Arizona State University (ASU) offers a wide range of accommodation options at its Tempe campus. Annual on-campus housing costs range from approximately $8,200 to $23,000 (₹7.5–20+ lakhs), depending on room type and residence hall. All the first-year undergraduate students are expected to live in residential colleges linked to their major, with a mandatory meal plan. Graduate and upper-division students at ASU can choose from apartment-style units, shared rooms, studios, and private-bedroom options.

Housing for first-year students is guaranteed if deadlines (May 15 for Fall; November 15 for Spring) are met. For international and graduate students, spaces are limited and allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must apply through the My ASU Housing Portal after confirming admission and paying the required enrollment and housing confirmation fees.

ASU accommodations include furnished rooms, utilities, community facilities, and access to *Sun Devil Dining meal plans. Off-campus alternatives near the Tempe campus range from roughly $745 to $2,500 (67,485 to 2.26 lakhs INR) per month, depending on location and privacy level.

*What is Sun Devil Dining? Sun Devil Dining is the university's official campus food service provider, offering over 50 locations, including dining halls, cafes, and markets across all four campuses of ASU.

FAQs

Ques: Is on-campus housing mandatory at Arizona State University?

Ans: No, it is not strictly mandatory. ASU expects most first-year students to live on campus, and housing is guaranteed if you apply by the deadline. However, students can choose to live off campus. Graduate, transfer, and international students are not required to live on campus, and spaces for them are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ques: How are roommates assigned at ASU?

Ans: Students can either select their own roommate or be matched by the university. ASU provides a Roommate Finder tool in the My ASU Housing Portal, where both students must request each other for confirmation. If you do not select a roommate, ASU assigns one based on your lifestyle and preference questionnaire.

Ques: When should I apply for ASU housing?

Ans: You should apply as early as possible. For Fall intake, the priority deadline is May 15, and for Spring intake, it is November 15. On-campus housing fills quickly, especially at the Tempe campus. If you are considering off-campus housing, start searching at least 6-8 months before your move-in date to secure better options and rental prices.

  • Mixed bag of all, beware of FB scammer when looking out for places, rent if shared, 650-900 with utilities. You can get it under 500, but it might not be ideal for some.

  • I found accommodation through: • Student housing groups • Online platforms and university forums • Monthly rent: $400 – $600 USD (shared apartment) • Facilities typically include utilities, Wi-Fi, gym access, and furnished units.
  • Housing near campus is convenient but competitive, so early planning is important.

  • I opted for off-campus accommodation. I googled the nearest apartments to the university and found a few friends on Whatsapp university groups to share the accommodation. Total monthly rent for the whole apartment, i.e., 2 bed 2 bath, is around $2000. It includes rent, water bill, Garbage etc. Electricity bill will be around $120.
  • Make sure you share a room with your course batchmates; it will be easier to do assignments & prepare for the exams. there are few communities that are mostly filled with Indians, like Volta on Broadway, Agave apartments, DPV etc. My accommodation is 2 miles away from the University.

  • I relied heavily on the free accommodation and room availability posts that were shared in the student housing WhatsApp and Facebook groups. The apartment I now have space to live in costs me $700 per month, which includes net, water, and trash, but I have separate charges for electricity. In Amman, for my rent, the apartments I wanted to rent quickly were booked and the demand escalated during the peak admission seasons at ASU so I had to start looking for apartments very early to secure a really good place.
  • The apartment I am staying in is about 10 to 15 minutes away from campus, which is a spot-on distance. Being an Indian myself, I know that staying close to the Tempe campus, which includes the areas of University Drive, Apache Boulevard and the apartments in and around Temple, are the most sought-after places. These places are the cheapest to stay in and are the easiest places in Tempe to find a place to stay nearer to groceries and to reach the closest Indian grocery store. For the next batch of students who are curious about off-campus housing, I would like to inform you to kindly join the WhatsApp groups at the earliest.
  • Furthermore, it would also be my advice that you are flexible with who your potential future roommates could be, and importantly, you finalise the housing before coming to Tempe. I have noticed that students procrastinate a lot regarding their housing, only booking after coming to Tempe, which leads to excessive stress.

  • I live off-campus, very close to the university. A friend recommended a WhatsApp group where people post accommodation listings. I found my place through that group. The monthly rent is $350, and the facilities include access to a pool and nearby laundry rooms—that’s pretty much it.
  • One of the challenges I faced was not being able to view the place in person, as I had to secure accommodation before arriving in the U.S. Fortunately, my apartment is very close to campus, and there are free shuttle buses for students, which makes commuting easy.
