores, open to candidates from across India. The remaining 42 seats (14 for Meghalaya, 10 for Nagaland, and 18 NE Open Category) are reserved for Permanent Residents or Domicile holders of the 8 North Eastern states including Sikkim. So students from outside the NE region can only apply for the 8 AIQ seats through MCC counselling.

Ques. What is the hostel situation at NEIGRIHMS? Are single rooms available?

Ans. NEIGRIHMS provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls on campus. According to student reviews, single rooms are available from the first year itself, which is a significant advantage over many other government medical colleges. The hostel fee is Rs. 5,000 per year. However, hostel accommodation is subject to availability, and students are advised to apply for hostel at the time of admission. The campus is located approximately 10 km from Shillong city, so staying on campus is strongly recommended.

Ques. What is the bond requirement at NEIGRIHMS and what happens if a student leaves midway?

Ans. All selected candidates are required to execute a bond on a requisite stamp paper at the time of admission. If a student leaves the MBBS course before completion for any reason, they are liable to pay a bond amount of Rs. 10,00,000 (Rupees Ten Lakhs). This is a standard requirement for government medical colleges and is meant to ensure that students complete the course. Students should carefully consider this before accepting admission.

Ques. How is the clinical exposure and patient load at NEIGRIHMS for MBBS students?

Ans. NEIGRIHMS functions as the primary referral hospital for the entire North Eastern region, which means students get exposure to a very diverse range of patients and conditions, including tropical diseases, infectious diseases, and conditions specific to the NE region. The hospital receives patients from all 8 NE states, ensuring a high patient load. The relatively small batch size of 50 students per year also means better access to clinical postings and more hands-on learning compared to larger medical colleges. Several alumni have gone on to secure seats in NEET PG at premier institutions like AIIMS and PGIMER.

Ques. Is NEIGRIHMS a good choice for students planning to pursue PG (MD/MS) after MBBS?

Ans. This is a commonly debated question among students. NEIGRIHMS itself offers MD/MS programmes in several specialties, and many MBBS graduates from NEIGRIHMS have secured PG seats at top central institutes like AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and JIPMER through NEET PG. However, students should be aware that the competitive academic environment may be less intense compared to larger metro colleges, and self-study and discipline become especially important. The institute's location away from major coaching hubs means students need to rely more on self-preparation or online resources for NEET PG preparation.

How is NEIGRIHMS, Shillong for MBBS if I want to pursue my residency in the US?

Tithi AggrawalLives in New Delhi

I would advise you to not opt for NEIGRIHMS if you plan to pursue your residency in the US. It is better to look for other colleges if you are seeking admission through NEET. You can join a USMLE coaching during your MBBS degree itself. At some other college, you’ll be exposed to students who have cleared their USMLE. Almost negligible MBBS students from NEIGRIHMS apply for/ clear USMLE. The college is in a budding state, so the faculty isn’t sufficient. However, the teachers are helpful and supportive.

NEIGRIHMS is not a very good option in your case.

What are the MBBS cutoff marks for ST students in NEIGRIHMS?

Prerona Datta
Aritra BiswasMBBS from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences

No seats are reserved for ST candidates in AIQ and NEIGRIHMS Open for NE State and Sikkim permanent residents.

The AIQ cutoff goes high. As per trend, it stands at around 540-550+. The cutoff for the NEIGRIHMS Open stands at around 460-480+.

I am listing down the seats reserved for ST students with prc of these states-

  1. Arunachal Pradesh- 4 (depends on state merit lists)
  2. Mizoram- 3 (depends on state merit lists)
  3. Nagaland-8 (depends on state merit lists)
  4. Meghalaya-9 (depends on state merit lists)

I have given you a general idea as I don’t have the exact figures.

What is the environment like for doing an MBBS in NEIGRIHMS, in Shillong? How's the study environment? Is it worth it to study there?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

NEIGRIHMS is a central institute. It is the cleanest medical college in India. It has a good infrastructure which includes a cancer hospital and a state-of-the-art sports ground. The college auditorium is really impressive, and it has state-of-the-art lecture halls.

NEIGRIHMS offers all the basic amenities to its MBBS students. You’ll get more lectures and clinical postings than most state colleges. The patient load is high and they come with a variety of ailments. So you’ll get good clinical exposure. The faculty is friendly and dedicated. You can easily approach the teachers and residents for doubt-solving.

The mess food isn’t good. Also, the hostels near RMO aren’t in very good condition. These are two main drawbacks of the institute.

Overall, NEIGRIHMS is a good college for pursuing your MBBS.

I have a few friends who attended NEIGRIHMS. Their time at the institute has been quite good. It is a central Govt. medical college. There is also a hospital near the campus. The institute offers decent academics with good patient flow and cases.

For an MBBS, NEIGRIHMS can be a decent option.
